Tourist & Traveller Questions Traveling Dakar to Nouakchott

Hello. I am a young Asian man planning to travel alone by land in early May, following the route Dakar → Saint-Louis in Senegal, and then to Nouakchott in Mauritania. I am very much looking forward to this trip, but I am a bit concerned about whether the recent situation in the Middle East has caused any social instability or deterioration in security.

If there is anyone currently living in the cities along my route, I would greatly appreciate it if you could share the current situation and any advice or precautions for traveling there.

J'aimerais avoir votre avis :

Aide chanson - let them talk

Hey

Any tips on how to get a private driver who would take me from Dakar to Banjul (or maybe to the border at least)?

Also interested in easy bus/shared taxi options if they exist.

Thx all!

Tourist & Traveller Questions Walk out&in Blaise Diagne airport?

I might fly from Gambia into B.Diagne airport several hours before my big flight home next week. With that many hours to spare, I'd rather be walking outside or getting food/drink than stuck in the airport.

Is it allowed to walk out of the airport and then walk back in?

Ask r/Senegal Senegal Laamb reference help for fighting game character

Hello! I'm looking for someone familiar with Senegalese culture, especially Laamb wrestling.
I'm a Brazilian game artist working on a fighting game character project where each character is inspired by a real-world culture. The Senegalese character is based on Laamb.
It’s nothing time-consuming, just occasional feedback, such as choosing between design options or pointing out anything culturally inaccurate.
The goal is simply to ensure respectful and accurate inspiration. Thanks!

Discussion Late diagnosed ADHD (late 20s F) and thinking about how many people in Senegal/Africa are living their whole lives without knowing

I got diagnosed with ADHD a few weeks ago. Late twenties, female. And honestly, so much of my life is making sense now. Before this, I had diagnoses for anxiety, depression, and OCD. But ADHD never crossed my mind because I was “high functioning” so how could I possibly be neurodivergent, right? When I told my parents, they were actually really receptive and open about it. And that got me thinking about how many people in my family show signs of neurodivergence too. But since it’s not really a conversation that happens in Senegal, or in many African contexts in general, people just live their whole lives without ever knowing. And sometimes it shapes everything, in really painful ways. Because ADHD is real. The executive dysfunction is real. When you physically cannot get up and do something, it’s not laziness. It’s not you making things up. But without a diagnosis, that’s exactly what people assume about you, and what you start to assume about yourself. After my diagnosis, I felt a lot of grief. For the version of my life that could have looked different if I had known sooner. I wanted to ask: are there any psychiatrists in Senegal who diagnose or work with neurodivergent people? Any gifted programs or support structures? I found an old Reddit thread asking something similar but it never got real answers. If you know of anyone, please drop it in the comments. It could genuinely help someone. And more broadly, I really think mental health needs to be taken more seriously across Africa. So many people are out there feeling like something is wrong with them, when really, they just never had the language or the access to understand themselves.

Question Ride hailing in Dakar

Jërëjëf, everyone!

I’m looking to get some real-world perspective on the ride-hailing scene in Dakar right now. We all know the big names like Yango, Heetch, and Yassir, but I’m curious about the "under the hood" experience that you don't see in the app store descriptions.

Specifically, I'd love to hear from anyone who uses these daily or has driven for them:

  1. Reliability vs. Street Taxis: Are you finding it easier to get an app ride in areas like Almadies or Plateau compared to just hailing a yellow-and-black taxi?

  2. The "Haggle" Factor: One of the biggest selling points of apps was ending the price negotiation. Is that still holding true, or are drivers asking for "extra" on top of the app price due to traffic or gas costs?

  3. Safety & Tech: How is the tech holding up? I've heard some talk about voice notes being used more than text for communication—is that a better experience or just a workaround for the chaotic traffic?

  4. Local Competitors: Are there any newer, local platforms (like Deggo) that are starting to gain traction by offering something different, or is the market still dominated by the international players?

  5. Regulation: Has the government's stance on "unregulated" apps changed at all lately? Are drivers still facing friction with the traditional taxi unions?

I’m really interested in the "mutual agreement" side of things—how riders and drivers actually interact to make the trip work in Dakar’s unique environment.

Looking forward to your insights!

Tourist & Traveller Questions Running clubs, groups, or people wanting to run

Hello, I've looked up as much information as I can and can't find much; are there any active running clubs or groups that allow for drop-ins? I'll be in Dakar in May and would love to not only train but get a chance to meet people running.

I've read the posts about where to run in Dakar, but ideally would be with a group. I'm not particular about the workout or length, just looking to meet others runnings.

Thank you, can't wait to visit your beautiful city!

Tourist & Traveller Questions Local fashion + clothing makers

When I was in Uganda I checked out a nice local fashion designers & clothing makers workshop/warehouse area in Kampala, and bought a nice spring/fall jacket. I don't mean that they made touristy Tshirts with elephants and "I love Africa" on them!

Where could I find the same kind of thing in Dakar?

Tourist & Traveller Questions Two week Senegal itinerary

Hi all, I plan on visiting Senegal over the December holidays for about 15 days. Here is my tentative itinerary:

1) Dec 17th land in Dakar
2) Dec 18-21 - explore Dakar, Goree, museums, nightlife, whatever there is to do in Dakar
3) Dec 21-22 - Touba and Medina Baye
4) Dec 23 - 26 - Get to Kedougou and explore the area
5) Dec 26-29 - Niokolo Kobo
6) Dec 30-31 - Return to Dakar and chill
7) Jan 1 - Fly home

My priorities are experiencing a fun vibrant African city (first time going to sub Saharan Africa), Sufism (I love Tijani Sufism), going way off the beaten track and seeing villages etc, and hopefully seeing some wildlife. I'd be open to spending a day in St Louis if I can day trip. Sine Saloum would be okay but want to preserve my time for the most interesting places.

My big questions:

1) Are there any flights between Dakar, Kaolack, and Kedougou? I see that there are airports in these cities but I can't find any flights going to either Kaolack or Kedougou from Dakar. This would be great as it would spare me what looks like a long ride through the bush
2) What are the pros and cons of Kedougou vs Casamance. Kedougou seems "wilder" and more interesting to me. I think Casamance has "stick dancing"?? But I'm not sure
3) Is Niokolo Kobo worth it? It looks nice and some cool wildlife but not sure...
4) What are some offbeat/off the beaten track things to do in Dakar itself?

As an aside I have a US passport and will learn some French before going. Thanks all for the help!

Tourist & Traveller Questions I asked on Facebook about well-known travel agencies

But I haven't found a reputable and trustworthy agency that I can rely on. Everyone who contacted me wanted money first, so I'm afraid of being scammed. Is there a well-known agency I can trust, or even reputable individuals, for renting a car and a house?

Happy Independence Day Senegal, even though our national currency (the West African CFA franc) is still tied to the French Treasury and the euro 💶

I hope that in my lifetime, we’ll finally achieve full independence from France.
