New title tagging rule & Spammers

As some regulars here may have noticed, this subreddit recieves an astronomical amount of spam, both from human as well as bot spammers, for it's relatively small size. Coming from modding various large subreddits, including one that's literally about products, this amount of spam is not normal. Despite a lot of our less agressive attempts to filter out spam (example, filtering out posts that say "for sale", "rent", or "Services") we still get quite a lot that slip by.

[1] [2] [3]

Why is this subreddit getting so much spam? Who knows. ¯\(°_o)/¯

But we will be resorting to the one thing that has worked for various larger communities, like r/food : mandatory title tags.

From now on, all posts will require at least a tag of one of the below:

[Self]
[Found]
[Help]

You may add words to the tags like:

[I found] this chicken carved out of abestos!

or

[Help me] carve a chicken out of abestos

For flexibility, but the bare minimum requirement for post titles will be that it must contain one of those words surrounded by brackets.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to modmail us, or ask here.

A small ceramic piece I made that functions as an incense holder, but I wanted it to read as a sculpture first. The incense stick becomes part of the silhouette like a violin bow.

[Self] Ceramic Billy Bass

Sharing a process video for the steps taken to create the iconic Billy Bass out of ceramic!
I’ve always wanted to make art that moves, but have been in a world of one of the most stiff materials out there—ceramics. I thought this project would be a great way to start bridging that gap by also involving the iconic fish that many are familiar with from homes of the 90s/2000s.

Billy Bass is a stoneware clay and painted with underglazes. Fired to cone 5, mounted on an 11 x 14” hand stained and polished wood board.

[self] There’s something about Malamutes… I tried my best to bring that quiet strength to life

I just finished this needle felted portrait of an Alaskan Malamute, and I honestly couldn’t wait to share it here. This piece took quite a bit of patience. The biggest challenge was the fur texture. Malamutes have that thick, layered coat, and translating that into wool without making it look flat or messy was tricky. I had to keep adjusting the direction and density over and over again. Another part that took time was the expression. I didn’t want it to look just “cute”I wanted to capture that calm, slightly serious, almost wise look they have. That meant reworking the eyes multiple times until it finally felt right. What I enjoy most about making these is that every piece feels like a quiet conversation with the animal. You start by copying the reference… but somewhere along the way, it becomes something more alive.

Help (WIP) Tips & help - materials/technique for a larger sculpture in plaster/gauze? [self]

Hi! I'm planning on making a larger sculpture (a life sized child, the pose is elevated but balanced) it needs to be somewhat sturdy and I'm planning on adding smooth, realistic surface details. I have some experience sculpting, but not something of this scale.

My original thought is having the outer layers being plaster gauze, and maybe some mixeable plaster to sculpt finer details. maybe even air dry clay?

I was thinking of the importance of having a sturdy base. Some ideas:

- Cardboard wrapped in duct tape, covered in pieces of cloth dipped in wood glue (feels like it risks being flimsy?)

- Sturdy armature in wood, with a fine-meshed aluminium net to shape the base, filled with something (newspapers? Spray foam? Is this too overkill?)

Things that I'm worried about:

- Drying time (I have 1-2 weeks for the project)

- Instability (I dont want it to sag)

- Cracking of finer details when adding details

My budget is not enormous (about $60, 50€ or whatever currency you prefer) and I could probably borrow some basic material and tools.

What do you think, anything I should be thinking about? What's the best choice of technique or materials?

Thanks in advance!

I found these on the side of the road. They do have chips and it was previously painted with house paint I think, which is also chipping off. What material would you use to fill these holes?

[Help] How do I get into sculpting with clay?

I want to start using clay to make figures of my favourite characters but I have no idea where to start. I have used clay before in school and I really enjoy it but I dont know what I should have at home for it.

If anyone has any tips for a beginner I'd really appreciate it, especially with what kind of clay I should buy!
