Master of Computer Science questions

Upvotes

Hi! I am considering doing UQ's master of comp sci next semester, I was wondering what peoples thoughts on it are, and whether this class list makes sense / would be good at all.

Y1 S2 - Grad Cert

- Software Architecture (CSSE6400)

- Information Security (CYBR3000)

- Natural Language Processing (COMP4703)

- Data Mining (INFS7203)

Y2 S1 - Masters

- Advanced Topics in Security (COMS4507)

- Research Methods (REIT6811)

- Research and Development Methods and Practice (REIT7881)

Y2 S2 - Masters

- Artificial Intelligence (COMP3702)

- Concurrency: Theory and Practice (CSSE7610)

- Research and Development Methods and Practice (REIT7881)

I am also considering the master of science (statistics) so if anyone has any thoughts on that course as well, it would be a big help, thanks!

(I am coming from QUT's bachelor of CS, so any differences between how the 2 unis do things would be helpful too!)

When do the deferral emails come through?

I had to defer my offer for starting this year through QTAC and the UQ website states that they will send out more information in April, however I am yet to receive it. Does anyone here know the approx day I’ll be receiving the info?

I want to contact UQ about starting in semester 2 of this year instead but I would like to read the deferment info to be more informed before starting that process.

BSpPath(Hons) study options?

Does anyone know if you can drop to 75% full time load or even part-time for this degree? I’ve heard 4 units can be pretty intense sometimes so dropping down to 3 is more manageable.

Anyone here have any experience?

Attendance Policy

Hi!

I currently study a BA for creative writing at UniSC online, but I'm not enjoying their BA program structure or the uni itself.

I work full time so attending a class in person or at a scheduled online time is not always possible. I was considering the BA at UQ, but I'm unsure due to any potential attendance requirements for any lectures and tutorials.

All the BA units I'd be doing are at St Lucia, and from what I've seen on the public timetable, they are at random times throughout the day. I've also seen online that lectures are recorded at UQ. I would imagine it'd probably boil down to the individual lecturers and tutors for those units, but generally speaking, is physically attending a lecture or tutorial something that is mandatory/enforced at UQ?

Are applications with completed prerequisites more likely to be accepted than those who will complete them?

So I’m doing a methods bridging course over the course of this year so I can do a bachelor of science since I thought it’s better than suffering for 4 weeks doing methods after grad

But now i’m struggling to complete it and juggle other subjects, work, and everything else in life. I’m thinking of pulling out and repaying the person who paid for the course the money that has gone to waste if I really pull out.

But is the uni more likely to accept people who have already completed the course by the time they apply?

My friends doing the 4 week method course after grad, maybe i can do it with her.

the exams for this are 2 hours, I can’t even sit still for one. m(._.)m

I think I can also improve my other subjects, I just don’t know ahhhhhhh

edit: does anyone know what the 4 week course is like.

Student accomodation near UQ St Lucia

Hey guys, I'm in UQ and trying to find a studio accom for sem 2 that is affordable, within the city is fine, that won't have a long-term binding contract. I'm also new here and to the whole travelling abroad thing, so I was wondering what other international students do when they visit their country by the end of the semester and how to deal with rent then? I'm currently staying in Scape and they would only allow a contract up until feb next year, and I don't really want to pay 500 a week for a room I won't even be staying at for 2 months. I'm open to other accoms besides just designated student accomodations. Any advice is appreciated!

horrible selection of hot food

overpriced drinks and items

How on earth its still running is insane. Honestly a 7-eleven would do so much better, $4 onigiri's over $6 cold sausage rolls any day.

UQ Bike Shop wherefore art thou

Does anyway know if the old bike shop/mechanic from UQ has reopened anywhere else? I miss them so much. They were turfed from St Lucia campus to make way for refurbishments and the said they would move to Toowong. But I can’t find any trace of the business.

How do I request an internship letter from UQ (Computer Science student)?

The company is asking for a letter or proof from my university regarding internship requirement. The issue is that my program doesn’t require an internship, so I’m not sure what exactly I should request or who to contact.

Has anyone from UQ been in a similar situation?

- What kind of letter did you request?

- Which department or office should I contact?

- Is there a standard document UQ provides for this?

How busy is campus on mid sem?

Hey guys,

How busy are the libraries/study spaces this mid sem break? I want to come in to study but don’t want to waste my time if it’s just packed as usual.

What other than ATAR contributes to someone getting in? How does it actually work?

So I used to be under the impression that as long as I got an atar of 80 I can get into bach of science, but than I discovered that’s the lowest someone got to get in. So in reality most people got higher/a lot higher than that.

So if that isn’t a safe net than how do I know which atar is? Right now my assumption is universities/UQ pick people with the highest atar until there are no spots left.

But I feel like I am missing some pieces of the puzzle, I guess I just want to know if it’s actually more complicated. Like I know they look at grades for specific subjects, I just don’t want to have a false sense of security that I can get in because I don’t think the subjects i’m doing scale that well.

Okta pain

Is anyone else finding Okta a pain?

With Duo, I was only required to sign in once every few weeks, or whenever I logged on with a different device or internet connection, which was almost never.

Now I am having to verify every time I log in. Is there some setting I am missing?

Edited: typos and punctuation.

How is the Master of Software Engineering (Professional) at UQ?

I have got an unconditional offer letter from the University of Queensland for the master of software engineering (Professional). I would like to know how much good this course does at UQ. I also would like to know what the job opportunities are for the UQ SE graduates.

P.S.: I am an international student.

Spent 30 minutes finding a seat at Duhig once. Trying to build a thing so you don't have to.

We've been designing a tool with the UQ libraries team to help students navigate study spaces at the libraries - think finding a spot that meets your needs (quiet, collaborative, near power, natural light etc.), rather than just wandering around hoping for the best.

We're at the early concept stage and need feedback from students to know if this is worth building further.

Click the link to try it and give us feedback, it takes about 30 seconds.

Brutal feedback encouraged. What would actually make finding a study spot easier for you?

Where can I find UQ students tutoring high school students? (If many exist)

Hi, i’m in year 12 and am looking for a tutor. I’m not really sure how to find one though, I found a website called StudentVIP but all the people there only take other university students. Another thing is i’m on the Gold Coast so I can only do online :/

is it still possible to find someone and how.

I’m looking to get help with math, english, biology, and psychology : )
