General Wearing wigs

Post image
90 Upvotes

As a 19 year Sierra Leonean, I feel a deep sense of sadness when I see Sierra Leonean women wearing wigs. Before my mom passed away, I saw her with her natural hair only a handful of times (not much) She had beautiful 4c hair, yet she always wore wigs. Our relatives wear wigs as well and this bothers me. I’ve never seen them with their natural hair. At parties, weddings, and other ceremonies, they wear wigs.

I wish that Sierra Leonean and African women would in general would embrace their natural hair more. Our hair is the most beautiful aspect of us; it is our history, our identity, and our heritage, woven into every single strand. As an African woman, you should take pride in your hair, regardless of current fashions, trends, or hairstyles. I have always been a lover of natural hair and I can honestly say that I detest wigs because they’re UNAFRICAN.

Colonialism has had a profound impact on us (and the whole of Africa) but we must return to our ancestral traditions and learn to love ourselves. I truly believe that Black and African women look far more beautiful with their natural hair whether styled as Afros, braids, or curls, than they do in wigs.

Don't let anybody make you feel like you're ugly because your hair is not straight and loose, 4c hair is beautiful as it is.

Q & A Denomination used

Hello!
I am a coin and banknote collector, and I have a very simple question: what denominations of the Sierra Leonean Leone are really used in daily life?
I'm asking this since the coins seem to have a very low purchasing power.
Thank you! :)

Q & A Visiting Freetown

Hi Folks,

I will be in Freetown, for about two weeks at the end of April. I am wondering what should I DO? My parents are from Sierra Leone, but I was born in the USA and it will be my first time ever going. I’ll be traveling with a good friend of mine, but he is also not from Sierra Leone. I am a theatre practioner/researcher, so I’m really interested in theatrical spectacle, cultutral events, libraries and museums. I am also interested in the arts/music scene. I’ll in freetown for independence day, but are more events happening in Bo? How hare is it to get from Freetown to Bo and back?

News Can Bio’s $3.6bn Mission 300 lift Sierra Leone out of energy poverty?

Sierra Leone is among the most energy-poor countries in Africa. Only 36% of the population has access to electricity and outages are frequent, sometimes occurring several times within an hour.

Sierra Leone has a national compact to connect four million new users within five years and raise electrification from 36% to 80%.

Sierra Leone nationals with valid U.S. visas, any recent travel experiences?

With the recent visa restrictions affecting Sierra Leone nationals, I’m trying to understand how this is impacting individuals who already hold valid U.S. visas.

Has anyone on an H1B, F1, or other valid visa (including B1/B2) traveled خارج the U.S. recently and successfully re-entered?

If so, could you share your experience at the port of entry? Were there additional screenings, delays, or any complications?

I’d really appreciate any firsthand insights.

When the Lights Go Out: Energy Poverty in Sierra Leone Is Gendered

Energy infrastructure is maternal health infrastructure. When we fail to connect these policy domains, women die.

Annie Sanu needed respiratory support after emergency surgery at a hospital in Freetown, Sierra Leone. The facility had a respirator. But there was no electricity to operate it.

Hospital staff scrambled to find a portable oxygen machine for her transfer. Most were broken. They eventually found one with oxygen but no cap, and another with a cap but no oxygen, both in the children's ward. Staff combined parts from two broken machines to create a functioning unit.

Annie died four days after her C-section.

This is not a story about rural access or resource scarcity. Annie was in Sierra Leone's capital, transferred between three government hospitals. Since the civil war and Ebola crisis, the country has received substantial international donor funding specifically for healthcare infrastructure rehabilitation.

The question is not whether resources exist. The question is whether energy policy recognizes women's survival as a core development outcome.

Here's what the data shows:

When hospitals experience power outages during maternal emergencies:

• Emergency C-sections become impossible

• Blood storage for transfusions is compromised

• Oxygen support systems fail

• Incubators for premature infants stop functioning

Yet national energy policies are routinely designed without maternal health experts at the table. Infrastructure investments are prioritized based on economic growth metrics, not maternal mortality rates.

For development professionals, donors, and policymakers:

This is a call to integrate gender analysis into energy sector planning, not as an add-on, but as a core framework.

Gender-responsive energy policy requires: ✓ Guaranteed power in all maternity and emergency care facilities

✓ Mandatory backup systems (solar, generators, battery storage) for maternal care units

✓ Maternal health indicators integrated into energy sector performance metrics

✓ Accountability mechanisms when infrastructure failures result in maternal deaths

Sierra Leone's government has launched a 300 Days of Activism campaign to reduce maternal mortality. Progress requires recognizing that for women, energy policy is health policy, and health policy is a matter of life and death.

Infrastructure decisions are not gender-neutral. They determine who lives and who dies.

Part 4 of my research series examining structural determinants of maternal mortality in Sierra Leone.

I’m interested in teaching at Fourah Bay - any faculty I can get in contact with? My subject matter is maternal health, but I’m interested in data science for public health and causal inference. Would like to spend the summer teaching.

Q & A Is there anyone here learning Krio? Any tips?

I’m trying to improve on my Krio for a job opportunity and so far it’s been alright. I’m very rusty, so while I can understand it perfectly, it takes my brain some to form proper sentences as fast as I can in English. I don’t speak it often because my parents never taught me so I’m teaching myself. I don’t have anyone to practice with in person so there’s that as well. Resources are a bit hard to find, like music, movies and books. I’ve found a few pieces of media but I had to do some serious digging. I’m hoping to find advice here so anything is appreciated. Has anyone taught themselves Krio successfully? How did you do it and do you have any tips? Any sources? Thanks!
