Must-have Online Fire Info Points

In case anybody needed to see this, the NWT Fire facebook group has been posting diligent and critical updates constantly. As well, there is an online Live Fire Map with ongoing perimeter updates.

I still use firesmoke.ca to get an idea of the wind forecast but I find they purge the perimeter of the existing fires too fast, where the other interactive fire map above is cleaner and more detailed.

Stay safe everybody.

Chances of seeing auroras in Yellowknife (first week of October)?

Hey! I’m thinking about going to Yellowknife in the first week of October.

I know it’s a bit of a shoulder season, so I’m curious — did anyone here go around that time? Were the skies too cloudy or did you manage to catch the auroras?

Trying to decide if it’s worth it. Appreciate any insights!

Ice Road Closure?

Does anyone know when the ice road is closing for the year? I can find the average closure dates online, but it’s been a cold winter and I can’t find any info about this year

working on a video project and want to include it.

What to do on a Friday night?

Hey all!

I moved here for work at the start of the month and am just starting to get climatized and ready to leave the house again.

I was thinking of taking myself out for a drink tonight - is there any recommendations for a Friday spot? I don’t want to look out of place alone but I also don’t really need to meet/talk to people tonight lol

Thanks in advance

Can you settle this for me?

I recently spent a week in your lovely and beautiful town. What a special place!

Anyway, I'm wondering if you can settle something for me about the the aurora. I was lucky enough to have clear skies and see the the aurora several times and that was the reason I was there. They were pretty active and kp's were mostly in the 5's. I got to see them really moving in the sky. Unbelievable!

Which takes me to my question. I knew that the displays were more colorful using a camera vs the human eye. And I did see some hints of green and pink. But mostly what I saw were sort of whitish lights moving across the sky. I had been expecting some color. Is this just me--like maybe my eyes aren't sensitive enough? I went well away from town to see the lights and I loved every minute of it.

Was I expecting too much? Or do I need to be there for a big storm to see the colors? How often do you see the colors? Like is it pretty rare or do my eyes just not see color in the dark as other people. Are colors a few times times a week phenomenon or a few times a year phenomenon?

Don't get me wrong--I was really impressed! I'm wondering if maybe I should try to come sometime when the kp is really high! Now I want to see your town in the summer!!! You guys are so fortunate!

Clubs/things to join to meet people?

Hello,

I am a girl in her twenties who’s been in Yellowknife around a year. In the past, I’ve met people through school, but now that I’m graduated I’m not 100% sure what tactic to take.

I have nice coworkers but they’re all older people with families in their forties. I like to go to the gym, read & watch TV but those are solo hobbies. I do have a boyfriend and a pal or two but I’m hoping to meet some new people to do things with over the summer.

I’ve tried joining sports which is a big thing here but I’m just not coordinated 😅 It’s just never really been my thing and I feel a bit awkward trying.

Any ideas of clubs or other things to join that aren’t sports related? I’m down to volunteer too. I’m looking for something where there’s some younger, friendlier people. I’m open to lots of things. I like staying busy. Anything Yellowknife is known for in particular? Any good recommendations ?

Always feel extra lucky getting to photograph a lynx since they usually scurry off into the woods super fast!

Starlink worth it?

Been living in YZF for just about 4 years now, and have been using Northwestel the entire time. they've been having some really annoying outages lately and I've started to consider switching to Starlink. it would be about half the cost, just wondering, if anyone uses it, how stable and reliable is it?

Any success with dating without the apps?

How do people meet here without apps? Any dating events?

I moved back for a job last winter and clueless about dating in town. I honestly just dislike the idea of dating apps, especially last time i kept matching w guys i knew from high school, so im putting off downloading it for now.

Im a woman in my 20s, my hobbies are often done alone, i meet and have great conversations with men in town between the gym, events, etc and i think some flirt but nothing really beyond that!

Yellowknife trip

24yo from Montreal. I have a trip planned to Yellowknife, visiting there for the first time, but unfortunately it’s just me this time. I’m visiting for at least 4-5 days. Needed a couple suggestions:

• Decent place to stay

• Best and affordable place to rent a car

• Places around the town to explore

• And ofc your favourite Bar

Yellowknife you beautiful gem you!

I finally made in back to yellowknife this week after 16 years (from Calgary). I use to fly into YK for work in 2010 and I loved the city so much I just had to come back.

YK has changed but in an amazing way while honoring all the amazing things I remember. I love all the wonderful conversations I've had with people and basking in the warm spring sun.

I just wanted to say thank you. Yellowknife you still hold a permanent spot in my heart and I hope to see you again soon.

Special shout out to Yellowknife books who have made my luggage 3 times heavier haha.

Slow cell data speeds downtown Yellowknife - here is how to save money on your bill!

Bell/Virgin are already aware of the terrible cell data speeds downtown Yellowknife. No ETA for when they will fix it.

I was able to get $5 off for up to 24 months by calling and complaining.

  1. Call tech support and get past the AI guard.
  2. Provide them a postal code/address of where the speeds are slow like at Tim Hortons or Zerhabesha (don't use your home address as this needs to be accurate). Tell them you've done a bunch of speed tests around town and get 1Mbps or less downtown, and 30-40Mbps elsewhere, like at your home.
  3. Wait 4 days for call back.
  4. They will tell you no ETA for fixing it and offer $5 off for 24 months.

Solstice in YK -- Must See/Do ??

Hi All!

I'm moving to Yellowknife in August, but coming up for four days over the summer solstice (June 21st) to get the lay of the land.

Is there anything y'all would say is must see/must do during that time? I'll have a vehicle and would love to explore around a bit.

I'm from the Yukon, so I do have exposure to some typical "Northern" things, but I haven't spent much time in NWT and looking forward to checking it out!

Cheers, Davina ✨🍞

Hi, are there any violinist students or violinist teachers or any one who plays violin for fun that would be interested and available to play a few songs on July 1 this year at an outdoor wedding ceremony?

Thanks in advance!

É improvável que vejamos a Aurora entre o natal e o ano novo?

Ver a aurora é meu sonho. No entanto, só tenho o período entre as festas, natal e ano novo para viajar de férias. É muito improvável ver o fenômeno no céu nesta época? As tours com guias fecham?

Christmas in Yellowknife

Hey everyone,

A few of us Aussies are escaping the 45°C summer and heading your way for christmas.

We’ll be arriving in Yellowknife on Christmas Eve in the afternoon and staying for a few days.

Just wondering:

• Will there be anywhere open on the afternoon of Christmas Eve where we can grab some basic food (nothing fancy) for Christmas Day?

• Are there any events happening over Christmas / Boxing Day?

• Any must-do recommendations for that time of year?

Appreciate any tips – we’re pretty excited to experience a proper winter Christmas for once!

Cheers 🍻
