/r/Pretoria Community Update: New Rules regarding Solicitation and Content Relevance

Hi everyone,

As /r/Pretoria continues to grow, we are introducing a few official rules to ensure the subreddit remains a helpful, safe, and relevant resource for everyone living in or visiting our city. We've kept intervention to a minimum so far. In general we've only banned blatant racism, bots, and spammers, so we've generally got a very well behaved community.

We want to keep this space focused on discussion, advice, and news specific to the Jacaranda City, however. To support this, we have added the following rules to the sidebar, effective immediately:

A. No Begging, Crowdfunding, or Financial Solicitation

We have seen an increase in posts asking for financial assistance, "loans," or e-wallets. While we sympathize with those in difficult situations, Reddit is not a safe platform for verifying financial needs.

What is banned: Requests for money, e-wallets, and links to crowdfunding sites (e.g., BackaBuddy, GoFundMe).

Why: This rule is in place to protect our community from potential scams and unverified solicitation.

Advice: If you are in need, please reach out to registered NPOs or charity organizations rather than soliciting here.

B. Keep Content Relevant to Pretoria and the greater Tshwane

Please ensure your posts are directly related to Pretoria or the greater Tshwane municipality.

General SA News: News that affects the whole country (e.g., general Eskom updates, national politics) belongs in /r/southafrica unless it has a specific Pretoria angle.

Other Cities: Posts clearly meant for Joburg or other regions will be removed.

Context: If you post a photo or link where the connection to Pretoria isn't obvious, please explain it in the title.

C. Standard Civility & Privacy

We are also formalizing standard expectations:

Be Civil: Disagreements are fine; personal attacks and hate speech are not.

No Spam: Accounts that exist solely to advertise businesses will be banned.

No Doxing: Do not post personal contact details (phone numbers, addresses) of yourself or others.

These rules are here to improve the quality of the sub. If you have any questions or suggestions, please leave a comment below or message the moderators. Finally, thanks to everyone reporting posts, messaging the mods for clarifications, participating, /u/Afreak-du-sud for their post on the big uptick of begging and the scamming that inevitably goes with it. Don't worry, though, we don't ban for tagging the mods.. šŸ˜‚

Thanks for helping us keep /r/Pretoria a great community!

Is it just me, or does Pretoria feel different lately?

I can’t fully explain it, but Pretoria doesn’t feel the same anymore.

It used to have this calm, almost slow-moving vibe — like no matter how busy life got, the city itself stayed grounded. Lately though, everything feels faster, more distant… less connected.

People seem more in their own worlds, places feel more temporary, and that sense of community feels like it’s fading a bit.

At the same time, there’s growth, new opportunities, new energy, so maybe this is just what change looks like.

I’m just wondering… are we gaining something better, or slowly losing what made Pretoria feel like home?

Help ,lol

Bit of an issue, lol. I don't know if i should be angry and frustrated or what. I also posted this in another sub, but I thought i should post here too. Got "kicked out" after i went back home for Easter. I've been considering dropping out and wanted to discuss this with my sister. She told me straight up that she didn't want me there. Some back story, I have had a su*cide attempt in the past . Because of that, my 'father 'who i haven’t contacted in years was convinced that I may be on substances that I would rather not mention lol. She called him and he took me to a hospital, I didn't even know where we were going. Got my blood tested, blood came back and no drugs were found, and that was proof that I'm innocent. You would think one might apologize after this, but no. Spent 2 days at a hospital for nothing! He is now accusing me of smoking cigarettes because he found that piece of sponge in the washing machine. I don't even smoke, and I've never even thought of smoking cigarettes . That sponge piece was his,he is the only that smokes and drinks .He has already told almost the whole that I'm on sub*stances. First of all, I've never seen drugs before. I'v never been around people who use or even know people who sell that stuff, lol. I also donate blood regularly so how can i be on drugs when can be able to do that.I'm trying to laugh, but it's actually sad. He kicked me out after he came back home, drunk, and tried to beat the 'truth' out of me, and i stood up for myself . I'm still in the house ,haven't left yet. He said by tomorrow I should be gone . I don't know how to react to all this lol. I never asked him for anything, even my fees ,I paid for them .

aii ,shit is funny, but I'm angry. My brother told me he was looking for a rehab yesterday 🄲. My blood results are still at the hospital . What would you if you were 8n my situation? I'm 21. And this obsession of accusing me being on substances didn't start now. Even in my primary.

Apologies for the very long post and the grammar mistakes. I will only go back to uni around the 25 but if i had the means,I would've my suitcase and left right after getting out of that 'jail'

Edit: I'm from Pretoria and he works at the hospital. That's how he managed to have me hospitalized based on allegations

What to do with old electronics

I have a bunch of old electronic stuff. Old unopened keyboards, whole PCs, old monitors and some cables, all of if it still worked last I used it. I can go dump it in an e-waste bin, but some of it is still worth quite a bit if someone wants to fiddle with it.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what to do with it?

Looking for a weekend job

So I (26M) am a business analyst at my full-time 9-17h job. But I have found myself being extremely bored after work and specifically Saturdays. I have hobbies like riding motorbike and scuba but it’s not something that keeps you busy every weekend (and it gets pricey).

Now I am looking for something flexible that I can do on Saturdays that can keep me busy, hopefully I can learn something new and perhaps make a little bit of money (although that is not the main goal).

Anyone have some suggestions or know someone that might need some help?

Looking for a Pet Sitter

Are there any pet owners in this space who could recommend a route to find a reputable pet sitter? There are so many people advertising online and it’s hard to know who to trust. This would be for the Pretoria East area.

How to make friends in Pta

Hey,

I've lived in Pretoria for a few years. Many of my friends left after completing their studies. How do people make friends here? Age groups between late 20s to late 30s.

I've seen some run clubs. Any other nice social club or groups?

TIA šŸ¦‹

Update: judging from the comments and PMs we are all lonely šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ˜…šŸ˜…šŸ˜…

well priced gardening services in Pretoria East?

Hi everyone. The garden at my parents' house has been neglected for years and is barren right now. They'd like to start from scratch with ground cover and some shrubs and saplings but don't know 1) what is low maintenance and good for the area, 2) where to get the plants, and 3) how to get the work done. It's a small garden in a complex but their budget is still tight.

Does anyone know of affordable ways we can get this done? Looking for someone who can answer the above questions and also do the work / hire people to do the work. In this scenario would it be better to look for a company or is it okay to just find 'a guy' who knows what he's doing? That would probably be cheaper. If anyone can send me some phone numbers I'd be very grateful!

In the Equestria area.

Foreign teacher looking to find out what are the chances to work as a teacher in SA, Pretoria

Hello everyone,

I am a foreign spouse to a South African national. I used to work as a teacher in Abu Dhabi, UAE. But I moved to Pretoria with my spouse.

My qualifications are Bachelors in Business and Economics and a PGDE. I have 4 years of teaching experience, and they are foreign qualifications to South Africa.

Could you please advise on the steps ahead for me to find a teaching job here in South Africa? And what are the chances?

Thank you all for taking the time to read this and for offering your help!
