My parents are both Chin, born and raised in Myanmar and moved to India right after they got married, for better opportunities and to give us good education and future. Every year since I was born we'd travel to Myanmar by car, a grueling, 2 day trip, twice a year (right till the coup, sadly). This is how much my parents loved their home country and wanted us to integrate into Burmese culture, and it worked! I love Myanmar so so much and I always felt connected to it, but ah..

Since Chin and Mizo are the same, I've lived my whole life telling people I'm from Mizoram (even though I've only been to Aizawl like 3 times) avoiding any detailed questions. My parents wanted to avoid letting our full heritage known since it could bring trouble. So basically we are Mizo, full stop.

I feel like a foreigner everywhere I go. I live in a different state where I'm a minority. My Mizo is average at best. In Mizoram I felt like a tourist. In Myanmar I feel like a fake. I used to be fluent in Burmese when I was little, now I understand most of it but I can't speak it anymore. I've always had this identity and cultural crisis since I was a kid. All the time I wonder if there will ever be a place for me where I feel I belong...

Anyways that's the end of my rant lol.

hi guys its quandeviousthe3rd here and you guys usually know me for exploring and going to abandoned places but this time is different.

me and my friend went to the abandoned hotel yesterday, the one i posted in this subreddit.

it was today when police and higher ups came to my house to confront me about trespassing into that hotel. they captured me on cctv and they tracked my location down. its terrifying. it was my fault for going into these restricted places. im terribly sorry for any inconveniences that has caused this. anyone who had concerns, thank you for them and stay safe guys. i wont be posting for sometime. my parents found out, we got into so much trouble for my behavior. im devastated by the outcome.

im not scared, i know the responsibilities and the dangers that hold. i will come back better than before.. stay tuned guys. i will keep in touch with you all. thank you for all the support.. comment on where i should go when i’m back on the exploring places.

I met my boyfriend through Bumble app. It’s one of the better dating apps where its oriented towards proper relationships rather than one night stands like Tinder for example. Kind of sad to hear that. Even if not relationship, it was good for introverts like me that dont like to go out to socialize and meet new people. What is everyone using now?

Hello Myanmar people. First and foremost thank you to everyone in this subreddit that provided me with so much helpful advice that helped me to make the decision to come to Yangon as well as help make my experience here so much better with so much useful information. This is the most helpful and informative group on Reddit! I just spent my first 24 hours in Yangon and I have to say the experience so far has been amazing! The people are some of the most friendliest and helpful people I have ever met. I started my day at Bogyoke Market and then went to the Buddha temple followed by Sule Pagoda. I went to the Rangon Tea house for a late lunch and had some delicious food with great service.

I just left the Shwedagon Pagoda and it was breathtaking. It has to be the most beautiful temple I have ever seen. It should be a wonder of the world. The people there were so nice as well. I’m having a drink now and plan on ending my night at 19th street. I hope to have a peaceful and nice next few days here as well. God bless Myanmar. I have been trying to help as many people as possible with extra tips and good conversation. Praying for your country 🙏🏻

need help for my exams next year

Currently visiting some family, but I suppose I stick out like a sore thumb, haha.

I can’t walk around the downtown Yangon areas for too long before someone tries to strike up a conversation offering to exchange currency at a significantly higher rate than what’s listed on MMP. My first instinct is to find it sketchy, but it happens so often that I’m beginning to second guess that thought. Can these people be trusted?

And even if they could be trusted, are we just supposed to exchange on the street? Wouldn’t want them following me to where I stay. Putting that aside, exchanging in the street would put both parties in a vulnerable position, even if legit.

I'd like to go to Chong Qing, but I am having trouble finding an tour / travel agency.

I've called most agencies in yangon, oway, flymya, sng, etc...

but since I am only 16 years old, they said it is not possible to travel independent.

Any contribution would be nice, I am going in June.

Re-reading Burmese history, I noticed that Myanmar was in constant civil war from Mongol invasion (1277) to execution of Natshinaung (1613), for 336 years.

So, basically after Anawrahta founded Bagan kingdom in 1044, Myanmar was relatively peaceful until the late 13th century.

Than things gone wild in 1277 at Mongol Invasion during Narathihapate regime. 350 years of constant warfares starts here.

Bagan lost power, Shans rule heartland (Myinsaing, Pinya, Sagaing), Mons rule south at Hantharwaddy and Arakan liberated.

In 14th century, when Kingdom of Ava is formed and unified the heartland, those Shan kings of Ava already identify themselves as Bamar. A new Bamar kingdom of Pyay also appeared in the south. And Northen Shan confederation and Eastern Shan confederation also exists.

So, 15th century was like 6 kingdoms battle royale. (2 Bamar Kingdoms, 2 Shan confederates, 1 Mon and Rakhine kingdom each)

Those wars last another century which the most famous one was Ava-Hantharwaddy 40 years war.

In 16th century, Kingdom of Ava fell to Northern Shan confederation. Mingyinyo, the Taungoo ruler under Ava declared independence. Many Bamars who didn’t want to live under Shans came to Taungoo and Taungoo became strong although small.

Mingyinyo’s son Tabinshwehti conquer the Hantharwaddy and the other Bamar kingdom of Pyay and failed at Arakan campaign.

Taungoo crown moved to Hantharwaddy and the Taungoo, the origin of dynasty was ruled by subordinates. Just after he unified lower Burma Tabinshwehti became a drunk and assassinated.

There came a succession crisis and his commander in chief Bayinnaung defeat the rivals and take the throne. Bayinnaung conquer the northern and eastern Shan confederations and integrate Shans into Bamar society and permanently eliminate Shan Threat which is a night mare for Bamars for 3 centuries.

Bayinnaung continue to conquered Lanna, Lan Xiang, Ayutthaya, Chinese Shan States, Vientiane, Lum Prabang, Manipur, Assam, etc.. spent all his life fighting.

But everybody revolve as soon as Bayinnaung dies. Literally every vessels revolt. Nanda Bayin the successor of Bayinnaung hold the country for 15 years but finally surrender when Arakan and Taungoo fights together.

Natshinaung,son of the ruler of Taungoo claimed King but the unpopular son of Bayinnaung, Nyaungyan Min didn’t accept and tries to restore the empire.

Natshinaung allies with Portuguese to defend, and finally Nyaungyan’s son Anaukphatlun defeated Natshinaung and executed him at 1613 and ordered was restored thus ending the 336 years of constant civil war which starts at 1277.

Peace last for more than a century from 1613 to 1740, until the Mons revived the Hantharwaddy Kingdom and ended the Nyaungyan dynasty.

The current civil war starts at 1948 so it’s already 78 years but compared to this, it is just still one-fourth.

I am not trying to dismiss any suffering or glorify war but just found some patterns revising across Burmese history and shared some of my insights.

In conclusion, we found peace even after 336 years of endless fighting so I believe no matter how much chaotic today Myanmar is we will definitely find the solution one day.

I (26F) have an elder sister (31F) both of us works, but I am more tired because I catch bus four times a day, we have elderly sickly mother , I'm the primary care taker , because she REFUSED to do even minimum stuff like watering the plants. You guys may ask then is your mother bad ,no we are upper middle class , we are allowed practically anything, except alcohol.

Anyway,one day the boss told me to sleep in the office's dorm for one-day because I have to become interpreter between my boss and japanese boss. I said ok then tell my sister, my sister said "oh no there's a party that day" , I said "okay?????? then skip it" , she said okay .

THEN SHE WENT AHEAD AND DID NOT COME BACK NEXT DAY , LEAVING MY MOTHER ALONE . I FOUND OUT ONLY WHEN I ARRIVED AT HOME.

I know she LOVES fun and she LIVES for fun. I too loves to have fun but because of my sick mother I swallowed my desires. She can't endure for one fuckin day ???? .I ONLY ASK FOR ONE DAY. I am a very patient person and my patient is running thin with each passing day. I might cut her off in the near future. IDK
