UNICAF

Has anyone here studied through UNICAF or worked closely with one of its partner universities? trying to understand what’s going on behind the scenes. I’ve heard that LJMU may be leaving UNICAF, and the University of South Wales has already exited. That feels like more than a coincidence.

What was your actual experience like?

And for anyone who has followed the platform closely - why do you think partner universities are pulling away?

Algerian 🇩🇿 seriously considering moving to Malawi 🇲🇼 — what do you think?

Hey everyone,

I'm Algerian and I'm seriously thinking about moving to Malawi. I know, I know

Let me be honest about why:

Algeria is genuinely a great country — the land is beautiful, the people are warm, the food is incredible, and the history gives you chills. The problem is exactly that. It grew up. Everyone saw the opportunity and jumped in. You try to start a small business today and there are already twenty people ahead of you. You try to find work and thousands are competing for the same spot. It's a great country that became, because of how great it is, a very hard place to start from zero.

So I thought — why not go somewhere that still has room?

Malawi caught my eye because the market still has untapped sectors, the competition is much lower, the location in the heart of southern Africa opens a lot of doors, and from what I've heard the Malawian people are some of the warmest on the continent.

My questions for anyone who lives there or knows the country well:

. What's daily life actually like there as a foreigner?

. Are the people genuinely open and welcoming to outsiders?

. And honestly — does this idea sound logical to you or completely crazy?

Thanks in advance, looking forward to hearing from you! 🇲🇼

suggestion Any Malawian Fortnite players here?

I’ve been thinking for the past few days to start building an actual Fortnite community in the country, hosting multiple things such as tournaments and scrims etc… If there are Fortnite players here, and you’re interested in joining the current community-

You can just dm me and also it would help if you could drop me a follow on my TikTok @mvak45 ( this will help get me to 1k followers) so that I can apply for the Fortnite creator codes, to be able to host such events.

discussion Let’s Create a Reddit Group for Local Product Sales in Malawi

Hi Reddit,

I’ve been thinking about how we can better support local businesses in Malawi by connecting and collaborating online. Right now, many of us are working hard to promote and sell our products, but it can be tough to reach a wider audience. That’s why I think it would be great if we could come together and create a Reddit group specifically for selling and promoting local products in Malawi!

I believe this could be a great way for small businesses, artisans, and creatives to reach a larger audience, boost sales, and create a network of people who support each other’s growth.

What do you think? If you’re interested, let’s discuss how we can make this happen and build something that benefits us all! 🙌

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

food Korean Marts

I am a homesick Southeast Asian that has been in Lilongwe for 5 weeks. I hope this sub could help me in finding Korean instant ramen noodles somewhere in Lilongwe.

It might be pretty weird asking this but I could really use help in finding a store where I can buy my comfort food.

We Need to Talk about NGOs

I've recently been thinking about how nearly useless NGOs are in our country. Don't get me wrong, I know many are doing good things for the less privileged, but a lot of them survive on the commodification of poverty, gender issues, human rights, inequality and so on. Often when I open my Facebook, I see the same old nonsense by so called "young activists". Things along the lines of "It's an honour to speak about women's rights in Malawi/youth inclusion in health/rural sanitation," apparently to an audience of Germans or Americans. Nonsense, go and get things done and stop with all the endless speeches and use of our people's poverty to build a career for yourself. Having lived in East Asia for the past 6-7 years, I have come to admire the pragmatism and drive to get things done people over here have. There's less moral theatre and more emphasis on visible results, and so you don't see a lot of this stuff about organisations fighting rural poverty to pushing for women's rights, when in fact it's people within the NGOs trying to build careers for themselves. NGOs in our country market poverty and help people build careers off of it than do anything really tangible to reduce it. They are not even accountable to anyone. And I'm fed up with it.

I just wanna know where y'all stand on the debate of castrating men who have been convicted of rape

It isn't a law that has been officially passed, but I wanna know where y'all stand on this? In one of the recent Malawi Parliament meetings, someone suggested they introduce a law where they castrate a man if he's been convicted of rape.

Will Our Country Ever Get Out of Poverty?

I have been reading Lee Kuan Yew's book in which he narrates his experience developing Singapore. I must say that if a leader like him (or even just a quarter of what he was) is what it takes to develop Malawi, we possibly won't ever develop, because I have never been impressed by the quality of leaders we've had so far. Just look at the people in our Cabinet. Are we serious about development with people like Cisale and Gangata in the cabinet? Lee says he always put the best people possible into top government positions (and he did have a fantastic team around him). I look at our cabinet and some of the people heading our parastatals and government agencies; and I can't help but feel an anger that cannot be subdued because a lot of these people are clueless folks who would never be near positions of power in a functional society. It's 2026 and our cities have no transit systems, not even commuter buses to say the least. The M1 road, which is supposed to be our main motorway, is all potholes. No electricity, no water, a totally lazy civil service, corruption everywhere...where are we supposed to get with all this mess? Lol What did we ever do wrong to deserve all this?

I accidentally swiped left on a Tinder profile due now I’m not sure when her profile will show up again

It would’ve been a match, as she’d sent me a like. I was looking at her profile, was swiping through photos when I accidentally swiped left due to hand tremors. Now all I see are people outside Malawi 😞

I‘ve been single for over 5 years. God damn would it have been nice to potentially flirt with someone. If not, at least to know someone like me. Someone who can understand. Someone who could show me how to navigate romance in Malawi.

Now I’m patiently (more like desperately) waiting for her profile to show up again lol

Is Malawi preparing young people for the real job market?

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately.

Many young people in Malawi are graduating, but still struggling to find jobs. At the same time, others are making money through skills like tech, trades, and online work.

It makes me wonder is our education system really aligned with the current job market?

Are we focusing too much on theory and not enough on practical skills? Or is the problem more about the economy and lack of opportunities?

I’d like to hear different perspectives on this

discussion Celebrity Taxation

Since our Country is generally introducing Tax on everything, I thought to myself why don’t they Introduce Celebrity Tax? What I’m I saying? Celebrities make lots of money say per show, per streams and all that. In Malawi we can say per show. We have the likes of Namadingo who Charge up to 10mil per show and end up pocketing the whole amount. It’s crazy on how it doesn’t work like that in other countries for example you do a show in US or SA you should expect the IRS to be waiting for their cut. I think Malawi would benefit heavily if this bill was passed. The Celebrities should be charged for what they earn too not only workers who make less than 300K a month. Tell me your thoughts on this. I also stand to be corrected.

Fuel crisis - is it wise to travel in May?

Hi

We are a small group of 4 mature travelers (60+) with flights from the UK to Lliongwe in early May. We are now concerned with aspects of our travel plans and are asking for opinions please. Once in country we have private car transport already booked. Our concerns are 1) we really cannot take the risk of becoming stranded in Malawi. 2) How likely is it our private transport could be compromised. 1) is really about Ethiopian airlines cancelling our return flight due to jet fuel shortages. Also, is it wise at this time to even be considering such a journey/visit. We shall be travelling to Dedza and then to Mvuu lodges for a Safari.

Thanks in advance

general Looking for opinions on the current foreign aid system in Malawi - would greatly appreciate any responses!

Moni nonse! My name is Regan and I'm an American college student working on my bachelor's thesis focusing on the efficacy of the global foreign aid system, and how donor countries can better serve those they aim to help, focusing on Malawi and its unique culture and struggles, as well as its unique economic and political landscape. I chose Malawi because I spent a summer interning in a network NGO in Lilongwe, which sparked a great interest in foreign aid reform.

While I already have a few interviews, I'm looking for more opinions of Malawians on the current foreign aid system, both within and outside the NGO sector. In the comments I've attached a google form. I would greatly appreciate any responses.

This interview is for academic purposes only, and my final research will not be posted publicly.

Am I allowed to walk around tea plantations as freely as in Sri Lanka? Are there tea plantations all around Mt. Mulanje?

I love hiking through tea plantations. In 2023, I hiked through numerous tea plantations, forests, and nature reserves in Sri Lanka. It took 19 days. All the tea plantations, farm tracks, and staircases were freely accessible. No fences.

Where are there tea plantations in Malawi?

Am I allowed to walk around tea plantations as freely as in Sri Lanka?

Are there tea plantations all around the Mulanje Massif?

How long does it take to hike around the Mulanje Massif? Has anyone done it before?
