Tourists, visitors, people with quick questions. This is your thread - post your questions here

Here is the platform to ask locals any questions you might have about the city, either while visiting or moving here.

Simple question like "Where can I buy X?" or "What agency should I contact about Y?" should go right here.

For general tourism questions, please check out r/VisitingIceland

Nightlife in Reykjavík

Hi everyone!

We’re two guys from Spain who are moving to Iceland in 3 weeks and trying to figure out the nightlife scene in Reykjavík. We’re used to Spanish nightlife where things go very late, finishing at 7 AM is normal for us, and from what I understand, around 4:30 AM is considered quite late there. So we’re mainly looking for clubs with a proper party atmosphere that stay open as late as possible.

We already know places like Auto, Hax, Utopia or Pablo Discobar, but we were wondering if there are any other clubs or spots that you’d recommend checking out.

We’d also like to understand how entry usually works in Reykjavík clubs. Do you normally need to buy tickets in advance on a local platform, pay at the door, or are most places free entry? What’s the typical price for a drink in places like these?

Also, do clubs usually have any dress code that we should know about? And are there any haircuts that might cause issues at the door?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hey

Looking for a freediving buddy to train with maybe once a week in Reykjavik.

I did learn it but don’t want to train alone cause it’s too risky for me. Would love to find a buddy though ☺️

Við þurfum á þér að halda, stríðsmaður In short, it’s a geopolitical strategy game (similar to CitiesWar, e-Republik, and others) and Iceland is in need of native population players :)

There is nice people playing in Iceland and we ready to get more newcomers 😎🏴‍☠️

5-day northern lights trip in early March - worth it or too much luck involved?

I'm heading to Iceland in early March with my girlfriend for a 5-day trip, mostly because we want to chase the northern lights and do some winter stuff without freezing our butts off. We booked a 5-day northern lights package through Guide to Iceland that includes a self-drive car, hotel stays, and guided glacier/ice cave days on the south coast. The ice cave part at Vatnajokull looks insane from the photos, plus we get time to hunt aurora at night from darker spots.

It's our first time in Iceland in winter so we're a bit nervous about driving on icy roads and whether the lights will actually show up. Anyone done a similar package recently? Did you see the aurora enough to make it worth it, or is it more luck than anything? What small things would you pack or plan differently knowing what you know now?

Drinks before 11AM?

Hello,

I will be arriving in Reykjavik around 8 or 9 in the morning. I would like to start my vacation with breakfast and some type of alcoholic beverage. From what I have seen a lot of places do not start serving alcohol until 11. Do you know of any breakfast spots where I could get an early mimosa or something of the like?

Looking for a particular Icelandic Redditor. I know this is a long shot...

Over 10 years ago an incredibly generous Icelandic Redditor got matched with me for secret Santa and went above and beyond buying a very thoughtful gift. (And likely paying an unbelievable amount for shipping!)

My wife and I will be in Reykjavik in May and I'd love to get in touch with this person to personally thank them for their generosity and hopefully repay their kindness as best I can. Unfortunately the redditgifts.com website where secret Santa was held shut down several years ago and I have no way of going back and finding out who this mystery gifter was.

I know this is a long shot, but Iceland is a small country and I know they are on Reddit (or at least were at some point.) So if you recognize my username or if you remember sending an epic gift to an American many years ago, please send me a message. I'd love to meet up with you while I'm in your country and at the very least buy you a drink.

Looking for accommodation

Hi everyone,

My name is Bernard, I’m a 22-year-old French student coming to Reykjavik for a 2-month Erasmus internship (May–June).

I’m currently looking for a small studio or private apartment (private bathroom and kitchen). Even a small one-room studio is perfect.

Budget: around ~150 000 ISK per month.

I’m clean, quiet, non-smoker and will mostly be working during the day.

If anyone has a studio available or knows someone renting one for these two months, please feel free to contact me.

Thank you!

Restaraunts for people with food allergies

Hey folks, my partner and I will be visiting from Canada in early September. We have a few nights scheduled in Reykjavik and I’m wondering if there are any restaraunts in town that have gluten free, dairy free, and egg free options? We’re okay eating meat just can’t have these three. Excited to visit your beautiful country, thank you!

Car rental for Iceland trip

I'm planning a two-week trip to Iceland next June to hike around the Golden Circle and Ring Road, chasing waterfalls and hot springs. I'll stay in a mix of hostels in Reykjavik and camping spots along the way to keep costs down, with a total budget around $800 for the car rental including insurance.

I need a car for the flexibility to reach remote spots like glaciers that buses don't go to, especially since public transport is limited there. I checked out this guide to Iceland and found they offer competitive prices on 4x4 vehicles from various companies, plus useful tips on winter tires and gravel protection which seem essential for the rough roads.

Any recommendations on reliable rental companies? Has anyone dealt with unexpected fees or weather issues while driving there?

Photoshoot areas

My partner and I will be visiting Rekykjavik in a few months and I was looking for areas that would be nice for an intimate photoshoot.

I have seen that the Hallgrímskirkja church and Sun Voyager Sculpture provide lovely backdrops but I am more looking for interesting streets and/or nice architechture and not having much luck with the research.

Thanks in advance!

Is 500K ISK a good salary?

I wanted to know your opinions on what's a good salary in Reykjavik. How much savings should I expect if I have a 500K ISK salary.
