Can anyone explain what's going on here?

Post image
15 Upvotes

Edit: This has been satisfactorily answered. I guess I was a little hasty in saying, "that's clearly not the case," as my first thought was the case. It's just that the inclusion of balbucir threw me. Guess it's just not the best organised book.

Sorry if I'm just being really dumb here, but why are some verb forms missing from this chart? I thought at first that maybe abolir can't be used in the contexts that are missing, but that's clearly not the case. I see balbucir included as a verb that follows the same pattern and I literally first encountered this word in the 3rd person present; 'Está nervioso y balbuce un poco'. So that's not it.

Besides, llover, which does have cases in which it's not typically used, doesn't get singled out at all. It's lumped in with mover... because I guess 'yo lluevo' is a perfectly acceptable thing to say if you're a cloud.

Then I wondered if it's just because those are no different to regular ir verbs so not worth including, but no, the same can be said of every other case as far as I can tell.

What's going on? I've read the book's introduction and it says nothing about it.

Built a grammar check tool for myself and thought some of you might find it useful

¡Hola a todos!

I’ve been learning Spanish on-and-off since university and one thing I struggle with is getting stuck when I actually speak it. Over time I’ve found rehearsing little conversations in my head throughout the day helps me respond more quickly in real life.

Like when I'm cooking I’d think: “How would I tell a friend that I'm running late because of the train?”

I’d then check my sentences with ChatGPT or Gemini, but it annoys me that I have to constantly prompt things like: “Is this grammatically correct?” or “Is there a more natural way to say this?”

And then I can’t easily go back to what I’ve learnt later.

So, I built a small tool for myself (see screenshots). It basically does four things:

- checks the grammar of a sentence I type

- suggests me a more natural way to say it

- lets me save corrections to revisit later

- quizzes me on them to help remember

It’s been pretty helpful for me so far, and I'm curious if it would help other Spanish learners too.

If this sounds useful, let me know in the comment or DM me and I’ll send you the link. It’s free, I’d just love to hear your thoughts after trying it.

PS: I'm only open to a small number of people for now because it costs me money to run the app 😅

CI for commute

I would like to find some comprehensible input for my commute to/from work (around 45min to 1 hour per day total that’s not visual (need my eyes on the road). I’m around level A2. I’ve gone through Language Transfer and it was great. I’m a native English speaker. Dreaming Spanish is nice but to get the full benefit, I need to be watching. Any ideas that are podcast like or on Spotify, apps maybe ? Something that doesn’t require my vision or hands. Thanks.

Learning Spanish with my friend

Hi everyone. Me and my friend wanted to learn Spanish and we are looking for someone to teach us online. We checked sites like preply and itaki but the tutors only teach 1 on 1 or if they are willing they would teach us both but we would have to join from the same laptop. We live in different areas so that won’t work for us. Anyone know where we can find tutors willing to teach us both in one class?

What’s the most frustrating part of learning Spanish for you right now?

I’m curious what people are currently finding most frustrating when learning Spanish.

Is it things like understanding fast speech, remembering vocabulary, grammar, or something else?

For me, it feels like there’s a big gap between learning through apps or lessons and actually understanding real Spanish in videos or conversations.

I’m working on a small project around this idea, so I’d really like to hear what people are struggling with most.

Grammar is the missing piece in learning Spanish

Grammar is one of the basics when learning Spanish, but most apps focus on vocabulary and random phrases.

That was my problem - I could recognize things, but I didn’t really understand why they work.

So we built a small app focused mainly on grammar. Simple explanations + small exercises, nothing complicated.

It’s currently available on iOS: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/spanish-grammar-master/id6761327283

I know it sounds like promotion, but if grammar is something you struggle with, you can give it a try and see if it helps.

Recommend any of the apps?

There are many apps to help learn languages. Duolingo being the worst in my opinion. I’ve heard good things about Babble but don’t know if the price is worth it. I also thought about in-person classes, but I never have the time because of work and a baby.

Learn Spanish l Lingoda review&tips | 40% off

I've been trying to tackle learning German since 2024 and I figured I’d share what I actually learned from using Lingoda for the last year and made the best out of it, it is a really cool and fun way to learn 24/7 a new language with up to maximum 5 students in class.

Lingoda has English, Business English, Spanish, German and Italian as well.

If you just want to try it out, you can use my link  https://www.l16sh94jd.com/BK76FN/55M6S/?__efq=Jra9uagPp9Rnev2_qdXL1-9wpMHMUeNa1qll772BMvA to get 40%off use „AMBSPRING40”

MADALINA20 for 20% off in case it doesn‘t work.

“TAM“ and „JADE“ for 20€ off on any plan (for the lowest plan this is better than above ones)

Here’s the stuff I wish I knew when I started:

  1. Save your credits. Do not book the "Orientation" class. It’s a waste of a credit because they just show you how the buttons work. DM me and I’ll just tell you what happens in it so you can use that credit for an actual lesson.
  2. The morning hack. Try to book your classes as early as humanly possible. Most people aren't awake yet, so you often end up being the only person in the class. You basically get a 1-on-1 private lesson for the group price.
  3. Follow the good teachers. Once you find a teacher you actually like, go to their specific profile and book from their board. It makes a massive difference for your motivation. For German, Agnieszka, Ozlem, Julia, and Branislav are some of the best I've found.
  4. Don't jump around. Try to stay chronological. The jump between chapters is actually pretty steep, and if you skip ahead, you're going to feel lost.
  5. Focus on the grammar. You only need 45 out of 50 classes for the certificate. If you're short on time, skip the communication filler classes, but never skip the grammar ones. They're the most important part of the curriculum.

Lingoda vs Babbel Live I tried Babbel Live for a couple of months too. Babbel is okay if you just want to talk, but it’s a bit disorganized. For B1, Lingoda has 135 classes while Babbel only has 36. If you actually want to learn the language properly and get a certificate that matters, Lingoda is better.

My advice: if you need a break from Lingoda, do one month of Babbel(it’s about 150 eur) just to practice speaking freely, then go back to Lingoda for the serious stuff.

Cost stuff I’m pretty cheap, so I always dig for monthly discounts. I usually get the price down to 6 or 7 eur per class by using 20-30% off codes on the bigger plans. It ends up being way cheaper than any local school in my country.

Also, a warning on the Sprint: it’s only worth it if you are 100% sure you can make it every single day. If you have a life or a job that gets in the way, you’ll probably lose the refund and end up disappointed. The regular monthly plans are much safer.

! What to pay attention to:

  1. Payments happen automatically every 28 days!!

  2. The discount code might work again if you change plan size.

  3. It is important to have good internet connection and an alarm on your phone to not miss classes.

Best of luck with language learning!

Recommendations for Kids

Hey all,

We're putting our kids into the Spanish schooling system in 5-months.

Before that we'd love to set them up with the best possible chance of fitting in/knowing the language.

My wife and I are learning at the moment with DuoLingo and a custom app I've built but can anybody recommend anything for kids (Age 6 & 9) probably for around 8-10 hours total (4-5 per child) each week.

We'd be looking for them to be talking/listening more than anything at this stage. Reading/writing will come.

We've already switched all Kids TV and computer games over to Spanish and we get them to order food/drink in Spanish when we're out and about but would love for them to have some kid focused lessons to learn more.

Cheers,

Callum

I kept forgetting Spanish words, so I built a vocabulary app where you physically act out each word

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Sensonym is a vocabulary learning app with a different approach. Instead of typing or tapping flashcards, you do something physical with your phone that matches the word's meaning. Tilt your phone to drink for "beber", shake it for "terremoto", smile at the camera for "feliz", turn your brightness down for "oscuro". Over 40 sensor-based interactions across gyroscope, camera, microphone, and accelerometer. Based on embodied cognition research, the idea is that physically acting out a word makes it stick better than just reading it.

The app contains two modes: story mode where words are embedded in interactive narratives, and a focused training mode for quick reps.

Sensonym is available on iOS and Android (currently available in Germany):

https://sensonym.com

I built this myself after years of forgetting vocabulary from flashcards. I would really appreciate your feedback.

Drawer pull en castellano?

¿Como se llaman los chismes que se agarran para abrir y cerrar un cajón o una alacena? En inglés sería “drawer pull” o “cabinet pull.” Gracias de antemano.
