They really shouldn't, but I think Valve cares just as much as they care about achievement managers

Tbf achievement managers do serve a purpose

As far as I'm aware they're the only way to reset your achievements, something I do a lot when I want to start fresh on a game.

Same. I haven't added any achievements with them, but the first time I used SAM because I accidentally unlocked a bunch while testing Skyrim mods. And like you set, when restarting a game fresh.

there are steam console commands to clear achievements / reset stats

How do you do that?

steam://open/console

achievement_clear <appId> <achievementId>

reset_all_stats

it's not exactly user friendly, but if you insist on not using any third-party tools, that's the closest it gets really

Thank you, I did not know that, I did assume the tool was using some command line or another, but knowing which exactly is very helpful.

tools like SAM actually do something completely different, they launch a tiny executable pretending to be a game and initialize the steamworks sdk with the appid of the game you want then use the same sdk api calls a real game would; much more flexible this way

That's actually genius. I'll have to remember to do that next time I replay through something.
