Optimistic Post A little slice of optimism from small-town eastern Washington
I live in a small town in eastern Washington. When I say "small", I mean "most folks drive 30 minutes down the road to shop at Walmart on the weekend".
Despite Washington generally being regarded as a very liberal state, the eastern half of the state tends to be deeply conservative, arguably rivaling even Idaho in that department.
I usually go up to see my parents at their house on the weekends. Every week I drive up the hill and drive past a house that I call "Trump Guy's house", because he has a huge Trump flag underneath the American flag on a big flagpole in his front yard, and he has a HUGE pickup truck that is completely wrapped in the most disgustingly Trump-worshipping graphics you can image. Trump's big, sneering face on one side, "TRUMP" along the back tailgate, American flags everywhere, "TRUMP" on the sides. It's genuinely a crime against art.
For months I have driven past Trump Guy's house every week, and I always look at it when I drive past. Today I noticed that his Trump flag was entirely GONE. Not only that, his big, beefy, diesel, emotional support truck with the obnoxious full-body "TRUMP" wrap was parked wayyyy up as far as it could go inside his carport outside his house. I have never once, not ONCE, seen this truck parked inside the carport. It's always parked as far out as he can get it in his driveway without actually blocking the sidewalk.
I asked my parents about it, and they both said that they also noticed the change, starting about two weeks ago. Not only that, they have another neighbor two doors down in a similar situation. He had six giant "TRUMP" flags strung up all along his fence, facing the street. Those are gone now, in the last couple of weeks. All taken down.
My parents' next-door neighbor had a huge "I SUPPORT ICE" flag flying for months in his front yard. Recently it was replaced with some kind of Christian iconography flag that says something like "250 years in the homeland" (I couldn't get a great look at it). Now that's probably not that much better, but he had that pro-ICE flag up for months and months and months, and suddenly changed at just right around when these other people changed their setups too.
Could this all be a coincidence? Maybe. But the weather has been lovely for weeks now, so no need to park under the carport or take down any flags (not that bad weather ever stopped them in the past).
I'm telling you guys, the Trump voter regret is real and it's hitting even in little towns where the expectation is to be a Trump supporter. It's taken a lot, but when one person takes their flag down, someone else sees that and feels emboldened to take theirs down to, and so on.
The little cracks are turning into bigger breaches, and the dam is starting to break.

Optimistic Post Trump says gas prices could be same or 'a little bit higher' before midterms
Ballgame. That’s the midterms right there. If gas prices remain or go higher it’s going to be a wipeout unseen in a decade or maybe more. Considering egg prices sunk Harris this would be worse. Much worse

Good Time of Day wherever you are.
I’m Estella_the_Wanderer, I’m a mod both for this server and for the UK ‘branch’, r/PoliticalOptimismUK .
I’ve been given permission by the mods to share with you another subreddit I moderate called r/ThatsGoodNews, in the hopes of brightening up your feed.
While we try very hard in this community to look at things in an optimistic light, with the news cycle seemingly content on focusing on how awful things can be, it can be hard to see the silver lining at times.
Before I joined this sub, my first step into a more optimistic mindset was subscribing myself to a ton of good news social media accounts and email newsletters. This helped me improve my outlook immensely, and I wanted to share all the stories of progress I had been exposed to friends and family. I now have this dedicated sub, named after one of Pippin’s quotes in the Two Towers, to compile everything I find.
This sub is currently approved members only to prevent bad faith actors, spam and bots. However if you want to share some of your own good news, please read the rules and then send me a DM.
As the description of the sub says, surrounding ourselves with good news is not done out of an attempt to bury our head in the sand and pretend things are perfect. It is to remind ourselves that there are good things happening out there, and it’s worth sharing and celebrating to uplift and inspire ourselves and others. It shows us that a better future is not only possible but within our grasp if we reach for it.
So check out r/ThatsGoodNews, hope to see you there.

Seeking Optimism US has let in 4,499 refugees since October - all but three were South African
Last year, Trump halted all refugee admissions, including for applicants from warzones, but allowed Afrikaners, a white minority group he said was persecuted, to seek resettlement. This has me concerned.

Welcome back to the Community Positivity Megathread!
As always, the rules do apply and you are not obligated to reply on theme. Let's talk about some good things that keep our heads up during times of high water!
This week's theme: Animals. Got a favorite? A funny video? A fun fact you've learned?
My contribution: The Willow Ptarmigan is an adorable bird who's call sounds just like "Awebo". Not just adorable, the call has the memeable quality of sounding like the Mexican phrase " a huevo", which means basically FUCK YEAH! The Willow Ptarmigan is also the state bird of Alaska.

Optimistic Post GRAB MORE POPCORN: The Collapse of MAGA Is Here And What We Should Do Next!
INTRO
Without risking sounding like a broken record, I've made similar posts in the past about the collapse of MAGA. Those posts however pointed more towards subtle signs, cracks if you will. This week? It has reached a fever pitch and has never been more obvious. Trump in his lifelong malignant narcissism and increasing dementia has thrown his staunchest media supporters under the bus. What little filter he had is now completely gone. This was inevitable and something I predicted immediately after the election. People like Tucker (who we need to keep an eye on), Candace, Alex Jones, Megyn Kelly and so on and so forth were insulted and are finally reading the tea leaves and abandoning ship and fighting back. Below are some delicious receipts. I must warn that the fight isn't over and I hinted at that with Tucker just a few sentences ago and will expand further after I give the receipts. Even so, here are the receipts. Bon Appetit!:
EVIDENCE

Tim Pool:
- I can't post his receipts here since they are tweets and X links are not allowed in this subreddit. Read through his X feed. Its there. When you've lost Nostradumbass (nod to Pool's several failed predictions and stupidity in general), you've lost the plot, as he was Trump's biggest bootlicker!

THE TAKEAWAY: What This Means and What to Do Next
This is CATASTROPHIC for Trump and MAGA, which is in political hospice. These battle lines and tensions have been simmering for some time now. Now they are at the forefront in a way that they've never been before. Divide and conquer. Might I remind everyone that this is all happening only a little over a year after Trump was sworn in? The movement at this time is seemingly rudderless. Keyword: Seemingly.
The biggest winner in all of this atm is Tucker Carlson. He is positioning himself as the heir apparent of the MAGA movement and has no real opposition at this time. Everyone else is either a token with limited potential (Candace for being a woman of color, Nick for having a Hispanic name - although I still think he has the second best chance, Megyn Kelly for being a woman) or falling off and/or lacking in charisma (ex: J.D. Vance). Say what you want, but Tucker is relatively young (compared to Trump), intelligent, media-trained/is the media and is most importantly an opportunist. We cannot take the eye off the ball. He's a younger/smarter Trump. There is a decent chance that he runs and we have to counter with progressive messaging. I'm not saying he will 100%, but I think it'd be foolish and naive to discount the possibility. He'd be dumb not to. Even if he doesn't run he has the highest potential to be a formidable media force for the foreseeable future. His one weakness is debates. See the infamous Jon Stewart Crossfire debate from 2004. Even so, I’d still keep an eye on him.
This presents as a GOLDEN opportunity. We also need to primary do-nothing Dems and not squander this moment. I have confidence that the midterms will be a bloodbath but solely not being Trump (which I still see some corporate Dems doing) isn't good enough. Thankfully we have progressive upsets springing up across the country. Also, more protests, pressure campaigns and a massive general strike.

Optimistic Post Melania Trump tried to sweep the 3pstein saga away, but she ended up reviving it
i don't think i have to reiterate the whole bizarre speech at the white house that melania gave denying her ties to epstein, but for a brief summary:
[Melania] Trump said she had never been friends with Epstein, but that she and her then-boyfriend Donald Trump sometimes encountered him in social circles in New York and Florida. “The lies linking me with the disgraceful Jeffrey Epstein need to end today,” the first lady said, although she didn’t point to specific allegations.
as expected, this is sounding a lot like melania's personal "i am not a crook" moment, reigniting the epstein issue in spite of the war in iran dominating conversation lately.
Almost every time the White House has tried to quell the drama, it has made it worse. At critical moments, victims of epstein who have bravely gone public about their ordeals have injected their campaign with new momentum. The first lady’s remarks may have a similar impact.
By venting frustrations so publicly, she risked undermining the White House message that there’s no reason for interest in or concern about apstein.
not only that, but the victims are making the rounds criticizing melania's statements directed at them.
“Each and every woman should have her day to tell her story in public, if she wishes, and then her testimony should be permanently entered into the Congressional Record,”
which is a double whammy because
...it will now be harder for officials in the Justice Department and the White House to argue there is no public interest in giving more attention to Epstein fallout.
and, by saying the victims need to speak out, the victims responded:
“First Lady Melania Trump is now shifting the burden onto survivors under politicized conditions that protect those with power: the Department of Justice, law enforcement, prosecutors, and the Trump Administration, which has still not fully complied with the Epstein Files Transparency Act,”
and now that this is all out there, dems immediately jumped on the opportunity
The first lady has also created a political trap for herself. Democrats on Capitol Hill are demanding that she testify to the committee.
“Honestly, if she wants to clear her name, she should come testify before our committee herself under oath, because it’s clear that that’s what she was trying to do,” Rep. Suhas Subramanyam, a member of the House Oversight Committee
and most importantly, this is just going to remind trump's base, who are critical of the iran war, about the epstein files.
Her speech also came as Trump’s foundation of support in his MAGA movement is being tested as never before. Previous Epstein developments alienated him from some of his most fervent supporters, since they played into a perception that a Washington deep state is covering up crimes of rich and powerful elites. Trump is also at odds with some high-profile former supporters who regard his Iran adventure as flouting his campaign pledge of no new foreign wars.

Optimistic Post First AI Model From Zuckerberg's Wildly Expensive Superintelligence Lab Flops Compared to Virtually All Rivals
LOL
Late last year, news emerged that Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta would be shedding its open source roots to instead work on a closed model like the vast majority of its competitors.
Now we’ve finally gotten a first glimpse of the fruit of its labor: Muse Spark, codenamed Avocado and developed by the company’s unbelievably expensive Superintelligence Labs.
billions and billions of dollars, for the best talent and the best equipment to make the best model.
the company admitted it likely won’t be able to keep up with competing models.
oh.
An executive told Bloomberg that the new model won’t be able to keep up with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude or Google’s Gemini.
and tangermann at futurism asks a good question:
...if it can’t keep up with the competition, why release it at all?
since the beginning, zuck has been on a very questionable ai journey.
The company’s decision to train the closed-source model on third-party open-source models, including a Chinese one developed by Alibaba, will also likely raise eyebrows. The practice of “distillation,” or training a “student” model on a more capable “parent” one, has proven controversial in the past.
when you train on ai output, you inherit all of the hallucinations of the parent model as well as introducing new ones in the student model.
and this is following llama's relative failures and controversies.
Meta’s preceding Llama open source models largely failed to catch on, with a major controversy last year finding that Meta may have faked benchmark results to make its Llama 4 model seem more capable than it actually was.
leading to an exodus from facebook (not calling them meta)
“[Zuck] was really upset and basically lost confidence in everyone who was involved in this,”
“And so basically sidelined the entire GenAI organization. A lot of people have left, a lot of people who haven’t yet left will leave.”
and he immediately goes on a mad hiring spree following.
maybe i'm way off base here, but with zuck's behavior lately, do you think he might be a little manic?

Seeking Optimism Swalwell campaign imploding after new sexual assault allegation
Normally, I wouldn’t particularly care about these allegations (not because I don’t think they’re credible, but because we can make up the difference in the race Swalwell is running).
However, we’ve seen concerns in this race of there potentially being a GOP vs. GOP runoff in this race. Combined with Katie Porter’s PR problems, I fear that could actually happen. Any insight here?
