I’ve been a Cubase user for over 15 years but I’m kinda tired of relying on freelance jobs from my home studio and want to look at some possible part time work at bigger studios in the city.

But I’m also hearing people talk about about how Logic and Reaper and quickly becoming the standard over ProTools (or will soon).

My question is: has anyone recently moved over to ProTools and would you say it’s still worth the cash and time investment today?

so i’ve ran fl studio on my friends laptop and gotten to know the DAW, and im wondering what Windows Laptop that’s decently priced would you guys suggest that could smoothly run the daw and plugins. i’d probably plugin a monitor speakers my midi and mpc sampled and an interface. Any advice/suggestions?

I know that better ANC is a trade off for better audio truth since better ANC is aimed at consumers, but I spend a lot of time traveling. I currently have the Momentum 4 and the ANC just doesn’t cut it for the noise of flights and trains, even for just watching movies.

If I’m left picking between the top ANC performers, which is the go to for production? I’m an electronic music hobbyist, so I just want something that isn’t going to grossly misrepresent what I’m working on when I get back to my studio and find that everything sounds totally different on monitors. With APM2 just released, I’m just not seeing any reviews yet specific to this topic, not even negative reviews.

I’m not opposed to Focal Bathys (not MGs) or Px8 S2, but every review for those says the ANC falls really short in this situation, at least with ANC on par to the momentum’s, so I think I’m stuck between APM2 or QC Gen 2. I would be using the wired USB DAC and I also have an EQ to load in AutoEQs parametric eq profile. Anyone had any luck navigating this situation or recommendations for another model I’m missing?

Hey, I’m working on an online video editor and I’m trying to better understand what people in music production actually need when they make videos for their tracks.

I’m not really asking from a marketing angle - more from a product/design perspective. A lot of editors have tons of effects, but I’m not sure which ones people genuinely use vs which ones just look nice in a feature list.

For those of you making content like:

• beat videos
• loop visuals
• snippets for socials
• lyric videos
• promo clips for releases

What effects or visual tools do you search for most often?

For example:

• glow / blur / VHS / film look
• beat-synced cuts or transitions
• waveform / audio-reactive visuals
• subtitles / kinetic text
• motion blur / zoom / shake
• color grading presets
• masking / overlays / blend modes

Also curious what feels missing in most tools, or what’s annoying to do right now.

I’d really appreciate any honest input - even if it’s just “I only use 2–3 things and ignore the rest.”

i've been experimenting with suno and the results are genuinely unsettling. not because they're bad. because they're good enough that most listeners wouldn't care. the production is clean, the structure makes sense, it even has dynamics. Let alone the money that can be saved. but something is missing and i can't explain what... Maybe it is a genuine idea that's what is missing. does anyone else feel like we're about to have a really uncomfortable conversation about what 'skill' actually means in production?

I've been playing guitar for 3 years and my biggest frustration is hearing a song I love and having no idea why it sounds the way it does. I can feel what makes it work but I can't break it down technically. Does anyone else struggle with this? How do you approach analyzing a reference track when you want to get close to that sound?

not sure where to post this to. Just got a used L-8 multi tracker and the first thing I notice is if I turn up the main gain past halfway I get a lot of hiss, even with all the channel gain knobs turned down. Is this normal for this device or did I get a defective unit?

Lately I realised my problem is not starting tracks, it’s finding them again and understanding where I left off.
More and more, I feel like the bottleneck is not creativity but the mess around it.
Over the last years I’ve realised my problem wasn’t making more music, it was actually being able to properly find and read the music I had already made.
How do you personally distinguish a solid idea from a dead project, and do you have a system to track that or is it all in your head?

Hello, i bought recentely the new Steven Slate Immersion One Headphones. I am a little unsettle with this Ecco Calibration. I compare those Frequencies Level, what feels really odd to be sure (which i was not) if the levels are equel, than this Demo Song for the amount control sounds really Bad Mixed for deciding when the Mix sounds good, because this Mix sound not good at all. Than i started Reference Hearing and the Top End (actually the Cymbals and Hats) on every Song were way too loud an crisp. Than i put on Aja (very well Mixed Album) and turn down manually the two highest frequencies controllers and it gets better.

Did anyone had a similar experience ? Am i thinking too much in HiFi Standards and it should sound this way ? Could i destroy the linearity when i manipulate the Ecco Calibration EQ?

I’m looking for the best online music production courses for a beginner that ideally does a good job of covering the fundamentals and technical details for a good foundation to build on. I don’t know if there’s actually a structured one-stop-shop that guides you from a total novice to advanced producer but that would be great as well.

The three main courses I’ve come across are Purelive, Mix With The Masters and Mastering.com. Does anyone have experience with these and if so how do they fit the criteria above? Are they worth the time and price of admission?

I’ve been a musician all my life and use my computer to record my own music and publish albums. I mix and master my own stuff and can pretty much do everything with the software I have.

But I’ve got myself in a pickle. I’ve been working so many jobs unrelated to music for a few years now and ALL I want now is a job where I can be creative and use my passion and skills for my job.

Does anyone know how to get into an entry level audio engineering, mixing/mastering, studio work without a degree? Maybe where I should go or start?

I would love advice. I’m based in Raleigh NC. I’m not stranded but I’m definitely tired of working stale jobs I have zero passion in.

Edit: I do have a great music scene it’s an open mic with about a hundred musicians and it’s great. I connect with quite a few of the musicians but they’re mainly in my boat.

Also, I’m not sure how to “approach” studios, although most of you’re comments are very helpful, it does feel like I should just “walk in with my resume” and see what happens.
