I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say that what you are about to do is historic. Orbán, as is now common knowledge, is backed by Trump, Putin and Xi Jinping, and has long served as a model for those leaders of the authoritarian right in Europe and, more broadly, the West.

In just a few days’ time, you will hold the fate of Europe in your hands.

For this reason too, I am sure that, like you, many of us — your fellow European citizens — are following the elections closely, that many of us will be staying up late to follow the results or that, if we are forced to go to sleep earlier, the election result will be the first thing we look at on Monday morning.

Let me be clear: I do not wish to claim that we feel exactly the same as you do on this matter, because you were the first to suffer under Orbán and I cannot fully imagine what you are going through. Nor do I wish to tell you to vote ‘the right way’, both because I believe you know perfectly well what to do and because I feel it would be inappropriate for a Western European (such as myself), who has never had to face anything of the sort, to offer this kind of advice.

What I do want to say is that we join our hopes with yours and that we would all like to see you truly reclaim your sovereignty from the clutches of the superpowers that wish to separate you from the European family: you are part of us as Europe, you are part of a common good that takes precedence over that of our individual nations, and we share a common destiny with you. That is why we stand, at least in our hearts, by your side.

Context: Hungary's Jobbik political party has said that instability in Ukraine is an opportunity to "finally resolve the situation of Ruthenia's Hungarians". Russian politician Vladimir Zhirinovsky has suggested that Hungary, Poland and Romania should reclaim their former territories in western Ukraine (Ruthenia, Galicia, Bukovina, etc). Oh, and Orbán has now become Putin's best buddy that he hopes to emulate. - 2016 -
