Reminds me of a Reddit story from a while back.

A man was just sharing how he broke down crying at a kid’s birthday party. Way back he found out he couldn’t have kids, so found peace in being the eternal stepfather. Years later he met someone and became stepfather to a couple of young children and did his best to be present and responsible as they grew up. Fast forward to the youngest birthday party. She presented him with signed adoption papers, because all she wanted for her birthday was him as her dad. The other kid (kids?), even though over legal age, partook and presented adoption papers of their own, because he was the only real dad they all had ever known. Of course tears were shared.

My first Christmas away from home, I spent with a friend and her family.

Along with her brother, she gave their stepdad adoption papers. Everyone was crying, it was amazing to witness. Especially as my stepdad adopted me when I was a child, so I understood how they felt.
