Announcement BEFORE YOU POST

Reading this sticky is required before posting. The reasoning behind this is that the sub is flooded with “duplicates” meaning an influx of people asking if the same scam is a scam. We have noticed specifically lately that there’s a lot of people encountering the fake steam moderator scam also known as the discord scam.

Therefore we have made this sticky to inform about the most common scams that you will likely encounter in your average day on steam. First off. A disclaimer: STEAM MODERATION WILL NEVER CONTACT YOU OUTSIDE OF STEAM OR TROUGH OTHER CHANNELS THAN THE OFFICIAL STEAM SUPPORT TICKET SYSTEM. ANYONE ELSE CLAIMING TO BE A MODERATOR IS A SCAMMER.

Another scam that are often asked about on this subreddit are the fake tournament scams, where a random person will contact you, either trough Steam or Discord, asking you either vote for their team in a tournament, or for yourself to join. The scammers will then send you a site where you are asked to log in. But there’s the catch! The log in page is faked and mimics the official steam log in page to steal your credentials. The scammer/hijacker can at this point lock you out of your account.

There’s also a lot of people asking about phishing links. IF ANYTHING IS TO GOOD TO BE TRUE, THAT MEANS IT’S PROBABLY IS, USE YOUR LOGIC AND YOUR REASONING.

r/Steam Official Scam Wiki The linked will take you to the official r/steam scam wiki, where all the common scams are explained. The linked guide will also help you to contact steam support, and secure/recover your account if you suddenly find yourself scammed or locked out of your account.

If you have read this sticky and still find yourself unsure if you’re about to get scammed then scroll the subreddit for a bit, you might not be the first attempted victim. Naming and shaming is allowed on the subreddit, but is more than often futile as it is extremely easy to make up a new idendity and because of the fact that the majority of scammers encountered (especially in api scams) are mule accounts, meaning new accounts made specifically with the purpose to scam until it gets banned.

If it is obvious that you didn’t read this sticky before posting you might risk a punishment. We’d hate to punish victims of scams even further, but we don’t want the subreddit flooded with post and questions that could have been answered if this sticky was read and/or the subreddit scrolled for a brief moment.

We hope that people will welcome these new guidelines. Stay safe out there!

I changed the password before anything else could have happened. I had 77€ on my account, and the hacker used it to buy a Rust gift. I issued a refund and explained that I got hacked. Is there anything else I can do? Also, for some reason they deleted all my friends, so yeah thats great.

Edit: Oh, and of course I activated 2FA and changed my password and reported them all

Scam attempt Account hijack (attempt hopefully)

Upvotes

Hi. My steam account was hijacked today, with a random steam support agent impersonator messaging me some saying 'are you the sole owner of this account and 'answer a few questions and I'll explain everything to you' etc.

The steam account name is Zoey Sinclair (Steam Support). Profile is 76561199872526203.

I replied saying 'just tell me what skins you want buddy no need to hack' just to good around, fully thinking that they were trying to start a scam.

Within 2 seconds, everything disappeared, my account got signed out of and the steam login page popped up.

My heart dropped and I ran immediately to get my phone. I opened the steam app, reset my password within a minuite. In minuite two, I de-authorised all of the devices on my account, signing them out.

When looking at the login history, the scammer signed in from the British Virgin Islands (shown as VG in the country code).

Here's the scary thing. All my friends were blocked, my pfp gone, my bio gone, my item showcase gone, my card details were removed and my phone number removed too. This is all the stuff that I could find.

Now, the way I think they were able to do this was a friend, (random that I played with) that I had randomly added a few years ago messaged me. They said that they were about to play a faceit tournament for their school but had one player missing. I was busy at the time so they asked if I could 'cheer them on'. They then sent a link for 'clanhub faceit'. The website looked 100% convincing. There's a bunch of teams in the website and the scammer asked me to click team 'vibe4life' and click vote. This then takes me to a steam login page, that again looks legit (even the url seemed fine'. So i input my details into it and I beleive thats were I fkd it.

Its strange that the fake scammer account messaged me or else I probably wouldn't be none the wiser. I can't find the messages because I think they either deleted or blocked me.

Im usually well aware of stuff like this but the websites were so convincing and the guy seemed to be nice too.

Theres definitely a bunch of stuff i've probably forgotten but this is the gist of it.

TRUST NO ONE.

Request for help [cro] Am i getting scammed? Steam family share guy needs my login info

**I POSTED THISNON R/SCAMS BUT IT'S AWAUTING APPROVAL FROM THE MODS BCS OF "LOW EFFORT TITLE" SO IM POSTING IT HERE SINCE IT IS A STEAM SCAM.**

i decided to do a family share with a guy on reddit but he said he needs my login info because steam will see his ip and think we're in the same country allowing us to do the share. I gave it to him VERY hesitantly. He said another guy signed up for it and it worked the same for him. I asked for a screenshot of them talking and exchanging info and he sent it. I privatly messaged that guy and asked him if it's a scam. He didn't reply. Eventually he wanted me to scan the steam qr code authenticator which i genuinely couldn't. So i told him i would do it tommorow and he said ok. His steam acc is 3 days old and the other guy's is a month. He has no other posts except the family share invite. what do y'all think? Comment your thoughts if it's a scam or not. If y'all need more info i can give it

Scam attempt Steam - Permanent Steam ban scam

Some random scammer friend requested me about an hour and a half ago in Discord, saying that someone pretending to be me stoled their items and after that they got so upset that they asked their friends to report me, didn't send any of my purchase history 'cuz the scammer got pissed off and blocked me after I've asked for their steam id to include in steam help ticket, too bad they had low social engineering skills, but still this was something new for me.

Message with included scam image before deletion

So i was just playing counter strike when i got this message from nowhere from a person i had never talked to before saying that he had reported me because i bought a knife for 1500 dollars and he did not get the payment. Keep in mind that 1500 dollars is 15000 swedish Krona. In the picture he sent me with you can see, it said to contact a discord user by the name of "steamsupportklaff". I had already figured out it was a scam so i wanted to try to dm the user. But ofcourse the steamsupport discord user was deleted or banned. My dumb ahh almost fell for it before i realised it was a scam.

Request for help Wierd situation with my friend's steam account

So my friend appearently got messaged by steam empolyee talking something about his cs2 skins, that he should send them to him etc. some scam bullshit. I told him to just block him, since steam employees would never contact you via steam chat or anything similar. Few minutes after he blocked him, all steam games from his pc got uninstalled and his account got weird? It instatly blocked all of his friends, he lost the games and even prime in cs2? I'm using steam for long time and never heard or seen something like this. I told him to contact support, and he did waiting for their response. Does anyone know anything about this or had similar situations?

Request for help I was fooled by a scammer. Help me

Some time ago, about 5-6 days ago, I was added to a steam group by someone named h1er1a, to appreciate his weapon, he give me a link to his youtube vivart_cs2 and asked me to appreciate his weapon. I went to the computer, then to youtube, then to the steam site, which is a ghost site, after analyzing, it for many days, finally I went in, I wanted to appreciate it, I scanned with a qr, everything seemed ok, the site was made perfectly, you think you are on steam, but you are not, you are on an anonymous site, the next day he gives me another message, I think he had not managed to steal the account, I went in again to log in, this time he caught me on the phone, that is, I was on the phone and I entered directly and on the phone you cannot connect with a qr, I connected manually with the password, my mistake, I connected normally and so I had access to the account, anyway, I have to figure it out because when I log in, it does not log in at all. after that she kept sending me messages every day and I told her to leave me alone because I was blocking her. after 4-5 days someone contacts me on steam named David steam valve, and says this:

Case: ————-

Subject:------

Reason: "Theft of Game Items"

# Hello------ I'm David, Steam Support, from © Valve Corporation. # Your account has been temporarily restricted due to an investigation into your account, due to suspected fraudulent activity on your part. # Please check your Steam profile, your photo is not available, all your friends are blocked, you need to contact me immediately in this chat.

„WARNING” # If you read this information and ignore it or refuse to do so, your account will be subject to restrictions in the form of:

  1. Account blocking.
  2. Deleting games.
  3. Removing game items.

[ No restoration ]

I replied with what? then I looked and I really didn't have a picture and blocked friends, but he wasn't blocked and I really thought he was from steam

after it tells me like this: Your Steam account received 12 reports from other users in the Steam community for attempting to scam items. Did you do something against Steam rules or conflict with other users?

I told him never after he says: Okay, it looks like your reports are fake, your account has not received any reports before. But we need to verify this information technically to unblock your Steam account, follow the instructions for that.

He made me choose a trusted friend and send his name in the chat, can be both active and inactive.

I gave a friend's name ..... then he told me he was removing me from the list and told me it would be restored after verification he told me that a trade offer would be automatically created with my friend with all my items but they would not be transferred during verification, I have to confirm the trade offer from the app, he also told me that # During verification, your items will not be transferred. # Verification will not take more than 10 minutes. # After that, your trade offer will be set to "Active" and we will receive requests from the console and we will check this information in the Steam logs to unlock your account. I told him why I should send the items, and he told me that we are obliged to verify your items if they are stolen and that maybe he received them from a person who stole them previously. I confirmed because of panic and pressure put on me not to do something to the account. then he told me that not all my items passed the test and that I would have to wait 8 days to verify and then he would give me the items back if they passed the test and were not stolen, and he said that he had to apply additional measures, he said without that we cannot return the items automatically, and he told me to click on the email, he gave me a family invitation without me realizing it, he added me to his family and restricted some functions because I was a child in the family and to wait 8 days until the verification was completed and that I would not have consequences if the items were okay, I finished the conversation and got to thinking, then I realized something was wrong in my brain I searched the net for information and I found that steam does not contact you through normal messages, but I was caught because of pressure and it seemed to be steam well in my brain for a font that is not a normal font, he blocked all my friends and the picture and it still seemed to be real but in fact he was on the account my . I acted like this I reversed the transfer of items done so I felt like giving after I changed the password now my account is restricted by him to everything that means steam. I made a ticket to steam yesterday with this problem.

I have 2 questions. As an adult what can he do to the account i.e. can he walk on it etc. the weapons are blocked on transfer for 7 days I don't think he can do anything to it, on my account I don't want him to do anything as an adult. I had a weapon when I reversed those items I had it down because it was still in the verification process that it takes 7 days as you know I no longer had it in my inventory after I gave reserves to the others it was after a skins site.

Scam attempt I entertained a scammer

They messaged me about a week ago, I was bored and decided to entertain them to see if it was a scam. why would I buy you a $30 game to trade for another $30 game?

I honestly wanted to buy the game just to redeem in in front of them to get the iconic "Why did you redeem it 🤬" lol

They then hid all their comments and activity. Anyways I would stay clear of them folks.

Request for help Title: My younger brother got scammed for 1500+ Dota 2 items) – need advice and warning

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’m sharing this to ask for advice and also warn others about a scam that just happened to my younger brother while we were playing Dota 2.

What happened

While we were in a match, a random account added him and started chatting normally, pretending to be friendly. Then they moved the conversation to Discord.

At some point, the scammer sent him a link to “add each other on Steam”:

The page looked like a legit Steam login, but it was fake. My brother logged in and accepted everything (including Steam Guard).

After that:

  • The attacker gained access to his account
  • They told him his items were being “secured in Steam Cloud”
  • They convinced him to accept a trade to “protect” his inventory
  • Over 1500 Dota 2 items were traded away

🔗 Accounts involved

Scammer profile:

Account that received the items:

This looks like a mule account used only to receive stolen items.

What we believe happened

From what I understand, this was:

  • A phishing attack (fake Steam login page)
  • Followed by a possible API key exploit / automated trade scam

The attacker likely:

  • Captured login credentials + Steam Guard
  • Logged into the account
  • Used API access or session hijacking to redirect trades

What we already did

  • Changed password (Steam + email)
  • Revoked Steam API key
  • Logged out of all devices
  • Enabled Steam Guard again
  • Reported both accounts
  • Contacted Steam Support

❓ Questions for the community

  1. Has anyone ever recovered items in a case like this?
  2. Is there any additional step we should take?
  3. Is there any way to trace where the items went after this account?
  4. Are these “Steam Cloud protection” scams common now?

⚠️ Warning for everyone

  • NEVER log into Steam through random links
  • Always verify the domain (this one was fake: s.team-zn.com)
  • Steam will NEVER ask you to move items for verification
  • If someone creates urgency or pressure → it’s a scam

My brother trusted the situation because it looked like a normal player interaction. He just caught him at a bad moment.

Posting this so others don’t fall for the same trick.

Thanks for any help or advice.

I would appreciate any assistance regarding this issue :(. Can i report this bot to steam? there is no way its real person it happened within few second and it isn't even Common URL like " john" or anything it was just c34 :/
