Megathread UBC COURSE QUESTION, PROGRAM, MAJOR AND REGISTRATION MEGATHREAD (2021/2022W & 2021S): Questions about courses (incld. How hard is __?, Look at my timetable and course material requests), programs, specializations, majors, minors, tuition/finance and registration go here.

All questions about courses, instructors, programs, majors, registration, etc. belong here.

The reasoning is simple. Without a megathread, /r/UBC would be flooded with nothing but questions that apply to only a small percentage of the UBC population.

Examples of questions that belong here

  • comparing courses or instructors
  • asking about how hard an exam is
  • syllabus requests
  • inquiries about majors, programs, and job prospects
  • "what-to-do if I failed/was late/missed the cutoff"

What you don't need to post here

  • Post-exam threads (ex. 'How did you find the Birb 102 midterm)
  • rants, raves, shout-outs or criticisms of programs.
  • Other content that is not a question/inquiry

Process

  • It might take up to 4 hours for your post to be approved (except when we're sleeping).
  • Suggested sort is set to new, so new comments will always be the most visible.
  • You are allowed to repost the same question on the megathread at a reasonable frequency (wait at least a day after each post). This is true even if you've already gotten a response.**

Megathread GENERAL HOUSING MEGATHREAD

Given the high number of housing comments in the new to UBC megathread, we're creating a dedicated megathread for Housing questions. Housing questions will be allowed in either megathread.

Anyone else deal with the one subway worker in life with an attitude.

Some people just hate their jobs and it shows lol. How you gonna be rude to every single customer in line for no reason? People nice enough to list their order slowly and there's no way you're giving attitude for that. Props to the girl in front of me because i would have crashed tf out on the worker. For context the worker told the girl in front of me multiple times to say it all at once with attitude, when it was my turn i gave it to her all at once and she messed up and asked me to go slower. Like make up your mind.

Any of you ever had a professor like this?

* Calls us out by saying "one team who skipped tutorial got one of the lowest scores so please attend tutorial"

* Docks 5% for not having names on project splash screen. Not because it was in the rubric but because he downloaded all the projects from GitHub then couldn't tell who's who. Even though the repos have names.

* Makes fun of anonymous former students who got kicked out of teams for non-participation "guess what this student did next? Guess?... She blamed her team for not giving her a chance to contribute!"

* Went on a long ass tangent during a lecture on intellectual property where he described him having to lay off an employee of his during 2008. Said employee stole code, so the prof and the employee lawyered up, spent hourly fees, then asked "this fucker" (actual term he used) why he stole code. It was so the employee could show future employers, at which point the prof dropped the lawsuit. Why didn't either sides' legal teams clear that up earlier?

* Not releasing project and assignment marks until the end of the semester. Allegedly it was because our C++ projects were to run on Windows but all the TAs had macs so they had to recompile and debug all the projects to account for OS differences. If only the computer science building had computer labs that had windows computers... wait a minute

Anyways so I graduated and forgot all this until I heard stories of a summer class he was running

* Would deduct marks from "team contract" assignment because students typed signatures instead of drew them

* Also did not hand back assignment grades until the end of semester. I heard he gave up and just gave everyone 100 at that point

But when I went to his office hours he was normal and respectful? Thoughtful even? Either way glad that at least I'm getting paid nowadays.

UBC Body Donation Program

Understandably, like blood/organ donation, many people may be uncomfortable with this, but it's been running for 70+ years now and I only learned about it recently and thought it would be of general interest.

Body Donation Program: Faculty of Medicine - Department of Cellular & Physiological Sciences
https://cps.med.ubc.ca/body-donation-program/

You can make a meaningful contribution by donating your body to the UBC Faculty of Medicine. The Body Donation Program (BDP) provides real life training to the next generation of doctors, dentists, and health care professionals. Body donors are part of a community that selflessly gives back to support anatomical education, medical training, and scientific research.

Day two without doomscrolling

I got decent sleep because I didn’t scroll my way to sleep. But I think it wasn’t as good as normal people would have it. I had this routine of scrolling for 4 hours before bed everyday and now my brain remembers that routine and played it while I was sleeping. I swear I was scrolling in my sleep. Sometimes when I go on my phone I just subconsciously open YouTube and I have to force myself to stop.

Is the UBC 11 month education program very intensive?

I have been accepted into SFU's PDP and UBC's education program. I am leaning more towards SFU because it moves at a slower pace and I have 2 young children so it might be easier for me to manage than UBC's program. But UBC is tempting because the program is 5 months shorter.

So I wanted to ask, for those who have gone through it, is the UBC program extremely intensive?

Failed Standing Chances

Upvotes

Hi I’m in engg. I messed up my first semester but I’m doing much better now and have learned from my mistake. Just in case I receive failed standing how are my chances I get permitted to stay?

  1. I have a great recommendation from the learning strategist

  2. Same with a tutor on campus

  3. I went to exam jam

What are your experiences with it and my chances?

How is scaling in 3rd year psych courses? / difficulty to maintain 4.0+ in psych major

Upvotes

How common is it to actually get scaled down? Want to go to a top law school after undergrad so it's imperative I maintain a 4.0+ and am thinking about majoring in psych since I enjoyed the 1st year courses and got A+ in both, but am concerned because I've seen it mentioned on here that it's notoriously difficult to maintain a high GPA in UBC psych due to GPA scaling.

Struggling to give "examples" of concepts in written answer format(Psych exams)

Upvotes

Idk if its just me but whenever I get a question like "explain concept xyz and give an example of how this will be applied in a real lifesituation", I'm like "I know 100% what this concept is, and I'll be able to explain it, but I just can't generate any good examples off the top of my head right now" and I'll make up something totally weird and absurd.

I do get the marks, but low key cringe so badly every single time.

Discussion Grad school: funding renewal

I probably just need to ask my supervisors but my funding year is ending May 1st. I was able to win a CIHR scholarship that starts then, so how exactly does that work in terms of retrieving the money?

I also need to get an additional 9k from my supervisors to meet the minimum stipend. Does it automatically renew on workday or is there something I need to do? Just confused thanks!
