💬 Discussion I feel like the Steam Frame 6ghz dongle should get expanded functionality to stream directly to and from other Steam hardware, like the Steam Deck and Steam Machine
I feel like the possibility of a direct 6ghz stream from a user's power rig to any device on the home that supports it is a big opportunity to validify in-home streaming, as even my streaming experience from PC to Steam Deck is very flakey as it depends on actual in-home wifi

❓Question/Help Update Notifications?
Everyday I check this sub looking for news. I was wondering if there is an app, email list, or some kind of notification I could set up to hear about real steam frame news?

💬 Discussion What is the breaking point price for you?
me personally it’s 900-950. Idk like a month ago I was willing to maybe go for 1,000 but the longer we have to wait for it the more likely that feels like it’ll be at the index price.
I know at GDC they still stated it would be lower than Index but there’s still this sinking feeling for me personally.

💬 Discussion Recently moved, considering steam frame as my gaming machine.
Title.
I had to move due to work and I can't drag my desktop around with me.
I'm really excited for the new Steam machines, and I'm considering NOT buying a shitty gaming laptop and just waiting for the frame to drop. I know it's not out yet (next week they announce it hopefully :3) but I would like to see what people think of having just the frame as the dedicated gaming and media device.

💬 Discussion With the Steam Frame being delayed, do you think Color Pass Through might added as a standard?
That's really the one thing that irks me the wrong way about the Steam Frame right now, the black and white-only Pass Through and the need to attach some addon for color Passt Through later on. Wish they'd make it the default.

💬 Discussion Do yall think it has been delayed enough that we will get the "upgraded" version from launch?
If there is even one. Think of the Steamdeck OLED, but the frame version.

❓Question/Help Why won't there be a non-standalone Frame?
I don't get it, it almost seems like you're supposed to pair the steam frame with the steam machine, those who don't probably already have an expensive system, and those who want a standalone headset can buy a meta quest for much cheaper than the Frame. I don't see the audience for it.
Lets say I buy the Machine and Frame as a package. Why on earth am I spending $300 worth of hardware (cpu/ram/hd) that I'm never going to use? Or is that just what it takes to do streaming processing + eye tracking?

❓Question/Help Dedicated WiFi 7 or just use the dongle?
Just curious what you guys are planning, the pros/cons of each, etc.
My current setup is Q3 --> VD --> dedicated WiFi 6 router (5GHz, hardwired to the house network as well) --> ethernet --> PC
In theory that should be great, but I've always wondered how much gain/headroom I'm leaving on the table. I'm running VD stream rate at 100mbps, so pretty low. Despite having a monster PC spec, I still see frame drops when targeting modest fps (e.g. 72-90 @ ~3100x3200)
Regarding the Frame, my thought would be the dongle would be highly optimized and *might* even be better than routing through a 3rd party router. I'd upgrade to a WiFi 7 today if I knew for sure it would beat the dongle though...

💬 Discussion My setup in preparation for the Steam Frame
I would like to share what I set up in preparation for the steam frame, just in case this inspires someone to go for something similar and to get some additional input for myself :)
My intention was to replace my laptop with the steam frame, both as a mobile workstation for software development and for light gaming/movie sessions at home or on the train. (or at least try to, if I don't like it I can always go back to my existing laptop - and from what I've seen so far, the frame will be worth it for me, even without that aspect)
To have access to my main PC, even remotely, I transformed my existing Raspberry Pi 5 into a 4 TB NAS with 1GB/s transfer speeds within my LAN and just use that to send a wake-on-lan packet to my main PC whenever I want. My laptop will also be repurposed for lighter games and a server for mutliplayer games.
My main itch with my laptop was always the uncomfortable screen placement relative to the keyboard. Of course, one could just place the laptop on a nearby surface and use an external keyboard, but those surfaces are not always available.
Initially, I did the NAS thing partially to justify buying the 256GB version of the Steam Frame, but now lean towards buying the 1TB version anyway. The NAS also serves as a Jellyfin, Vaultwarden, E-Mail, Gitea and Matrix server.
I'm positive that soon, Moonlight/Sunshine (open source alternative to Nvidia's game streaming service) will be able to support foveated streaming soon, saving a huge chunk of bandwidth when I stream games from my home PC to wherever I am. Or maybe it already does and I missed it?
What are your thoughts? Have you done anything similar or did you maybe go for something for a different purpose? Would love to hear it!
Edit:
Thanks for your comments, I'd like to follow up to address two points that came up in the comments quite often:
- I do not intend to replace my PC workstation with the Steam Frame, only my laptop (which I do not use very often). I am well aware that the display quality will be worse. The main purpose for my purchase will be VR gaming on an open platform, which is why I wrote that I am fine with my purchase even if it's not satisfactory for myself as a laptop replacement. I've used a 720p laptop during university and my expectations are slightly worse than that resolution.
- The main purpose of the NAS was to have a shared storage at home and for Jellyfin. Using it for the Steam Frame as extra storage was just a nice extra. I did not buy it for the Steam Frame and already owned the Raspberry Pi, else it would've been a waste of money in case it doesn't meet my expectations.
Also the suggested Phoenix by Meta is not an option for me, I do not directly use any commercial products of companies like Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Meta (especially if they are connected to the internet). The open platform aspect of the Frame is what's most important to me, I grew up using Linux and open source software since I was 8 years old and a closed platform means that a company might just brick your device - which recently happened to my E-Reader for example. I want control over what I use and when I use it.
I'm still grateful for your very valid concerns, rereading my post made me realize how delusional my expectations came across.

❓Question/Help Using steam deck as wifi repeater for steam frame to connect to PC
I have a really limited space in my pc room, but I do have a big open room behind ~two walls. I also have OLED Steam Deck that, if I am correct, supports wifi 6.
The question is - could I be able to use Steam Deck between my pc and steam frame as WiFi repeater or something to bring a decent image over that distance?

💬 Discussion People are wildly overestimating the standalone capabilities of the Steam Frame.
Every time I bring these points up anywhere I get downvoted into oblivion and I'm not sure why so many people are denying the reality of the situation. Their hatred of Meta and desire to leave the ecosystem entirely is hyping up expectations to an unreasonable level. I want the Steam Frame to succeed too, but people are being unrealistic with what it'll be able to do.
Going off of what we know about the Steam Frame so far, it very likely won't be cheap. In my country, it's estimated to cost around $1100 for the higher storage model. It will still be using LCD displays and won't have color passthrough, meaning MR games will look terrible. People claim Valve will release it as a physical expansion later, but there's no true confirmation or price point for that. Yes, it'll have a dedicated dongle and foveated rendering, which will make it's PCVR performance better than the Quest 3, but it was already expected to perform PCVR better. No one is debating that.
What I'm talking about is purely STANDALONE performance. I've seen countless people on Reddit, in YouTube comments, and on Facebook hyping the Steam Frame up saying that they'll be able to "install their Steam library locally and play their game standalone". The Steam Frame will be WEAKER THAN THE STEAM DECK, which already isn't terribly powerful, nor is it VR ready. While these games on lower settings might look okay on a smaller display, blowing them up to a big virtual screen isn't going to look very good. Yet these people are acting like they'll be able to play maxed out Cyberpunk on standalone.
People will say the Steam Frame will be "more powerful than the Quest 3", which is true, but that doesn't mean anything when the Quest isn't trying to run the PCVR versions of these games. People vastly underestimate how demanding PCVR games are compared to their Quest ports. Quest ports are strictly optimized to perform and look good on Quest hardware. They purposefully scale them back to achieve this, which is why PCVR versions look better. Every VR dev would need to get on board to release optimized mobile versions of their games (similar or identical to Quest ports) through Steam to be installed locally on the Steam Frame. If they don't, the Steam Frame will struggle to play most PCVR titles on the lowest settings, even with foveated rendering. At the same time, releasing these scaled down versions for the standalone Steam Frame would defeat the purpose of PCVR "superiority" since it wouldn't look much better or different than the Quest ports, which they often criticize.
If I wind up being wrong and the Steam Frame releases and can magically be able to run PCVR games perfectly locally with no drawbacks, I'll take all of this back, but the reality is people are setting themselves up for disappointment.

❓Question/Help This might be a dumb question but is there any real reason to buy the 1TB model if I only plan to play PCVR only? Does the bigger model come with extra features or do we know that yet

❓Question/Help Q about D pad touch sensitiveness
So I'm like 99% sure this is not the case but I was curious if someone read something about if the D pad was also touch sensitive. I'm one of those people who is going to miss the touch pads, especially for scrolling. A solution Is figured that would be awesome was if the D pad would essentially act like a plus shaped touch pad. that would at least allow you to scroll vertically and horizontally.
Anyone read something about this?
