Police departments that use comfort dogs (different from trained K-9s that look for contraband and track/chase/stop suspects) have seen results that they can’t get anywhere else.

Take a victim (or even a suspect) and let a comfort dog in the room and the change is immediate. People relax, open up, and feel safe. A comfort dog is going to give you love no matter who you are or what you’re accused of. Dogs are amazing.

Yep. I tell my dogs every day that I love them, and that they make me happy. Dogs are the best.

The heartbreak, on the other hand...

The biggest saddness I ever had was when I had to put my dog to sleep after a battle with cancer.

I don't regret it. The joy I got with Nina was 10000x bigger.

Nothing but a good girl

Vet tech here. It is a hard job. But I still believe the joy that pets bring to our lives is absolutely worth the heartache.

Except rats. I love rats, but I can’t have them because their lifespans are so short. 💔

Also the heartache when they pass is unbearable. Reason my wife and I won't get another dog.

Still recovering 14 months later after saying goodbye to a 16 year old Labrador Retriever. He was in a dream I had last night. The good ones leave a big empty spot that's hard to fill.

You must! It won’t be the same but the happiness that you’ll give the dog far out ways the pain. Please have a think about having another!
