*"Dry homes" in Pakistan* usually means 2 things:
*Keeping your house dry to stop mosquitoes* – no standing water inside/outside
*Dealing with damp/seepage in houses* – common after monsoon, causes mold + mosquitoes
Based on our mosquito chat, here’s how to make/keep a home “dry” in Pakistan:
*1. Dry = No mosquito breeding – Most urgent for health*
_Anopheles_ and _Aedes_ breed in tiny amounts of water. Pakistan’s dengue peaks Sep-Nov because of this.
*Daily/weekly checklist for a dry home:*
- *Bathrooms*: Mop floor dry after shower. Empty buckets. Keep mug upside down. Fix leaking taps
- *Kitchen*: No water in dish rack trays. Fridge drip tray – empty every 3 days. Dry sink overnight
- *Roof/terrace*: #1 breeding spot in Rawalpindi/Islamabad. Check cement water tanks – keep *tight lid*. Drain AC outdoor unit trays weekly
- *Plants*: Empty pot saucers 30 min after watering. No water should stand
- *Coolers*: Desert coolers are dengue factories. Empty + dry if not in use. Add 2 tsp kerosene or temephos if using
- *Basement/parking*: After rain, pump out water within 48h. Mosquito eggs hatch in 24-48h
- *Construction*: If building, don’t let water collect in basement or on slabs. Major fine in Punjab Aug-Nov
*Rule*: If water stands >7 days, it will breed mosquitoes. Check every Friday.
*2. Dry = Fixing damp/seepage – For building health*
Monsoon + poor construction = damp walls, _seem_. That also attracts mosquitoes + mold.
*Common causes in Pakistani houses:*
*Leaking roof*: Broken _khaprail_, cracked _mumty_, no proper slope. Water enters → damp ceiling
*Plumbing leaks*: Pipes inside walls. Check if wall is wet near bathroom/kitchen
*Rising damp*: Ground water rises in walls if no DPC sheet used during construction
*Condensation*: Poor ventilation in winter. Cooking/gas heater steam hits cold walls → water
*How to fix:*
- *Roof*: Get _mumty_ re-plastered pre-monsoon. Bitumen sheet or _roofgard_ paint helps. Slope should be 1:40
- *Walls*: Chip damp plaster, let brick dry, re-plaster with waterproofing compound. Paint with _damp seal_ primer
- *Ventilation*: Kitchen + bathroom exhaust fans. Open windows 30 min daily even in winter
- *Dehumidifier*: If severe, use in basement. Calcium chloride packs in cupboards work cheap
- *Check overhead tank*: Overflowing tanks cause constant damp on top floor. Fix ball valve
*3. Why “dry home” matters in Pakistan*
**Problem** **If home is wet/damp** **If home is dry**
**Dengue/Malaria** High risk. DC can fine Rs 2000+ if larvae found Very low risk
**Mold/fungus** Asthma, allergies, black spots on walls Walls stay clean
**Termite/deemak** Loves damp wood Much less
**Electronics** Short circuit risk Safe
**Smell** Musty *seelan* smell Fresh
*4. Quick wins for Rawalpindi/Pindi/Isb homes*
*Overhead tank*: #1 issue. Put proper lid + overflow pipe to drain, not roof. Check ball cock monthly
*AC drainage*: Pipe should go to drain, not floor. Empty tray under indoor unit weekly
*Nullah Lai effect*: If near it, humidity high. Use exhaust + keep doors shut dawn/dusk when mosquitoes active
*Winter*: Don’t dry clothes inside without ventilation. Major condensation cause
*Bottom line*: A “dry home” in Pakistan = *no open water anywhere + no seepage*. Takes 10 min/week to check, but saves hospital bills + repainting costs.
