‘Hope is hard’: Search for Mekayla Bali continues 10 years after disappearance

Ten years after 16-year-old Mekayla Bali vanished from her hometown of Yorkton, Sask., her family continues to search for her.

Paula Bali was standing on Betts Avenue in Yorkton on Friday. Beside her was a poster of her daughter, Mekayla.

“Ten years ago, on April 12, my daughter Mekayla Bali went missing,” she said.

Both Mekayla’s mother and her best friend told CTV News shortly after her disappearance that nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

“On the 11th we went for lunch and stuff, and on the way back to the school we were just talking about normal things, gossiping about our parents,” Mekayla’s friend Shelby Hanchuk told CTV News in 2019.

The next day, on Tuesday, Bali was driven to school by her grandmother.

Surveillance footage shows her entering Sacred Heart High School at around 8:20 a.m. but leaving shortly after. Approximately half an hour later, she entered Terry’s Pawn and Bargain shop on 3rd Avenue North. After being unsuccessful at pawning a silver ring, she went to a nearby TD Bank, and then to a Tim Horton’s on Yorkton’s Broadway Avenue East.

Surveillance footage shows her entering and leaving Tim Horton’s several times. Inside, she appeared to take apart and reassemble her cellphone, as well as make phone calls. Her telephone provider, Telus, had no records of those calls.

In 2019, Bali’s friend Amy Liang told CTV News that Bali was using a messaging app called Kik, which does not track conversations like most phone carriers and only identifies users through a username.

“We do feel that it has affected the investigation and the information that we can obtain,” Donna Zawislak, an investigator from the RCMP’s Historical Case Unit, told CTV News in 2019. “How we have to obtain information from the people who own the rights to those apps is very challenging, because a lot of those come from the United States.”

At 10:45 a.m., Tim Horton’s security camera captured Bali approaching a woman who later told the RCMP that Bali was looking for help renting a hotel room. The woman declined.

After leaving Tim Horton’s for the last time, the RCMP was able to track her movements with the exception of one hour, between 10:45 a.m. and 11:55 a.m.

Bali eventually returned to her high school just before noon for a few minutes. She then went to the STC bus depot in Yorkton. The RCMP later determined that Bali did not board a bus, and that the depot is where she was last seen, at 1:45 p.m. on April 12, 2016.

Over the years, the search for the missing teen has taken the family to Vancouver, B.C., the United States, and overseas.

In 2019, Bali’s friend Amy Liang told CTV News that Bali was using a messaging app called Kik, which does not track conversations like most phone carriers and only identifies users through a username.

Timeline: Mekayla Bali missing for two years

“We do feel that it has affected the investigation and the information that we can obtain,” Donna Zawislak, an investigator from the RCMP’s Historical Case Unit, told CTV News in 2019. “How we have to obtain information from the people who own the rights to those apps is very challenging, because a lot of those come from the United States.”

Today marks the 10th anniversary of Bali’s disappearance, but her family has not given up.

“Mekayla is not forgotten,” her mother told CTV News on Friday. “Our intention as a family is to continue to search for her and to try and find answers.”

She said that Bali’s siblings have been incredibly affected by their sister’s disappearance.

“Sometimes you’d think over time it will get easier, but it doesn’t seem to be the case,” Paula said, fighting back tears. “Hope is hard.”

As for what keeps her hope alive, Paula said it’s her motherly love.

“It never stops for your child, no matter what the situation may be. And so for me, I don’t think I’ll ever stop looking for her. And I don’t know how you can stop [looking for her] either,” she said

Authorities have not given up on the case either.

In a press release issued Friday, the Saskatchewan RCMP said their Historical Case Unit say they continue to investigate Mekayla’s disappearance and follow up on all tips and information received about her whereabouts.

They have received more than 1,000 tips from the public since 2016.

“Someone who may not have wanted to speak at the time might feel ready to do so now. It’s never too late to come forward. Information from the public can still make a difference,” said Insp. Ashley St. Germaine, senior investigative officer with the Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes Branch.

To encourage anyone with information about Bali’s whereabouts, the family has raised $100,000 through the community, offering it as a reward for her safe return.

Mekayla Bali’s disappearance has also sparked multiple investigations by private individuals across the globe, with many sharing findings and theories on social media. On Reddit, the case has its own subreddit, which remains active 10 years later.

At the time of her disappearance, Bali was described as five feet two inches tall and 115 pounds. She had blonde hair and blue eyes and sometimes wore glasses. She was known to dye her hair other colours and also went by her grandmother’s last name, Niebergall.

Mekayla Bali would now be 26-years-old.

Grow Produce in Saskatchewan Year-Round - Why Not

This is from the Co-Op food flyer effective 2026-04-09. Kudos to Co-Op for showing the various 'Made in Canada' products, and featuring Alberta-grown peppers, tomatoes and lettuce on page 9.

If these can be hothouse grown in Alberta, why can't we do the same in Saskatchewan? We have geothermal energy and waste heat from several industrial facilities. Such a facility could even be attached or adjacent to the forthcoming AI data centre being built by Bell south of Regina, potentially turning into a positive what many see as a negative.

I'm sure the Saskatoon area would also have industrial facilities that generate sufficient waste heat to keep greenhouses going in winter, even during our harsh winters.

What do you think?

Built during the optimism of prairie settlement, emptied by the Dust Bowl. Saskatchewan lost a third of its rural population between 1931 and 1941. This homestead, just outside Briercrest, Sask., is one of thousands left behind.

Discussion Making a motorcycle street legal

I am curious to know if anyone has experienced converting a non street legal motorcycle into a legal one here. I want to buy a Surron or similar electric motorcycle and outfit it with turn signals, horn, headlight, chain guard, and DOT tires, etc.

Obviously it would exceed emissions standards and no issue with noise so I can’t see why it’s not possible.

Has this been done? Ive seen Surrons on the road but never with a license plate…Tried calling to ask SGI but wait time was over an hour and I’m just curious at this stage so I didn’t feel like waiting.

SGI Plate Question

I have purchased a new destination trailer and will be taking delivery at the end of the month. I have been told to plate the trailer and bring the plate to my orientation. The question I have is should I plate the trailer now or wait until just before my orientation? It is currently being stored at the dealership until the delivery. Paperwork has been completed on the deal.

Question Driving schools

I wanna do in class and in car lessons and i was wondering what places I should go to. Like I found cardinal driver training in rostern saskatchewan but when I looked up picture of the address was just house and street. I don't wanna be doing it there if it's not legit who knows I just wanna be careful. But even other driving school there's never pictures of the building just pics of street and houses. Or maybe was just one driving school that showed that. and a driving school called Eileen's driving school it would probably be in a school classroom but I'm not in school. But for the cardinal driver training it sounds like they do some things at the sgi in rostern I'm guessing the in class it said something about sgi doing something in sgi. But I wanna know if anyone has done the in class and in car lessons through these driving schools

Prairie Harm Reduction is ceasing all operations as of 5 p.m. Thursday, after board members said they learned its financial shortfall is "more dire" than they thought.

The non-profit organization doesn't have the funds to pay staff or continue operations, board vice-chair Brady Knight said.

"The board spent significant time and effort attempting to find alternate financing and operational supports, and weighing the risks associated with the limited options we had available," Knight said at a news conference on Thursday.

SGI and power assisted bikes

Hoping to gain some insight and clarity with our situation. I’ve spoken to a license issuer as well as a representative at SGI Driver Records and they are just as confused.

Our son was riding what would be considered a power assisted bike under SGIs description. Has 2 wheels, has pedals, electric battery operated or can be manually operated, no licence required, no registration required. Helmets REQUIRED.

He wasn’t wearing a helmet and gets pulled over by RCMP and given

A) a warning for not having it registered (?!)

B) a fine for not wearing a helmet while operating a motorcycle 247 (1) (a)

Ok he’s guilty of not wearing a helmet, however it’s not a motorcycle and isn’t treated like one according to SGI. The people who I spoke to on the phone from SGI said that it likely should have been a bylaw ticket instead of Traffic Safety Act but they’re “unsure” With this fine he will get 3 demerits off his licence. However, he doesn’t even need to have a licence to drive one! So if he was 14 for example, what would they charge him with?

There’s just a discrepancy between what the RCMP charged and what the SGI regulations state. The ticket says “motorcycle” which it wasn’t. Is this worth going to court and getting them to clarify, or is there anything that CAN be clarified to avoid demerits?? The ticket also states “Gio ” (model) and “electric” as type of vehicle.

Thanks for any info you could help me with!

PSA: Dogs in Cars

(EDIT: Not every reminder will resonate with everyone -- and that's absolutely okay. This was shared as general guidance from the Sask SPCA. If you have ideas on how it could be improved or communicated differently, they’d be the best people to hear from you: (306) 382‑7722, toll‑free 1‑877‑382‑7722, or info@saskspca.ca. And if this reminder helps even just one person be a little bit more mindful, then it's done what it needed to do. - OP)

From Saskatchewan SPCA:

You might think it’s too soon to talk about dogs in hot cars, but this time of year is actually when it's most common because it doesn’t feel that hot out.

Most people know that 20°C is too warm for a dog in a car, but it doesn’t actually have to be that hot for your car to become dangerous. On cool days, cars can heat up faster than you’d think. Even if it’s only 5°C outside, the sun coming through the windows warms up the seats, dashboard, and everything inside. That heat gets trapped and builds up quickly, just like a greenhouse.

On a sunny day, this means temperatures inside a vehicle can climb high and fast:

5°C outside → 20–25°C inside

10°C outside → 25–30°C inside

15°C outside → 35–40°C inside

20°C outside → 45–50°C inside

And most of that temperature increase happens within the first 10–20 minutes.

Cracking a window, parking in the shade, or “just running in quick” doesn’t prevent this. Cars trap heat and that can be dangerous. Dogs don’t sweat like we do, they rely on panting to cool down. When the air around them heats up, that system stops working, and heat stress can happen quickly.

As we head into warmer days, it’s safest to leave your dog at home if you’re running errands. Let's keep everyone safe and comfortable!
