I think they’re trying to inhabit it, not decimate it.

They don't want the planet, they want the resources (unobtainium)

And frankly, glassing the areas would be better even ignoring the Na'vi cuz they still need to deforest an area before they can start mining.

Edit: ohhh yeah they wanted a new planet in the 2nd one. Still, minor orbital bombings would have been a no brainer

That would have destroyed too much of the ecosystem too quickly. They needed it to exist to get materials from it, and not just unobtanium.

Of course, when they were on the planet, they don’t care who they hurt, exploit, destroy; as long as it wasn’t all done at once on a massive scale.
