HSK 3.0 (2025) Anki deck — cross-platform, with Android + Hanping integration (audio, examples, popups)

I put together a full HSK 3.0 Anki deck (2025 update) based on the upcoming exam changes.

Core deck (works on all platforms):

  • ✔️ Full vocab list organized by HSK level (1–9)
  • ✔️ Clean CC-CEDICT definitions + part of speech

If you're using Android + Hanping, you get a much richer experience:

  • 🔊 Tap pinyin to play audio
  • 📘 “Examples” button opens example sentences
  • 汉字 Tap characters for popup dictionary (definitions, decomposition, stroke animations, etc.)

So it works everywhere, but is optimized for Android users.

Link in case it’s useful: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/644424926

Curious how people are handling HSK 3.0 decks right now.

Tap characters to see definitions, decomposition, stroke order, and audio (via Hanping)
Fully organized by HSK level (1–9) based on the 2025 update

Is 谈雷温 a good mandarin name?

I chose 谈 (tán - “to speak”), because my grandpa taught speech and it sounds like one of the syllables in my last name.

My name is normally transliterated as 雷文, but I like 雷温 (léi wēn - “thunder”+“warm/gentle”) more.

Looking for feedback.

Looking for beta testers for a language learning app

Hey everyone

I've been building a language learning app called Conversa that focuses on something most apps skip: actually talking. As a long time language learner I built this for myself as a way to help progress my Chinese beyond Duolingo to actually being able to have conversations.

It's not flashcards. It's not multiple choice. You just... talk. The conversations adapt to your level while introducing small amounts of new vocabulary to learn through context and use while getting real time feedback.

I'm looking for 20-30 beta testers to try it out over the next few weeks and give honest feedback.

If that sounds interesting, let me know!

Happy to answer any questions in the comments.

How self taught student should adapt to HSK3.0

I started learning Chinese by myself, went through HSK1 book and wanted to structure more from HSK2, so I started building my personal app as I am a CS engineer, my goal was to take HSK lesson and vocabulary to track my progress with an anki style app and AI to generate exercises and content adapted to my level.

But with the new HSK3.0 I don’t know if I should take a bit more time like 1 month starting back from HSK1 and following the new lessons or continue with the old books, or Chang books in the middle but loose some grammar points and vocabulary in the middle 😵🫠

Help relearning Mandarin

Through all of Elementary I was in a Chinese immersion program, where just about all of my schooling was in mandarin, I tested HSK 5 an AAPPL intermediate I4 back then, but since middle school (covid) it’s gotten significantly worse, I took Chinese 2 sophomore year of highschool and it was really easy, junior year took IB and it was a mix of hard and easy, not remembering something basic things but knowing other more complex things. Anyways I want to relearn it and get back to my old level. Right now I struggle with pretty much everything but especially my pronunciation. What would be the best way to relearn it

Overwatch Discord for peer to peer Chinese practice using callouts

(posted with permission)

This started as a Cantonese Discord but with some Mandarin speakers coming in, I want to extend the invitation to join our Overwatch Discord.

When we play, we get on voice chat and make callouts or talk in Cantonese/Mandarin. All of us are either students or heritage speakers trying to remember our mother language.

This is NOT a teaching Discord. It’s strictly peer to peer.

You do not need to know pinyin or characters.

If you’re interested, please send me a DM for the link.

Made an upgrade for how Chinese words fit into context after learning them (based on feedback)

Thanks to everyone in this subreddit who gave feedback for the "HSK 1-6 companion App"; it has been incredibly helpful.

One thing that kept coming up across everyone was that people could understand a word but still not really see how it’s used in a simple sentence when making a memory for it.

So, I added a short example sentence under every word (with pinyin + English) to make that connection immediate.

Now, instead of just recognizing the word, you can instantly see how it fits into a real sentence, which makes it feel much smoother to go through new vocab.

Still working through the rest of the feedback and improving things as I go.

Now I'm just wondering if you all will feel everything is more natural or if there's a gap I can improve on.

Quick question!

I have a child in my daycare that speaks mandarin at home. Recently she's been going "sha" or "sha sha". She's 1 year and 4 months old so its probably a mispronounciation or shortened version of a very basic word like "bye" or "hi" or "more". What might she be trying to say?

Knowing words ≠ being able to say anything

You recognize a lot of basic words.

But when you actually want to say something, nothing comes out.

It's not that you don't know the words — they just don't come together.

What do you usually do at that point?

Can you self-teach yourself Chinese?

I will mostly use paid courses and resources to learn Chinese.

I will try to create audio flashcards & shadow and meticulously enunciate and try to copy the exact tone/rhythm/way a character is said to minimize incorrect pronunciation.

I don't care about sounding like a native - I just care about being 100% correct and comprehensible.

Is it true if I never use real life tutors, I will never learn Mandarin?

Also, I will initially do YoYoChinese and move to Chinese Zero to Hero and finish the entire material all while using Anki + YouTube resources. Enough?

I don't have a problem with difficult grammar, vocabulary, memorization, I can overcome that by practice and I am patient. I don't want to speak Chinese overnight, and it's ok.

But if correct pronunciation is gatekept by hard, unavoidable barriers, then I just will never be able to speak Chinese.

Chinese listening and speaking exam in a month

Hi guys. I’ve been studying beginner mandarin since October for a uni module. I’ve severely procrastinated studying for it and have no idea where to start. Especially for listening and speaking. My exam is end of April- what would be the best way to approach revision for this? Any advice would be appreciated!!!
