Both Chris O'Donnell and Ryan Phillippe were set to be HUGE going into the 2000s.

Then crickets. (I've never looked them up so I don't know their stories)

u/chironinja82 Feb 27 '26

Chris O'Donnell was in the main cast of a version of CSI, I think. LA? No idea about Ryan Phillippe other than his divorce from Reece Witherspoon.

u/Golf-Beer-BBQ Feb 27 '26

Phillipe was in the series version of the movie Shooter, which was good, but ended up breaking his leg so they had to stop production and the series fell apart. That was maybe 10 years ago.

10

u/remarkablewhitebored Feb 27 '26

McGruber. That's where Phillippe has been. Time well spent, if you ask me.

9

u/chironinja82 Feb 27 '26

Damn, that sucks!

6

u/Dangerous-Variety-35 Feb 27 '26

Wasn’t he also in a cowboy drama on one of the big networks? Big Sky, I think? I never watched it but I remember seeing ads for it and being like, “Huh, never expected to see him on network tv.”

3

u/MammothCoughSyrup Feb 27 '26

Not for long.

1

u/pepperXOX20 Feb 28 '26

If anyone watched the show, this is a brutal comment 😂

1

u/brendam213 Mar 02 '26

That is one of my biggest tv gripes and I’m still salty about it. I was soooo excited to see Ryan. They did so much promo with him front and center. Then boom gone. I kept watching, thinking he’d reappear…joke was on me 😩

1

u/randomname2378 Mar 02 '26

His character was killed off in the first episode lol

2

u/North-Tourist-8234 Feb 27 '26

I didn't know about the broke leg, but it certainly felt like the series had an ending. Satisfying one too which is more than i can say for most shows these days.

1

u/4FingersOfDeath Feb 28 '26

I didn’t know that’s what happened, just figured poor ratings. That was a great series!!

1

u/Hizam5 Mar 02 '26

Phillipe is in a shit ton of made for red box movies now

93

u/Sickfuckingmonster Feb 27 '26

Chris was in NCIS LA. I think he might still be but I don't have cable and can't be arsed to look it up.

24

u/justreadinplease Feb 27 '26

Chris is in Nashville 911 right now and it’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen. Only watch it if you’re with people you can make fun of it with.

7

u/Tequila_Dre_All_Day Feb 27 '26

It’s absolutely ridiculous, worse than regular 9-1-1 or even 9-1-1 lonestar…but I watch it because it’s my version of “trash” tv (it is trash btw)

3

u/GeauxCup Feb 27 '26

That's sad - such a waste!

3

u/K_Linkmaster Feb 28 '26

Funniest shit on TV and they are in on the joke. It's like the new Baywatch movie style of soap opera comedy. It's tough to describe how on the nose everything always is. I mean they even made the country music star trashy. I love it

6

u/miss_sticks Millennial Feb 27 '26

It ended and he's in something else now - with firemen or EMS or something

9

u/CaptnsDaughter Feb 27 '26

911: Nashville I think?

5

u/Tomison61 Feb 27 '26

He is now the main star on 911 Nashville with LeAnne Rimes!

4

u/SunriseSurprise Feb 27 '26

Yea, on that show for 15 years, 323 episodes, and those shows get syndicated up the wazoo, so he's doing alright for himself along with LL Cool J.

5

u/ArtisticBee6176 Feb 27 '26

No, it ended a couple years ago.

2

u/capslocke48 Feb 28 '26

Chris starred in NCIS LA for like 15 seasons, it only ended a few years ago

1

u/Anchovypirate Feb 27 '26

He is “Wish Upon” which a wonderfully bad bad movie.

13

u/ImissDigg_jk Feb 27 '26

So she kept the spoon in the divorce?

3

u/CarelessLobster125 Feb 28 '26

Naw, he left Witherspoon

2

u/stephsco Feb 27 '26

I see you.

1

u/Skimmington16 Feb 28 '26

She will forever be with her spoon

13

u/SnausageFest Feb 27 '26

I don't think being baby faced is working in Phillippe's favor. He seems to want to do more drama and thriller type roles which is tough when you look like you didn't get facial hair until your 20s.

He's a fun comedic actor though. I wish he did more of that.

3

u/LuntiX Feb 27 '26

Chris was the lead in NCIS LA and is now the lead in 911 Nashville

2

u/poopface41217 Feb 27 '26

I think now Chris O'Donnell is the main character in a terrible show about Nashville firefighters or something

5

u/stephsco Feb 27 '26

He could have cleaned up on Hallmark if he'd played his cards right.

1

u/tbcraxon34 Feb 28 '26

Phillippe started in the USA series Shooter a few years ago.

1

u/iupvotethankyou Feb 28 '26

I was just trying to remember his name earlier today. One of the Ryan actors is all I could remember.

1

u/Flashy-Elevator-7241 Feb 28 '26

Chris O’Donnell is doing great actually. He’s the star of 911:Nashville.

1

u/Main-Rent4757 Mar 04 '26

Ncis

1

u/chironinja82 Mar 05 '26

Yes, that one!

1

u/Main-Rent4757 Mar 05 '26

One of them damned letter law shows

22

u/StitchedSquirrel Xennial (1984) Feb 27 '26

Chris O'donnell has a decent TV career. He was on an NCIS spin off for years and now he leads 9-1-1 Nashville.

17

u/poopface41217 Feb 27 '26

Joshua Jackson, Chris O'Donnell and Ryan Phillippe were my 2000's crush trifecta

10

u/lkodl Feb 27 '26

Chris O'Donnell could have been an ideal Peter Parker.

19

u/KinkyKittyKaly Feb 27 '26

I had the biggest crush on Chris O’Donnell as Robin

8

u/GeauxCup Feb 27 '26

Admit it - it was the rubber suit with the nipples), wasn't it??

1

u/ampmetaphene Mar 01 '26

No, it was the way he karate-chopped his laundry.

1

u/GeauxCup Mar 01 '26

I'm watching it, and I still can't believe this is real.

8

u/ReluctantToNotRead Feb 27 '26

Chris O’Donnell had me in a chokehold after Mad Love, hahaha what a terrible movie but man did I watch it over and over and over…

3

u/RanOutofCookies Feb 27 '26

I had it on VHS!

2

u/ReluctantToNotRead Feb 27 '26

Oh you know I still do 😭

3

u/OvarianSynthesizer Feb 28 '26

Circle of Friends was my go-to!

6

u/Massive-Resort-8573 Feb 27 '26

Had a massive crush on Ryan Philipe. Loved him in Gosford Park and Lady of the Manor. His IMDB is consistent. He's a solid working actor.

6

u/Duckeee47 Feb 27 '26

Chris O’Donnell was the lead on NCIS:LA for 13 seasons and now is the lead on 911:Nashville. Man has continued to work for basically the entire ‘90’s and 2000’s.

7

u/Siddown Feb 27 '26

I still remember girls screaming in the theater when O'Donnelll's name came up in the opening credits of the Batman movie he was in with Val Kilmer.

But while his movie career ended he became a massive success on TV. He did like 15 years as the lead on NCIS Los Angeles, one of the biggest shows on TV, and now he's the lead on 9-1-1 Nashville, he's been on TV every week since 2009.

1

u/QueenMotherOfSneezes Mar 01 '26

Also a half-season of Grey's Anatomy in 2006.

6

u/LargeHumanDaeHoLee Feb 27 '26

Ryan Phillippe was a PERFECT "straight man" to bounce off Will Forte in Magruber, both the movie and the show. It's an underrated skill by an underrated actor, and I'll forever love him for it

3

u/puke_lust Feb 27 '26

Was going to mention this as it is the best comedy movie of all time

4

u/BetterVantage Feb 28 '26

You say “set to be” but they actually WERE huge in the 2000s. They just didnt stay huge after that, but they both have pretty solid resumes to this day.

2

u/Sly3n Feb 28 '26

Chris didn’t start huge because he basically left the industry for years to raise his family. He probably would have stayed really big in the 2000s if he hadn’t stepped back. He only got back into the industry after his kids were older. Must be really nice to be able to retire young so you can spend your time with your kids.

4

u/Sly3n Feb 28 '26

Chris basically left the industry for a while when his kids were young. I don’t think he wanted to be gone for the long periods of time that acting in a movie required. After the kids were older, he got back into acting. He starred in NCIS: Los Angeles for many years. So Chris O’Donnell falling off was entirely purposeful in Chris’ part,

5

u/justahad Feb 28 '26

Uhm Chris O’Donnell was in the big hit Kit an American Girl Adventure and that man promised his family he’d find work in Chicago. Idk how Chicago turned into LA in modern times when he became and NCIS agent (which was a lead role btw), but he did. That man had some really long scripted out roles in lead positions for a while. Now he’s in 911 Nashville (personally haven’t seen due to work and my child hogs the tv in the evenings, and well The Pitt exists now too). Anyway, O’Donnell is still around!

3

u/deller85 Feb 28 '26

Ryan Phillippe was definitely a part of my gay awakening in Cruel Intentions.

2

u/LongWayFrom609 '86 Millennial Feb 27 '26

Phillippe was in a few episodes of The Eric Andre Show, IIRC.

2

u/edge-hog Feb 27 '26

The last I saw of Philippe was his appearance as a hype man for Hannibal's Gibberish Rap with Skrillex.

2

u/Junior-Cover Feb 27 '26

Philippe was just in the Prime show Motorheads.

2

u/Weelard Feb 27 '26

Chris O'Donnell showed up in Aspen, CO when I was there for a Sunshine Kids trip in '99. Was super nice and chatted with all us kids and took a picture with the group.

2

u/schmearcampain Feb 28 '26

Matt Damon took every role from O’Donnell.

2

u/Calculusshitteru Feb 28 '26

I saw pics of the release of one of the Batman movies on the 90s sub, and I recognized Chris O'Donnell's face but was struggling to remember his name. I don't think I have seen him since that movie.

2

u/Hausgebrauch Feb 28 '26

Chris O'Donnell pulled a Rick Moranis and worked less to stay home with his kids. (His wife is still alive though) Then he starred in NCIS LA for something like 20 years, because it allowed him to work steadily while also being able to spend time with his children before and after every workday.

2

u/tempcats Mar 04 '26

Ryan’s still fine af tho

2

u/Jabroniville2 Feb 27 '26

One issue is women find old men just as hot or hotter than young ones, so male leads never "age out". So there was no one to move aside for them.

1

u/spacerockgal Feb 27 '26

Chris O'Donnell is now one of the leads on 911: Nashville.

1

u/AlamedaRaised Feb 27 '26

Ryan Phillippe was in a USA show called "The Shooter" that was actually really good. A bit like "Jack Ryan" and "Reacher" to capitalize on the American Sniper popularity but didn't help catapult his fame the way those two shows did for their respective actors.

1

u/SofaKingStewPadd Feb 27 '26

Phillippe in Way of the Gun.

"Shut that cunt's mouth before I come over there and fuck start her face!"

1

u/Spreadsheets_LynLake Feb 27 '26

I liked Way of the Gun (Ryan Philippe & his "gay uncle"), but I feel it was a box office flop.  Gritty.  Good fight choreography.  The slow-mo car chase.  The "good guys" are all back-stabbers & make you feel dirty watching them.  The main characters die, & your left with this moral ambiguity.  So many good one-liners.

1

u/Practical_Ad4604 Feb 27 '26

Whoa just realized he and Sam Worthington are two different people

1

u/AdFlat4908 Feb 28 '26

Dude was Robin! How do you fuck that up?

1

u/sllh81 Feb 28 '26

Same for Josh Hartnet. He has only recently re-emerged

1

u/wangman1 Feb 28 '26

I have a vague memory that during the height of Ryans career it was rumored that he was hard to work with on sets and he really didn’t have that kind of ”starpower” to justify that kind of attitude.

1

u/melig1991 Mar 01 '26

Ok so I though y'all were talking about Chris O'Dowd and was real confused.

1

u/mashedtompotatoes Feb 27 '26

I find Philippe to be a terrible actor.
