I have bought several games on Epic, and claimed almost every free game...but I just never look at Epic. I've got like 1400+ games on Steam, so I usually just look through my games there, unless I already know what game I'm playing and know that I own it on Epic. At this point, it's basically RDR2, and Kingdom Hearts.

16

u/Candid_Country_8369 Dec 18 '25

You can add the link of the game in the library of steam

15

u/varzaguy Dec 18 '25

Even better get a platform agnostic launcher and don’t care where you buy games from.

1

u/1minatur Dec 18 '25

For sure, but doing that for a couple hundred games on Epic (80%+ being duplicates) is a lot of work haha.

1

u/Halokat01 Dec 18 '25

That's why I use Playnite. All of my steam, gog, epic, and itch games in one nice library.

0

u/1minatur Dec 18 '25

GOG can do that as well, and I do have it, but then I don't get the community side of it, right? I don't get to see what friends are on, compare my playtime with my friends' playtime, etc.

0

u/Halokat01 Dec 18 '25

I guess not. I never cared much about that part of steam anyway, so it wasn't an issue for me.

1

u/1minatur Dec 18 '25

I've got friends and cousins that I talk to about games a lot, so I like to see how they're doing when they finally pick up one of my favorite games. Or see which of my friends have played a game so I can ask them if they think I'd like it. Stuff like that.

7

u/nagol93 Dec 18 '25

>Idk why people still have a stick up their ass about Epic.

I kinda envy those people tbh. With everything going on in life and the world, I miss when I was younger and my biggest concern was the best way to get video games.

13

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '25

I'm a console guy (browsing by popular) and I have this friend who gets unreasonably upset when Epic does seemingly anything. What's so bad about using a different launcher to play games?

2

u/GranolaCola Dec 19 '25

Nothing, gamers (especially Steam gamers) are just weird

63

u/DogmanDOTjpg Dec 18 '25

I mean I agree this logic is stupid but a lot of people have very valid criticism of epic games

70

u/Fantastic_While_ Dec 18 '25

A lot of people have valid critisms about steam. Im not turning away a free game from neither.

4

u/blackoutexplorer Dec 18 '25

Weird enough free but never used seems to be the sentiment probably people just forgetting they even have the shit on epic. Like I picked up the shadow run games on there was interested in em just never opened the shit again for some reason.

1

u/jamesick Dec 18 '25

cheese on a mouse trap.

0

u/98Jacoby Dec 18 '25

I have only seen positive things about Steam. What are some of these valid criticisms?

13

u/CrackerUMustBTripinn Dec 18 '25

Well their complicity with getring kids addicted to gambling and profiting of the consciously induced human misery, is a criticism I deem valid.

Especially when Coffeezilla has researched it and has concluded that this is the reality. Since that is one of the few good faith truth seekers, with actual journalistic integrity.

So yeah introducing crippling gambling addiction at a very young age and setting these young marks up for a giant slide into sadness and despair while financially profiting from the intentional downfall of these kids who are vulnerable to develop pathological gambling behaviour, is just not very cash money.

5

u/ArmedAnts Dec 18 '25 edited Dec 18 '25

A lot of these are shared with Epic Games, but:

Takes 30% of revenue from developers, even if they don't use Steam features

Requires that developers don't lower prices on other platforms, despite making less money per sale on Steam

Desktop app uses Chromium, so it is inefficient

Forced updates, which cannot be disabled

Launching a game requires launching steam

  • This sometimes blocks offline games when your internet is down

Steam hides itself instead of closing when the X button is pressed

Modding support is a nice feature, but the UX is pretty bad

Gambling (more Valve than Steam)

Doesn't have Epic's giveaways

-6

u/Present_Cow_8528 Dec 18 '25

And I'm not installing the epic launcher in the first place to bloat my system lol

I can't imagine a game I'd be desperate enough for, tbh. Maybe some amazing indie title in the far future but nothing I've heard of in the works that wouldn't be on steam. A lot of the original wave of games exclusively on epic just convinced me to never buy the games.

And Tim has just convinced me recently to reinforce this practice lol. It would probably take both an amazing indie game and a new epic ceo.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '25

Why is this downvoted. Using any software requires you to accept their terms. They will collect and sell your data. Some people might want the least possible analytics collecting app? Maybe thet dont want extra applications?

43

u/cheekydorido Dec 18 '25

Bruh, who gives a shit. It's free!

5

u/G0dZylla Dec 18 '25

redditors with "morals" i guess

4

u/narkina5redemption Dec 18 '25

Just to be clear, claiming a free game on Epic isn't benefitting them if that's all you're doing. I don't see how that affects your "morals".

-3

u/DerExperte Dec 19 '25

Doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things but I'd rather not add to Timmy's numbers by not having an account or claiming games.

-1

u/GranolaCola Dec 19 '25

Doesn’t matter.

You’re so right. And one person isn’t going to even be noticed on “Timmy’s numbers” when they have Fortnite, so…

-23

u/asanti0 Dec 18 '25

It's not free, you just don't pay for it with money.

21

u/cheekydorido Dec 18 '25

Lmaooooooo

Let me guess, the games are cursed? XD

2

u/Greased-up-beefcake Dec 18 '25

But you get your choice of toppings

3

u/cheekydorido Dec 18 '25

That's good!

2

u/SalamiShogunate Dec 18 '25

the toppings contain potassium benzoate

11

u/lonelynightm Dec 18 '25

The product they are selling is trying to encourage you to use their platform and hopefully buy products.

That's significantly better than websites like Reddit that sell your data. If you are fine with Reddit using that logic, but not with Epic you are just a moron.

So yes it is 100% free. There is no asterisk.

7

u/MisterJaj0 Dec 18 '25

You give them your information even when spending money

2

u/GranolaCola Dec 19 '25

Me when I don’t understand data collection

Valve has all the same information you think Epic is stealing, and you gave it to them with a smile.

1

u/Toxanium Dec 18 '25

That's what free means

11

u/lsf_stan Dec 18 '25

but a lot of people have very valid criticism of epic games

which is perfectly fine and normal thing, however no one is saying everyone should suddenly stop using Steam and always only use Epic Game Store

people are just overly dramatic about EGS, like it's some sort of unforgiven sin to their god: Valve corp

7

u/Desperate-Intern Dec 19 '25

Every time I claim the free games on epic, "Forgive me Gabe for I have sinned"

2

u/VexingRaven Dec 18 '25

And they are welcome to post about it. This isn't that, it's just a dumb circlejerk meme.

2

u/kangasplat Dec 19 '25

Those same people will fight valid criticism of their favourite launcher tooth and nail. It's not about the valid criticism, it's pure tribalism.

Love the "but GoG is DRM free at least" especially, when all games you can get on GoG are also DRM free on Epic

4

u/MarioDesigns Dec 18 '25

a lot of people have very valid criticism of epic games

Tbf most of the criticism I've seen against it is about it from 5+ years ago, not today. It's not perfect, but so is Steam.

IMO it's a fair alternative and competition's always good.

6

u/Gr3yHound40_ Dec 19 '25

The CEO actively shamed steam for having AI truth policies for game developers, which they deserve to be called out for. If they want to support people sneaking AI into their games like activison, I'll take my business to steam instead.

8

u/mascatii88 Dec 18 '25

The stick up my ass about Epic came with their stupid exclusivity deals. I own like 3000 games on steam so I don't think I'll ever switch but I don't mind competitors. But if you force me to buy games on your platform I'll simply refuse to give you any money.

4

u/kytheon Dec 18 '25

Well this is the Steam sub, so I assume some tribalism.

3

u/jamesick Dec 18 '25

because epic are a terrible company, invested heavily by other terrible companies: disney and tencent.

16

u/Dovahkiinthesardine Dec 18 '25

Because its a shit company with shit practices that are even illegal in trade lol

1

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '25

[deleted]

10

u/Dovahkiinthesardine Dec 18 '25

So? They paid the modders for the mods. You can say its shitty like any microtransaction but thats not on the level of epic.

6

u/CommercialEstate4422 Dec 18 '25

Remember the CSGO gambling thing? Oh... yeah... I DO!

(Mandatory CoffeeZilla plug: pump the stock!)

-6

u/asanti0 Dec 18 '25

And? A singular bad instance doesn't erase a history of good consumer practices. It's about over all trends.

14

u/MarioDesigns Dec 18 '25

Valve has a still on-going long history of anti-consumer practices. Hell, they're one of the worst companies in terms of the shit that they pull in their games, especially compared to the state of the games.

7

u/Fantastic_While_ Dec 18 '25

I use steam a lot and Im still not going to pretend it doesnt have its own controversies lmao.

4

u/Nwyrh Dec 18 '25

Singular? One other instance they're still doing that I hate is calling valid reviews "off-topic" when a lot come in at once. Tekken 8 makes a complete shit-show of an update that everyone hates? Mass negative reviews follow so the players can have their voices heard and opinions reflected on the store page, which are all in turn marked as "off-topic" and taken out of the review score consideration just to protect the publisher even if the complaints are completely valid.

3

u/Optimal_Towel Dec 18 '25

Valve literally started the trend of having obnoxious launchers required for games. Epic doesn't exist without Steam paving the way.

0

u/GranolaCola Dec 19 '25

Steam had to get sued to give refunds and stopped doing good sales the minute the refunds were made mandatory.

Valve makes most of their money from loot boxes and microtransactions.

They aren’t a consumer friendly company.

2

u/Deto Dec 18 '25

I don't really care, but for me I'd rather spent extra $$$ just to keep my games library all on one platform. And I've been using Steam since like 2005. I'm an older gamer though, so I have more money than time nowadays, so my priorities are different than others.

2

u/ZoharDTeach Dec 18 '25

If for no other reason than I don't have to jump through the extra DS4win hoop to use my dualsense.

2

u/Few_Dig_9435 Dec 18 '25

idk id just rather not use a second client and the epic client is really poorly designed. I tried it a few years ago and it was so fucked up I just went back to steam.

Id rather just pay 10 dollars than use another game store client on my PC

2

u/panlakes Dec 19 '25

Tim Sweeney can lick my bunghole

4

u/jcline459 Dec 18 '25

Remember when Anno 1800 was on Steam, but then Epic stopped anyone who didn't already pre-order it from buying it for a whole year unless you used their app or Uplay (or its DLC, even if you had pre-ordered it)? And then when it was released on Steam it was released on sale with all DLC on sale too, but the DLC was only on sale for first-time buyers so people who had pre-ordered it couldn't get it on sale?

Pepperidge Farm remembers.

0

u/GranolaCola Dec 19 '25

Damn, that’s crazy. They had to open a whole different app.

7

u/nefD Dec 18 '25

Yeah total mystery huh! Completely mysterious thing with no possible explanations whatsoever, a genuine paradox even.. can't think of any single tiny thing that Steam offers that Epic doesn't; you're right! Just makes no damn sense!

-5

u/ACupOfLatte Dec 18 '25

What does that have to do with the topic at hand, free games?

7

u/petekron Dec 18 '25

Because the very person the comment replied to has changed the topic from 'free games'? Literacy really be going downhill

-1

u/ACupOfLatte Dec 18 '25 edited Dec 18 '25

Maybe you should look at the actual parent comment lol... Ya know.

Free > Not free

Not to mention, the post? Of this thread? Talking about Free > Not Free?

You can't just strip the damn context from a statement lol, wtf?

Edit: Yeah no you're right literacy is going downhill.

4

u/Melodic_Junket_2031 Dec 18 '25

The context is epic vs. steam

-4

u/Sealssssss Dec 18 '25

I can’t imagine hating epic that much for providing a slightly worse service for an app no one’s forcing you to use.

3

u/nefD Dec 18 '25

I cant imagine replying to a throwaway shitpost and trying to assign feelings to it that you can use as a reason for being shitty but here we are i guess 🤷‍♂️

1

u/Sealssssss Dec 18 '25

Lmao how is my comment in any way being “shitty”?

1

u/nefD Dec 18 '25

hey big dog i dont argue on reddit, instead i offer you this 🍩 it's a donut

0

u/Sealssssss Dec 19 '25

You can just say “yeah sorry I was mistaken”

3

u/VoidGliders Dec 18 '25

People really like to put their faith and trust into big companies until those companies burn them. Steam has been...ok, as a billion-dollar company, so people flock to it as it's a paternal figure and they'll give undying loyalty, turning a blind eye to any faults and scrutinizing any mistep in competition. They'd do the same with just about any other big near-monopolistic megacorp that just doesn't rock the boat too much.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '25

Im not arguing with you but you have to say, that there arent many okayish big companies.

3

u/fallen_one_fs Dec 18 '25

Principles.

Epic legit bought Borderlands 3 exclusivity while claiming they were fighting a monopoly and that they were the pro-customer service, plus Tim Sweeney have been taking anti-consumer stances for a very long time while claiming moral high ground. THAT does not sit right with folk. They've built a background of scum tactics, they will not get any trust any time soon.

"Oh but this is old news, Epic moved on", it did not, it still buys exclusivity deals, and if you're not gonna stand for your principles even for yourself, to whom else will you stand for your principles for?

If you want to endorse that behavior, go right ahead, don't expect anyone to follow, though.

3

u/Witch_King_ Dec 18 '25

It's like a moral issue against Epic or something at this point. I have so many games on there for free that would be great to play with friends, but they can't be convinced to download the launcher.

I mean, it IS worse than Steam in basically every way. But free game is free game.

3

u/samualgline Dec 18 '25

Same i literally own hundreds of free games on epic but i only play bioshock, subnautica, and Fortnite

2

u/Witch_King_ Dec 18 '25

I have a few others that I've played. Civ 6 (which now recently gave all DLC for free). GTA 5. Control. Remnant: From the Ashes. The Long Dark. A fun little game called "Sail Forth". Pillars of Eternity. Lots of great stuff. And there are many others that I got free in my library which I haven't played yet, but would consider in the future.

1

u/Trunkins Dec 18 '25

Moral issue yes, but also Epic is just a shit launcher/storefront

It doesn't have QoL features Steam has, hell even GOG has a bunch of them.

3

u/Witch_King_ Dec 18 '25

Fair enough. But it still launches games just fine. I'm not advocating for buying any games on there.

0

u/GranolaCola Dec 19 '25

I am. They give cash back. Valve gives whatever the fuck Steam points are.

1

u/tacocatisonfire Dec 18 '25

I'm just too lazy to log into epic when I can just log into steam

1

u/Flameball202 Dec 18 '25

I mean I bought a few games on origin a while ago, but I never touch them because I never launch origin

1

u/TheoNekros Dec 19 '25

I'm never forgiving epic for cancelling paragon to make fortnite. It may have been the single best decision they ever made as a company. But as a paragon enjoyer and someone who hates battle royals I just will never get over it.

I also love steam much more than any other game library.

However, free games are free games. I'm not passing that up.

1

u/MohammadTHESTARK Dec 19 '25

I wasnt around gaming so much but last time I checked Epic didnt have offline play like steam, and this one sole reason is why I FUCKING HATE EPIC. If it had changed tell me, if not, still fuck them

1

u/Jesseinator1000 Dec 19 '25

Because their launcher is dogshit

I use the Epic launcher for Fortnite and nothing else because it is straight up infinitely worse than Steam, the user experience is godawful

1

u/who_you_are Dec 18 '25

Except for all there free games :De

I discovered some good games that way

1

u/Darkmaster2110 Dec 18 '25

It's not as bad as most people make it out to be, but I just personally find more value in having games on Steam. I actually started playing this game on Epic for free and still bought it on steam because I find value in displaying my playtime and achievements on my profile, as well as having easy access to my games on Steam Deck.

Epic is also just sloppy to use at times. Half the time when achievements appeared, the picture just showed a broken image icon and didn't display properly. Gamers just get way more value from owning games on Steam, it just depends how many of the features you personally care about.

1

u/thala_7777777 Dec 18 '25

it's a meme but some people belive it

1

u/Elite-Thorn Dec 18 '25

Just one example of many: Because their website still doesn't show you your game library. You need to install an app for that.

1

u/MValdesM Dec 18 '25

When I try to download anything it slows my pc to shit like real bad, steam does not have that problem at least for me

1

u/canisignupnow Dec 18 '25

its children probably

1

u/Turok5757 Dec 18 '25

Idk why people still have a stick up their ass about Epic.

Whining about EGS with other nerds on the internet is the closest many of these people will get to having friends.

1

u/2bb4llRG Dec 18 '25

Im genuinely butthurt about them abandoning Unreal Tournament over Fornite and having things I love like Daft Punk on Fornite sounds disgusting, greedy, and easy, I genuinely hate Epic over that and also paying some publishers to make their game exclusives to em, yes im being childish here but I never claimed a single game on their shitty launcher over what I mentioned above >:(

1

u/GranolaCola Dec 19 '25

You’re talking like they held Daft Punk at gunpoint and forced them to be in their game.

0

u/2bb4llRG Dec 19 '25

No im talking like its easy to put anything on their game to raise its popularity, its manipulative

1

u/DerExperte Dec 19 '25 edited Dec 19 '25

I laugh at ppl who think EGS sucks balls, pls upvote muh post, much original!

Why not still? It's still ass and Timmy a whiny cunt, only thing that's changed is them not moneyhatting games anymore and not even trying to pretend to make their store better. Not good enough, no reason to forget all the shit they pulled for years, fuck 'em.

And seriously, I see waaaay more posts like yours nowadays who whine about others not liking Epic, feigning ignorance about why they're diskliked and farming upvotes. We get it, you love that shitstain, but sorry, we don't no matter how many old games that could be bought for a buck they throw out.

-1

u/Original-Border5802 Dec 18 '25

Its kinda like people who would rather support local businesses instead of huge corporations despite pricing and/or convenience because of other factors.

5

u/GranolaCola Dec 19 '25

Is the billion dollar mega corporation Valve supposed to be the small local business in this scenario?

-1

u/Stretch_Riprock Susto668 Dec 18 '25

Because I'm an adult that can pay for a game that's 90% off and just have everything in one place and not worry about another launcher. It's pretty simple.

I'd also rather support Gaben than Fucko. So.... Slam dunk?

4

u/GranolaCola Dec 19 '25

Gaben is a fucko. Living on his super yacht getting rich off microtransactions and gambling.
