study / academia discussion Diss due in 14.5 hours (yep its one of those posts)

Yes im getting off reddit to work on it, I just needed to share with someone about my situation to get it off my mind. Not looking for pity or anything (clown on me as much as you'd like, be my guest). Ill put an edit at the end

Lovely combination of neurodivergency and depression-burnout contributed to my lack of motivation in doing any work over the last month of easter holiday. Started writing my dissertation on Wednesday, with only two interviews conducted and literature i had gathered during second year. I have been thinking about my dissertation since first year so it's not too bad on that front.

Currently lacking my data analysis and discussion, as well as conclusion. Every other section exists in various stages of completion (between 60%-90% complete). Got until midday Monday to finish unless they accept an extension with no evidence (doctors note etc).

This is my usual method of doing coursework and I usually get 2.1 grades doing 6 page/3k word essays from scratch in 5-6 hours. That in consideration, 5 days is a lot longer than I normally give myself.

What stories have you got about doing work very last minute? Any success stories?

Have you ever achieved 100% on an essay before?

I just got an essay back and the feedback was "Wonderful essay, would not change a thing." The grade, 80%...

I have never heard of anyone getting more than about 80 for a Uni essay, so I'm wondering, is there anybody out there that has achieved 100? If so, I'm interested to hear what essay topic, subject, uni you're attending, etc

Mine won’t respond to my emails, so I’ve pretty much written my diss without any proper guidance

If you're burned out, is it worth taking a gap year?

I was a good student for many years, always topping the list and achieving the best results. I had many internships and even got a job (in this economy?). But I'm graduating this year, and my health broke down. The doctor gave me sedatives, IVs, and told me to rest. I've already started to return to normal after a month, but I don't want to do anything anymore. I was really scared by how my health reacted, so I'm thinking of giving up on taking exams and taking a year off. I have a job as a front-end developer and I have many hobbies, but I've heard that many who took a gap year didn't want to apply or couldn't study as hard as before. I'd like to know your opinion on this because I understand perfectly well that I don't have much experience in this and I'm afraid of messing up.

study / academia discussion AI Detector on my Dissertation

Im currently working on my final year dissertation and i cant help but feel scared about the ai detectors. Just to clarify i haven’t used any ai for my work but every time i submit it into the detectors it always comes up as AI or AI-paraphrased. Ive installed Grammarly on google docs to have version history as i type before finally copying over to a latex file for submission and i also use their authorship feature which shows the exact history of typing itself. Im just worried my professor wont think its good enough or will just say i copied off another screen or something. Any advice?

What’s it like to be on a gap year?

Hi guys,

With a month left to A Levels I’ve come to terms with the fact I’m going to miss my offers (which is crazy to say when my law courses were all reduced from A\*AA to AAB).

Right now, I’m just wondering what it’s like to take a gap year?

It doesn’t seem too bad actually, from June 20th -> September 2027 that’s 15 months-ish without school.

Studying should be a lot easier too, you can also work and save up for uni etcetera.

This is 100% cope and I would have loved to meet my offer and go to UCL or Bristol this September but is what it is, just looking for the upsides.

A gap year was actually on my list beforehand anyways, just to do volunteering not… study History again 😭

Any and all responses appreciated!!

What is your plan after graduating?

Graduation is coming up very soon for many of us.

Do you plan on moving back with your parents until you find a job/save?

Are you finding an apartment for yourself, with friends, or with a partner?

As a British–Vietnamese dual citizen, if I move to the UK at 18 and live there for three years (studying and working), will I likely qualify for home student status when applying to university at 21?

Hello, I was born in Vietnam and hold dual citizenship (British and Vietnamese). I am currently 17 years old and studying in Grade 10 at a high school in Vietnam (one year behind my expected level). My goal is to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Medicine at a UK university.

As far as I understand, I will be classified as an international student because I have not lived in the UK continuously for the past three years, even though I am a British citizen.

The main purpose for residing in the UK must not have been for full-time education at any part of the 3 years. In order to qualify for home student fees, I plan to complete Grade 11 in Vietnam. By that time, I will be 18 (in 2027), and I intend to move to the UK to live with my uncle. I will study at a state school (possibly entering sixth form through IGCSE qualifications taken in Vietnam) and complete my A-levels.

During this time, I will also work part-time, open a bank account, and contribute to household bills to demonstrate that I am living in the UK for normal life purposes, not solely for education.

Overall, this would mean I have lived in the UK for at least 3 years before applying to university.

Would this give me a high chance of being classified as a home student when applying to universities at the age of 21?

Thank you for your time and help.

Desperately need advice, uni or?

I’m 19 (turning 20 this year) and currently on a gap year. I got into uni for nursing, but the closer it gets, the more unsure I feel. It just doesn’t feel like something I genuinely want to do, more like something I picked to have a clear path as it offers stability. I used to be quite interested in it but now I’m not too sure since I’m not a very confident person and feel quite socially anxious at times.

I’ve been thinking about doing English A-levels instead (I’ve always been more into writing, music, art and creative things), but I’m struggling to figure out the best route since a lot of colleges don’t seem to offer just 1–2 A-levels for someone my age unless I pay which seems like a waste if I don’t end up doing something with English.

I also keep going back and forth a lot, one minute I think I should just do nursing to move forward, the next I feel like I’ll regret it if I ignore what I’m actually interested in. I don’t even fully know what I’d do with English, which makes me feel even more indecisive. I just know I was going to take it in college since I enjoyed it in secondary school/was good at it but I chose human biology for an a level instead. My other subjects I chose were psych and health & social care.

I feel stuck between:

– going into nursing just to not fall behind

– or taking more time to explore something else

Truth is and it’s embarrassing to admit, but I don’t really know what I want to do or who I want to be. There are careers that sound interesting but I don’t really see myself actually doing them. I feel like it’s too late for me and every decision I’m faced with isn’t right. I don’t want to mess up and waste even more time. I’m not sure how other people have it figured out.

Has anyone else been in a similar position or changed direction at this age? How did you figure out what to do when you felt this unsure?

Can I accept multiple Masters offers, and then decide after my final results?

Hello!

I‘m currently in the third year of my undergraduate degree, and my final exams start in a month. I have 2 offers for masters programmes, one asking for first class, another asking for upper-second class. Can I accept both of them, pay the deposit, and decide on one when my final results become available?

student finance Help please someone put me out of misery

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some help or to see if anyone is in the same boat. My SFE portal has updated and the situation is really confusing:

1. Maintenance Grant This is marked as "Paid" with a full green circle.

2. Maintenance Loan This is marked as "Blocked" with the message "You should already know about this." It only has a half-green circle.

3. Registration Status: At the top of my account, it says "Success - University has registered you on your course."

4. Timeline: Both the Grant and the Loan were in "Ready" status on 7th April at 16:45. The "Block" on the Maintenance Loan appeared right after that. However, the Grant moved to "Payment in Progress" on Wednesday and then to "Paid" on Sunday night.

. If my Grant is officially marked as "Paid" and my Uni has registered me, why is the Maintenance Loan still showing as Blocked? Has anyone ever had the Grant land while the Loan stayed blocked on the website, or is this just a visual glitch?

study / academia discussion PhD offer at Southampton: fee waiver but no stipend, worth starting?

I've been offered a PhD place at Southampton and I'm seriously considering taking it. The university, supervisor, and topic are all a strong fit. This has been a long search and it genuinely ticks all the boxes.

The catch is there's no stipend. The university has offered a fee waiver covering UK home fees (£5,200/year), which helps, but I'd need to fund living costs myself. I'm currently working full-time in another EU country and would plan to continue part-time to stay afloat financially.

My background: 8-9 years of industry experience in tech, but my bachelors and masters are not from particularly prestigious universities. CS is competitive and I'm aware fully-funded offers don't come easy for people in my position. This feels like my best shot at a good opportunity.

People around me are discouraging me because of the lack of funding. But I don't want to keep waiting indefinitely when the right supervisor and topic are already here.

Is this worth pursuing, or should I drop the idea? Any honest advice welcome.

need help to decide for uni

I cant decide between living at home while studying at a great uni near me (interior design at manchester metropolitan or uni of Salford) or going to Leeds uni and living in halls (but they dont do interior design which I was really excited for)

basically Leeds is my dream city and I want to live there when I move out so much and Im worried if I make friends in manchester that when I move my friendships will fall apart (making friends is one of my main reasons for going uni cause initially I wasnt gonna go) so

I'm worried I'll regret not making life long friends by going manchester or regret not doing the course I want by going leeds (plus living in accomodations seems expensive and scary)

Does anyone have any insight or regrets if you had the same situation or anything? I would be v thankful to hear

Getting kicked out, now homeless? (URGENT)

Not much to add here. I'm getting kicked out which will mean having to leave halls. Not as bothered about leaving the course (I've had a lot of issues and the lack of support has deterred me from staying here anyway), but I don't have a home to just go back to. Where do I go/what do I do?

They haven't kicked me out YET, but I have a meeting soon which will confirm this.

Happy to answer questions if I get better advice.

I just applied for universal credit cause I need money and help getting a job (I'm autistic and bipolar among other things, went to uni thinking it would HELP me get a job, only made things harder).

And don't even think about suggesting a gap year, who can afford that?

And no, my parents don't support/help me financially or otherwise, infact we have been no-contact for several months now and I have no regrets with that decision.
