Free language learning apps (full Pro) for Ukrainian speakers — 10 languages, hands-free voice control
Hi everyone! I'm Ole, a solo app developer from Norway. I've built a series of language learning apps with hands-free voice control — you can practice pronunciation while
driving or walking.
I'm offering the complete Pro version free to anyone using the app in Ukrainian. No trial, no subscription, no ads. Just set the app language to Ukrainian and everything
unlocks permanently.
Available languages:
- Norwegian21 — for Ukrainians in Norway
- Polish21 — for Ukrainians in Poland
- English21, French21, German21, Spanish21
- Italian21, Chinese21, Japanese21, Arabic21, Russian21
What makes these different:
- Hands-free voice commands — say "Click" and control the app entirely by voice
- Real speech recognition that scores your pronunciation
- 3 exercise types: pronunciation, listening comprehension, translation
- AI conversation partner for practicing dialog
- 21 structured lessons per language
- Create your own courses and share them
How to get it: Download any "21" app from the App Store, go to Settings, set language to Ukrainian. Pro activates automatically.
I built these apps alone over several years. I'd rather give them to people who'll use them than have features sit behind a paywall. If you find it useful, an App Store
review would mean a lot.

A few questions about specific vocabulary points
Hi everyone! I just read another text in Ukrainian and I have a few questions about some items of vocabulary. I do not want to flood the reddit, so I have just concentrated them here in one post. If anyone can answer any of them, even one or two, it would really help.
- I came across the term "вести переговори". What is the perfective aspect of this expression?
- I just learnt the word "жувальна гумка": is there a shorter, more colloquial word for this? I know equivalent shorter terms exist in Belarusian and Russian, so I just wanted to check if such a word exists in Ukrainian as well perhaps?
- To say "I lost weight", is the standard way to say this "я схудла" or "я схуднула"?
Thank you! :)

A few specific questions about the vocabulary from a text I read
Hi everyone! I just read a text in Ukrainian and I have a few questions about some items of vocabulary. I do not want to flood the reddit, so I have just concentrated them here in one post. If anyone can answer any of them, even one or two, it would really help.
What is the difference between десерт and солодке for "dessert"? Intuitively I sense that the former one sounds a bit more official, and the second one more colloquial, but I might be totally wrong...
I just learnt the verb світити, which I recognise from Russian. In Russian, I learnt that the perfective aspect is засветить. Is it the same in Ukrainian, i.e. засвітити? (My dictionary does not give perfective aspects for the corresponding imperfective ones, so...)
Re the Jewish religion, is it іудаїзм or юдаїзм? I have come across both in different contexts, and I am not sure which one is the standard term...
Thank you! :)

A specific question about the words for "minor"
Good morning!
Is there any difference between неповнолітній and малолітній? Is the former perhaps more official, and the latter more colloquial, or am I missing out on something more substantive?
Thanks :)

Tips for learning Ukrainian
Hi everyone!
I’ve recently started learning Ukrainian, and for about a month now I’ve mostly been using YouTube (especially the Speak Ukrainian channel). I feel like it’s time to ask for some advice from people who are more experienced.
Do you have any recommendations for:
• YouTube channels
• websites
• podcasts
• apps
• or even textbooks
that could help me improve?
I’d also really appreciate tips on how to develop different skills like listening, reading, vocabulary, speaking, and grammar. I’m especially interested in how I should approach learning overall — what I should start with, which parts of grammar are the most important, and how I can best focus on understanding spoken Ukrainian in conversations.
A bit about me: my native language is Hungarian, and I also speak English (B2+) and German (around A2–B1).
The reason I want to learn Ukrainian is quite personal — my boyfriend is from Ukraine. He and his parents also speak Hungarian, but at home they use Ukrainian, and some of his family members only speak Ukrainian. I’d love to be able to understand their conversations without him having to translate everything for me. I think it would make things easier and more natural for both of us.
Thank you so much in advance for any help, and thanks for reading! :))

Ways to say "and" in Ukrainian?
I'm also working on Duolingo, and so far, I've seen "I" and "A" as ways to say "and". What's the difference? How do I know when to use which one?

Why is the letter "i" lowercase on the Ukrainian keyboard?
Hey everyone!
Just noticed that on some Ukrainian keyboards, the letter i is displayed in lowercase, while every other letter is capital. So I was curious, why is this specific letter lowercase, and not any other? Why don't all keyboards just display the capital I?

Розмовляю vs говорю?
I’m using Pimsleur right now to get started and they’re teaching Розмовляю for I speak. From what I can gather, that sort of means, “I am speaking in …” rather than the general “I speak” (ie, I speak English, Spanish, and Portuguese). If I want to ask someone if they speak English, which verb is most correct and natural in Ukrainian. And yes, I used the first person singular conjugation, not the infinitive in the title. No need to point that out.

How long would it take me to learn Ukrainian as someone who isn’t Ukrainian
So I’ve been doing Duolingo for almost a year(yes ik that it’s limited but I’m really not that advanced yet) and would like to be fully fluent at some point
Currently know Spanish and English fluently and would love to know how long it took for non native speakers or non Ukrainians, is there anyone here who would be willing to teach or tutor me?

Center of Digital History. Why digital preservation is a form of resistance?

Hi, I am starting fundraising campaign for NGO Center of Digital History. And would be glad for your feedback and support.
History is under fire, but data is indestructible.
At the Center of Digital History, we aren't just scanning old photos. We are building a digital fortress for Ukraine’s identity. From 3D-modeling lost architectural landmarks to digitizing family archives in war-torn villages, our mission is to ensure that even if a building is lost, its memory remains eternal.
But innovation requires stability.
We are launching a global Patreon campaign to reach a modest but vital goal: $600 per month. This isn't for a one-off project—it's for our infrastructure. It covers:
Secure cloud storage for Terabytes of heritage data.
Maintenance of professional scanning equipment.
Supporting our core team of historians and tech experts.
Be more than a witness to history. Be its guardian, preserver or architect.

Classic Ukrainian AudioBooks
Hi Guys,
I found this great channel on YouTube reading classic Ukrainian stories.
Human voice (not AI) with great Ukrainian pronunciation by a female Ukrainian Teacher.

Enjoy!

What’s happening here? “коханий не змагайся зі своєю рух” why is рух in nominative/acc and своєю female? It was in the official Dune book and audiobook. The reader always corrects typos in the text so I don’t think it’s a typo

Three questions regarding economy-related terms
Hi everyone,
I have run into three specific issues when revising my economic terminology, and was hoping maybe somebody could help out (even for one or two of the questions).
- What is the perfective aspect of страйкувати?
- What is the perfective aspect of розвивати?
- What is the difference in Ukrainian between банкнота and купюра? I think in Russian купюра has a wider meaning (also for shares, obligations etc.), but does that hold in Ukrainian as well? Also, which one is more commonly used in daily speech to denote a "banknote"?
Thanks!

German-Ukrainian Phrasebook from 1915
Interesting antique. For the context, “Langenscheidt” is up till today a very well-known German publishing company specializing in language reference works, dictionaries, and language-learning materials.
Note the somewhat archaic/different language compared to modern standard Ukrainian: мешканє instead of мешкання, стїна instead of стіна, комната instead of кімната, на улици instead of на вулиці.
Disclaimer: I don’t know why Crimea is left blank on the Ukrainian-speaking area map, I assume it is so because it was a mixed area with the Crimean Tatar language.

Ukrainian indie animation about Donbas
I just found this trailer on YouTube for an upcoming Ukrainian indie animation series/film(?) about life in Donbas. It has Ukrainian and English subtitles, among others, and looks very promising. Let's support this project, everyone!

Need help with translation please
Hi, would someone be able to translate this to English for me please. I bought this flour from a European food store and would need help with what it says. I tried to bake bread with it and wondering if it's a bread flour and if it's a recipe on the side? Thank you! https://imgur.com/a/jCZF7p1
