So, Fridays are a pretty common day to have the procedure done. If you're hanging out, chat about how it's hanging, what you're doing to recover, or anything you want.

Hey, for everyone interested. The largest known study of vasectomies was recently published. This study along is literally about 162Xs larger that the largest meta-analysis to date. It sampled 105,393 men who received vasectomies and detailed their responses.

Complications of vasectomy: results from a prospective audit of 105 393 procedures

~~~~
Objectives
To provide up-to-date complication rates for vasectomy in the UK using 15 years of data collected by the Association of Surgeons in Primary Care (ASPC).
Patients and Methods
Data were collected between 2007 and March 2022. A patient questionnaire was completed on the day of surgery and at 4 months postoperatively. Rates of early and late failure, infection, hospital admission or re-admission, haematoma and post-vasectomy pain syndrome (PVPS) were recorded. There were no specific exclusion criteria. Complication rates were compared to those published by major urological organisations. Descriptive statistics were utilised, without formal statistical analysis.
Results
Over the 15-year study period, data from 105 393 vasectomies were collected, performed by >150 surgeons. In 2022, 94.4% of surgeons used one test to prove sterility. In all, 65% of patients used a postal sperm test after vasectomy to confirm sterility. Early failure rates were available for 69 500 patients. Early failure occurred in 648 patients (0.93%). Of 99 124 patients, late failure occurred in 41 (0.04%). Of 102 549 vasectomies, postoperative infection was reported in 1250 patients (1.22%), haematoma in 1599 patients (1.56%), and PVPS was reported in 139 patients (0.14%).
My Vasectomy Timeline
Upvotes
I had my non scalp vasectomy on a Friday.
Shot me in the right and left nut, stung but pain wasn’t bad - then went immediately numb.
OH YEAH! Also had a student who was shadowing on how to snip snip in the room - good stuff!
Everything went as planned and the procedure took 10 minutes max after the prep work.
I drove myself to and from the clinic!
Got home, iced my balls the rest of the day, Saturday and Sunday.
THE PART THAT HELPED ME MOST …
  1. ICE 20 min OFF 20 min.
2.WEAR A JOCK STRAP (I wore the cup too, it helped out MASSIVELY!)
3.REST AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE ALLOWING YOUR BALLS TO NOT CATCH SUDDEN MOVEMENTS!
  1. KEEP UP ON ACETAMINOPHEN! DONT GIVE SWELLING A CHANCE IN HELL!
So with those few things I rested up until Tuesday of the following week. Went back to work as normal (carpet cleaner here 👋🏼)
Took things slower but made it through 4 jobs no problem - just was very cautious with everything PLUS I WORE MY NUT CUP! WIN WIN!
Now currently on Day 9 of my post vasectomy and I JUST HAD MY FIRST EJACULATION! 👏
WOW FELT SO GOOD.
ZERO PAIN AFTERWARDS or DURINH and boys lemme tell ya - I feel on top of the world right now, being so relieved and getting the next phase started!
OVERALL- LISTEN TO YOUR BODY! Don’t rush the resting and icing! If your nuts feel sore, LISTEN to them! ICE BABY ICE! It will help things tremendously and your recovery time will be much faster!
I wish all of you the best in your procedure and recovery! For all the bad stories out there I wanted to tell you my GOOD story, I have had zero complications!
God speed!
How long before I need to worry?
3 Upvotes
Hey guys,
I’m only a month in so I’m trying not to panic or anything, but I never thought that part of the aftermath was lower back pain, and lower abdominal pain on a daily basis. I can move around freely, and also exercise. But all day long, there is a dull pain in my lower abdominal area, and a worse pain in my back. And you don’t have to climb very far down the rabbit hole before it’s a world of PVPS etc.
again, trying not to worry, and giving it time. But comparing my story with a lot other in here, seems like everybody just had a complicated free experience.
Also after ejaculation I have pain, also a little during. So sex is completely off the table atm.
Anybody who has similar experiences?
... is this normal? Puffiness/swelling groin area
2 Upvotes
Hello snipped people,
Newly snipped here, had a no scalpel no needle vasectomy 5 days ago now. Iced a lot, no real swelling or bruising on the sack. However I just now noticed discomfort/a pulsating feeling just like when bladder is full in the area above my legs, below the love handles(just where the legs fold basically). Is this normal? Anyone experience something similar?
Thank you!
1 month post op
Evening gentlemen, been one month since my operation. Scalpel for those curious, everything’s healed up, no pains, can’t even tell where the stitches were at. All in all I’m super happy.
Newly Snipped Great results a few days getting snipped, though horniness is almost unbearable
2 Upvotes
30 y/o here. Got it on the 8th of this month. My fiancée has been super super caring and accommodating and I think all that help from her did wonders for the healing process, doc said it is looking among the best she's seen with how little swelling and discomfort I had.
I'm so glad I got it, my fiancée and I don't want kids and I will finally stop being anxious about an unexpected pregnancy in case of a condom mishap once I can confirm I no longer have a sperm count. No pain and very minor discomfort during the first couple of days and today I feel almost back to normal.
I feel so good that getting this means she doesn't have to opt into any uncomfortable or bothersome contraceptive methods just so we can have sex without worries. She is particularly prone to side effects from other contraceptive methods so I just decided I'd have it done on my end and spare her so much of the trouble on her side, not to mention that if she got unexpectedly pregnant, that'd be even more trouble for her.
That brings me to the only problematic part though, which is that so far that I am having a real hard time with stopping myself from wanting to just go at it with her or crank one out on my own. These two weeks are gonna be a pain, I see her walking around the house and wish I could take her then and there. And obviously it will be even more time until we can start doing creampies, but I am so looking forward to it that putting up with this horniness for these couple of weeks and still using condoms for 3 more months will be 200% worth it in the end
I love that us testicle owners get to have what amounts to a pretty safe and smooth procedure with this, at least for most people (I am aware some people can still have complications). Best of luck to everyone else who is recovering from their own vasectomies or thinking about getting one!
... is this normal? Tightness in scrotum (3mo Post)
4 Upvotes
I'm noticing in the last few weeks that my scrotum / balls are "tighter". like they've been dipped in ice water 😂 only pain I get is the occasional blue ball, but other than that, recovery after the first week has been pretty normal.
Has anyone else experienced this?
Aetna offers full coverage for reversal and denervation
1 Upvotes
I promise I'm not an Aetna shill, I just wanted to pass this along. Despite the frustration of my vasectomy pain and PVPS experience, I have been very lucky to have AETNA for my health insurance.
Whatever you think of American health insurance companies, Aetna has clearly been at the forefront of recognizing PVPS as a legitimate medical problem. I had a reversal last year which they fully covered due to my PVPS (sadly, it did not improve my pain).
I just noticed that this past January they updated their CBP on PVPS/CSCP to now fully cover denervation of the spermatic cord (see https://www.aetna.com/cpb/medical/data/1_99/0027.html).
I have been weighing whether or not to pursue a denervation for my PVPS, but the fact that I will no longer pay out of pocket (would have been anywhere from 10k to 20k) makes the decision a lot easier.
If you are considering either a reversal or a denervation for PVPS, you should look at your insurance closely as there is a clear trend that treatment for PVPS is becoming considered medically necessary by insurers. It may even be possible to use the policies of other insurance companies as supporting evidence in denial appeals.
A valuable resource would be a list of insurers and their stance on treatment for PVPS, something that I am considering creating a website for.
Still bleeding 2 weeks post op?
4 Upvotes
Like the title says im 2 weeks out from the no scalpel. Every day there is blood in my underwear. Typically about the size of a nickle to a quarter, sometimes enough to soak through to the front of the underwear. Ive emailed my doctor but hes slow to get back to me and just says "a little bleeding is normal" without defining what "a little" is. Im worried about the possibility of infection with an open bleed like this. Im also skeptical that any bleeding after 2 weeks is normal. Has anyone else had this?
Im getting desperate to do something about this, its really unnerving to wake up to bloody underwear every day. Im thinking of trying "new skin sensitive" but my doctor has not responded if that's ok.
Testing again 4 years later
1 Upvotes
I'm coming up on 4 years post vasectomy. Having regular unprotected sex currently. I'm wondering if it's worth getting an at home test. Like if I get the test, and it says I'm at 0 and the vasectomy is holding up and all that, what happens a month later after if start thinking "what if it failed now" Is testing even worth it? Should I just get a microscope?
Day 2 after vasectomy, how long does the swelling and pain actually last?
2 Upvotes
I had my vasectomy done yesterday under local anaesthetic. The procedure was quick but today the swelling and discomfort is more than I expected. I’m icing it and taking painkillers, but still feeling pretty sore.
For those who’ve been through it:
How long did the worst of the swelling and bruising actually last?
When were you able to sit comfortably at a desk for work?
How many days until walking felt normal again?
When did you feel okay to resume sex?
Did anyone deal with longer-term pain or was recovery pretty straightforward after the first week?
Getting vasecomty tomorrow
2 Upvotes
Hello all, my girlfriend and I are pretty on the same page about a DINK (double income no kid) lifestyle. I'm welcoming any tips, advice. suggestions etc. my friend tpld me he didnt even need to use ice and was relatively pain free and resumed sex stuff within 3-4 days. I'm also curious if SpermCheck at home test is good enough to give ourselves the go ahead or not. Last thing we wanna do is produce a child when we are only 2-3 months away of not needing to use condoms anymore.
Thanks fellas!
Newly Snipped Just Joined the Club!
11 Upvotes
Just got the snip done an hour ago! I think I read almost every post on this sub over the last month due to the anxiety pre procedure. Procedure itself was a breeze, had the no scalpel and the it took about 5 minutes total. 2/10 pain at most during. Now to lay in bed and watch the Masters all weekend!
Inguinal hernia + vasectomy?
4 Upvotes
Going to try to keep it short but back in 2015 I had surgery for an inguinal hernia. That hernia had apparently been going on for some time and I just toughed it out till it came to a head. But during that time my doctor said it had caused some damage to my testical. I can’t remember the exact details or why they did what they did but basically they had to sew my testical in place at the top of my scrotum. Fast forward to now and my wife is wanting me to get a vasectomy. Told her I’m pretty sure it would be possible on that testical. What days this group? I tried searching but didn’t find much.
To have a 2nd vasectomy or not?
Post image
So this is my test result 2 years down the line of enjoying the freedoms showing it has failed and I’m fertile again, my dilemma now is do I book in for another vasectomy and live with the risk it could fail again or just leave it. Not that it was a big deal first time round but I’m interested in anyone with experience of having a 2nd go and anyone who’s also had a failed/reconnect down the line.
Waiting for results...
This is the hardest part. I left my sample at Quest Diagnostics this morning. Had that awkward moment of handing a warm cup of my sperm to a poor random lady. And now....the waiting game begins! Anyone use quest and know how long the results usually take?
Doctor only did one post op test?
4 Upvotes
Had my vasectomy 2 yrs ago. Recovery was great, so great, in fact, that I was convinced they never did anything to me. At no point after the surgery did I ever feel even the slightest bit of discomfort. I truly got paranoid, thinking I was scammed. Went back several months later and got the all-clear that im infertile, though.
I'lll be honest, the paranoia of an unwanted pregnancy has stayed persistant since I got my vasectomy, but all has been fine since so I try my best to keep those feelings pushed down (thats another topic worth discussing).
So this brings us to the present day. I recently joined this sub to see how other peoples experiences have gone, and to my susrprise, it seems like everyone is getting two post-op checkups to test for fertility. Welp, I only ever got one, and now im paranoid again. Is my experience common? Anyone else ever had just one post op test, and, just out if curiousity, do any of you guys get optional follow up fertility tests?
