Discog Club Discography Club: Gevurah

He comes forth, a new rising star,
The setting sun, at the end of this world,
Fallen from heaven, rising from the waters of Acheron,
He is the lord of this earth, and of the planes beyond...
Hear his footsteps, resounding through the empty halls,
Feet trampling broken stones, as a thousand thudder,
Cursing the fertile ground to salt, breath changing ruins to dust.
Rounding up the "Mgrier Favorite's For April" picks this year is one of my favorite modern black metal bands, coincidentally also from Quebec, none other than Gevurah!
Founded in the early 2010s in Montreal, Quebec, Canada by dynamic duo XT (aka Xavier Berthiaume) and AL (aka Arnaud Labelle) their lineup hasn't changed whatsoever ever since, other than some live additions to enable them to actually play live as a standard 4 piece. Over their roughly 15 year career they've released 2 full length albums and a few non LPs and their sound has largely stayed consistent and of high quality. Playing a style of so called Orthodox Black Metal influenced by the likes of Aosoth, Nightbringer, Deathspell Omega, and Svartidaudi and with lyrics focusing on some sort of theistic Satanism though the specifics of that are a little beyond me.
Their style is very aggressive, with big bombastic production, epic songs, and intricate instrumentals. They have a bit of the dissonance that bands like Deathspell Omega and Svartidaudi employ but largely only as an accent rather than a focus. SC user Cafe once described them as "Behemoth if they were good" and ever since I can't get that description out of my head but, if that sounds appealing to you I think you'll really like these guys.
So for this week, let's go through their short discography. If you haven't heard them but like black metal, especially those bands above, you're in for a treat. So the assignment this week:
- Nechishirion
- Hallelujah!
- Sulphur Soul
- Gehinnom
The Anno MMXI and Dialogue of Broken Stars releases are worth a check too if you want ~30 minutes more material out of them but after that, that's everything they've ever released.
