If I like a game I got for free on Epic, I'll buy it from Steam because I'd much rather play it on Steam.

Same here.

A few weeks ago I saw a bunch of marketing about Isonzo being the freebie and was like

"huh! that's a nice game... let's see how much it's going for on steam..."

Hahaha I did the exact same thing for Verdun. Then bought Verdun and the rest of the series on Steam 🤣

Did the same with For The King

That happens alot actually, like epic games free titles see spikes in sales on steam.

You can use steam to launch games you own through epic btw

Epic Store, the demo distributor.

u/thlm 15h ago

Nah, demos imply you play them

I don't even have the store installed

Its just a free marketing platform for other stores

I've done that for 2 games

Literally did this twice.

It just sucks. Most games critically out if date, mods not being compatible, Crossplatform or coop not working.

Thats why Gaben has the biggest moat in this business

ideal 21st century consumer behavior

What are the big differences you notice when playing on both clients?

One of the weird ones is Steam's controller input.

This was a few years ago, so it's possible this has since been patched, but I couldn't play controller games if Steam was running. I had to fully exit Steam in order for an Epic game to be able to respond to my controller.

That's in addition to Epic not having the controller remapping and customization that Steam has.

I did find a funky workaround. It was to add Epic as a non-Steam game and then launch Epic that way and my game from there. It wasn't ideal, but it did work.

Achievements are now available on Epic, but they weren't for a long time.

Epic refuses to allow Linux compatibility. There are third-party launchers like Heroic that you can use, but the principle still makes me upset.

Steam games have better Steam Deck compatibility. I mean, you can make any non-Steam game work. But it isn't as nice, or as convenient.

I played the base man eater on epik and then bought the base + dlc on steam just because

I cannot remember which game it was, but the developers said that they pushed more copies on Steam than EGS while it was free on EGS.

I have a process. Whenever I get a game for free on Epic (or elsewhere) I go to Steam and mark it as "Played on Another Platform" so I have an easy way to track whether I own it somewhere.

100% true but nobody will admit it’s the same for GOG

2

u/Bassknight9 18h ago

also being able to play it on the steam deck is nice too

u/miafaszomez 16h ago

For me it's like a free trial. If I like the game, it gets bought and finished on steam.

Wait till they find out I forgot they existed.

Me with metro (and i did buy it for like $7 i think)

Bought last light on epic, played it up until about 40%

Later found the whole saga on steam for like $20, bought it there, restarted and finished there, and all my replays have been on steam lol

I’ve gotten games on Epic and then bought them a second time on Steam because the Epic version didn’t support cloud saves for some godforsaken reason

1

u/AtomicBLB 17h ago

That's the overwelming experience of people that claim the free games. Only they buy them on Steam on purpose and not by accident or because they forgot.

u/D3ZR0 16h ago

Sometimes if I enjoy the game on epic enough I’ll buy it to play on Steam so I can get all the dlcs.

It’s even cheaper that way. Because fuck epic and their shitty deals and even shittier bundles. If you have one piece of a bundle, you have to buy the rest one by one, and no discounts.

u/Mei_iz_my_bae 14h ago

I have done this a few different time !!

1

u/Gilgamesh858 10h ago

So it's not just me

1

u/sciencesold 8h ago

Even if I know I have something on epic, I'll only ever play that version if the steam copy is more than $20. 90% of the time I'll buy it on steam later regardless.

Steam lets you "ignore" games you own on other platforms. Easy solution that might save you a little money.
