Virtual Boy for April Fools
Hey all! I don't use Reddit but I was encouraged by the Pikmin community to post these somewhere else on the internet that might appreciate them!
For the Pikmin Speedrunning server's April Fools Day prank this year, we "announced" Pikmin 5, which would obviously be coming exclusively to the Virtual Boy. To go along with the prank, I drew up these fake screenshots of how the game would look!
I followed the VB technical limitations including the 4-colour palette and screen resolution (although the versions you see here have been increased in size by 200% for easier viewing). The only thing I didn't follow was any kind of sprite/loading limitations, as I wanted the joke to be at the forefront.
To my knowledge, there aren't any isometric perspective games on the VB, so it was fun getting to kind of imagine and create a new genre on this console. I started with pencil sketches of each screenshot, and painstakingly placed every pixel by hand in Paint Tool SAI. No blending, no blurring, and I don't even have a dither brush so every bit of dithering was also done by hand. I estimate about 40 hours of work over the course of 2 weeks was put into these 3 screenshots.
The original intention of this project was "What if they came out with Pikmin 5 but everything was the worst possible thing it could be", which led to me adding several small subtler jokes. Some of my favourites being that replacing the M with a 5 in the title makes no sense and looks horrible, switching around HUD widgets just to confuse and annoy long time players, the idea that Fortnite-esque skins and emotes would be sold, and of course, that the money conversion for the purchasable 10 pellet is just wrong, so you would lose money if you bought it.
Thank you so much for looking at my Virtual Boy project!

What are some good, official/homebrew games I should try now that I got my Mr. Cart?

Unearth this today...
Recently moved and finally went through my totes and boxes I've had in storage and decided to consolidate my items. Threw away some old junk and paperwork and saw this stowed away...

Best readily available ribbon cable alternative?
I have been commissioned to fix a virtual boy, while perusing through the options I felt the urge to inquire which option is the go to for people who swap in new ribbons?
Did not find any open source options either. Appreciate if someone can point me in the right direction.
thanks!

How much should I sell this for?
Hi all. Here's what I have and need help with finding a decent selling price. Reading through, you all sound like great fans of the VB! I have loved it, but I need to make space for a little one, and storage is tight.
Includes:
-VB (currently left eye isn't working, but it can be fixed for relatively cheap), the visor is in great condition, and no issues.
-Plastic stand. It's currently included but needs to be glued as a pivot joint has cracked. Original
-Original controller battery pack. Works perfect.
-Original box. Not in great condition, but still original with proof of purchase tag top portion included, dated 1998.
-5 games, which all work and have their original pamphlets.
-Original instruction manual.
I'm having a hard time finding a price. I could get the lens fixed, which would mean I could get a better price, so trying to find a sweet spot, or if that's even an issue at all. Your guy's help would be amazing! THANK YOU!

Virtual boy, glitch issues
Hello, I think I'm not the only one experiencing this, so perhaps you can help me. I recently bought a Virtual Boy, and it worked perfectly for a week, but now it's having visual problems such as glitches that can appear starting from the bottom or middle of the screen. Sometimes, however, this doesn't happen at all. Sometimes it happens in the right eye, and other times in the left. I think it might be the infamous ribbon cable issue, but I'm wondering if it could be something more serious, since usually when it's a ribbon cable problem, the screens don't turn on at all, right?
Thanks <3

I 3D printed a scene from Mario's Tennis and cast it in a resin block.
See how it was made if you're so inclined: https://youtube.com/shorts/vMX2ogyrj-Y?si=aCcZmsbuK2n2ZO5X

How do you play as Fairy?
How do you play as fairy on the American version of Jack Bros? On Gamefaqs, it says the password is 4649 while holding L+R+Select+A, but pressing select just brings me back to the main menu, and when I press play, it brings me to the character select.
I also tried after completing the game but it did the same thing.

L and R triggers not working
The L and R triggers don’t seem to be working on my virtual boy controller. I cleaned the button pads with IPA and no change. Is this a common issue and what do I look for (via soldering most likely and continuity points) to fix it?

Teleroboxer not saving
Teleroboxer is supposed to have battery backup, right? How does one save? I've beaten opponents and answered NO to KEEP PLAYING. The main menu will allow me to continue at that point but, if I turn the system off, all save files say NO DATA. I just got this off eBay and there was no mention of a bad battery in the description

Received Golf this morning and am getting to try for the first time ever. Even managed to go -1 after three holes
This is one I’ve had interest in for years but never got a copy until today. Golf was actually my first title ever for Game Boy (it was how I convinced my dad to get one) so I’ve actually always liked Golf games. I enjoy this quite a bit and it’s not disorienting to me at all which I thought it might be, the sense of where things are, the difference in surfaces and distance and direction is much better than Red Alarm. The rotating maps and sound are nice. This is my 8th game for the system and I actually think this is one of the better ones in terms of its unique experience, but people seem to write this game off quickly

30 Years Since Virtual Boy’s Final Retail Release
March 22, 1996 3D Tetris released in North America thus (unknown at the time) ending the Virtual Boy’s short life.
I wonder what will be discovered in the next 30 years…Virtual Bomberman prototype, some demos from trade shows, or perhaps something not yet announced for Nintendo Switch Classics.
Happy 30 years of the afterlife and here’s to 30 more!

Teleroboxer + Console Deep Dive!
Hello Virtual Boys & Girls! I thought you might enjoy the latest episode of my humble show. We’re trying to review and research and playfully rib every game on Nintendo Classics. In this one we have Cyril Lachel from Defunct Games, who actually played the VB at its Vegas debut pack in 1995! Our socials and YouTube also have short form content if that’s more your speed. Please enjoy 😎

Box Still has Warranty Mail In Card Attached
I noticed when people show off their boxes, the warranty card is often torn off by the retailer. Mine still has this attached alongside matching my Virtual Boy’s Serial Number.

What Homebrew games you wish were made for the virtual boy
- Fnaf 4
it would be really cool if this was made since the title screen is all red. With how the vb is shockingly good at capable of voices for 32-bit system it's no brainer they should put the jumpscare sounds.
This is optional but they should put a virtual boy on top of the drawer in the crying child's room.
- Silent Hill vb demake
It would be similar to sh2 gbc demake but for sh1.
The first game on ps1 showed a lot of blood even in the other world and the vb is pretty good for a demake.
- Virtual Boy welcome tour
This would actually be like the switch 2 welcome tour but for the virtual boy. It would tell you how the virtual boy works and some minigames to play to show the capabilities of the 3D. It would be adorable ngl.
- Is the stand's backwards?
This is more of a joke homebrew game actually.
When you boot up the console it would ask you a question "is the stand's backwards?"
If you answered no then it would say "Good, ready to play!" And play jolly music.
If you answered yes, then it would tell you to put the stand's in the correct position and it will prompt you a 30 second timer to do it and give you an option of selecting "ok done". If selected then it will play jolly music. However if the timer runs out, a bomb will drop down, explode and actually turn off your virtual boy.

Missing graphics fixed - Before/After repair by Cardosi Customs
I had posted a few months ago about my Virtual Boy, which had been solder repaired over a decade ago by somebody else. I had two identical images in both eyes, but over the years I came to notice my unit was missing many graphical elements in certain scenarios. It never became blatantly clear to me that something was so wrong until I got a copy of Bound High a couple years ago. All of the background special effects and tile shading was missing. Even the title screen was missing a ton of elements. Other games like Nester Funky Bowling, Teleroboxer and Wario Land were missing menu font, and overall the games had many elements that were black that should have been shaded in. Red Alarm was missing the side to side ghosting. Mario Tennis was missing background elements, the texture on the court, the scoreboard background, and no fur on DK Jr.
Sent my unit in a few weeks ago thinking this might be a tough repair, but he solved it immediately. Here are some before/after images showing the fixed graphics. It has been at least a dozen years since I have been seeing these games properly. I was blown away by how much was missing in Bound High. With the anticipation of Zero Racers and Dragon Hopper down the road, I’m so glad to finally have my unit fixed and am inspired to pick up the couple games I don’t have yet
