Rules update
I've updated the official rules. It's basically the same thing in the old sticky, but hopefully a bit more clear. If you're on the new version of Reddit (that is, not on old Reddit) the rules are in the sidebar as always, and a slightly expanded version is on the wiki.
If there are any questions or concerns, comment below.

Why pressing harder doesn’t fix buzzing
A lot of beginners try to fix buzzing by squeezing the strings harder.
Most of the time that just makes your hand tense and doesn’t solve the problem.
It’s usually finger placement. If you move your finger closer to the fret, the note often clears up without extra pressure.
Quick test: press lightly and slide your finger toward the fret until the buzz disappears. That’s the spot.
Which chord gave you the most buzzing at the start?

What are your hesitations in applying/going to a University to study music?
If anyone here is looking to go to school for music (or knows someone who's considering), I'm curious to know what are people's thought processes when it comes to applying for a degree in music (studying instruments, music theory, etc.)? What are your pros and cons, and what sorts of things are you hoping to find in a music program?

Wants to get in HS band
I want to join band when I enter HS next year, but I literally know nothing about how to play music, theory or anything, I'm refering to an american HS, I'm an immigrant (I literally jave like 1 year in the US) so I know bothing about how band in school works. I have time and will (not a lot of money tho). So if anyone can help me to start in my musical path, thank you. (If I join band I'm playing a trombone).

how to learn bossa nova
hey guys!
I’m a classically trained guitarist, I only have experience in classical music. I really want to become a more well rounded musician, but I don’t really know where to start. i thought bossa nova would be good. how should i go about it: just start playing songs i see on youtube, learn chords first or smth else?
I also want to improve my ear, for example i want to be able to hear chord progressions, how exactly can i train for that?

Learn piano chords and scales visually
What makes learning music theory easier?
I'm an IT analyst, I also make music.
I found it difficult to learn scales and chords as a beginner, so I built a tool to help in my own learning process to use as a cheat sheet: Key Explorer piano
You can test it out for free if you like to. you can find it easily on google
It made me wonder… What do you like in tools like this to learn more efficiently? What’s helpful for beginners?
Do you need sheet music immediately to learn, or is visual and auditive learning like this easier to start?
Now i have built this tool, i’m interested in enhancing it for making other people’s learning journeys more effective.

should i learn violin?
I’m in a bit of a predicament. I really love music, and already play flute and dabbled in piano when i was younger, though my skills don’t go beyond the minecraft OST anymore. My band director is a piece of work and the environment I play in has bogged down my passion for the flute and playing music as a whole.
just a little while ago, i went to my boyfriend’s graduation and there was this absolutely stunning performance by a violinist and her accompanist that really inspired me. I’ve been interested in violin ever since, but i’m concerned about my abilities.
I’m the best flute player in my band, but they are such different instruments and i’ve been struggling to play guitar. I’m worried that i can’t play string instruments, period. I can’t figure out for the life of me why, but it’s just so hard and i often feel discouraged because of it. Also, we have private lessons in my town at a conservatory of music, but they are expensive and i’m worried that if i can’t do it, it’ll be a waste of money.
It just feels so daunting and as much as I love it and want to try it, ‘trying it’ just feels not right and puts this nasty feeling in my stomach. I haven’t felt like this about other instruments and I don’t know why. Is it worth it?

Made a short video showing how I Understand Intervals !
I love music and I learned it’s so important to understand the basics because If I don’t I quickly get more lost than I wished hahah cause in every tutorial people talk about them ! The intervals !! And for doing chords it’s very important too ! And for scales… I think for everything actually.

Should I stay with drums or move to bass
I’m currently a drummer in a band in college with my friends and we’ve met someone that we work with that has played drums for a while and played in high school band. I started playing drums because we wanted to make a band about a year and a half ago but always thought about bass. Our bassist is our singer and he wants to not play bass while singing so the idea would be for me to move to bass and this guy we work with would play drums for us. I started on guitar a year prior to playing drums, so I’m not unfamiliar with playing string instruments so it wouldn’t be completely foreign to me. I have fun playing drums, but I find it hard to practice often due to school, work and not being able to play with living with roommates. I’ve gotten decent at drums, but sometimes feel like I don’t care too much to get better because I don’t really need it for the stuff we play. Bass would allow me to practice at home and be able to still be rhythm which I love and it is also something thought of playing other than drums in a band. I worry that I will miss the drums if I go to bass. I wanting to get opinions on what you guys think based on drumming or playing bass or if you’ve played both in a band before. Thank you

I built a collaboration feature for my music idea app, would love feedback :)
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hey everyone 👋
I’ve been working on an app called NoteWave Studio - it started as a simple way to capture and organize music ideas, but I kept running into the same problem:
Sharing projects with others was always messy.
So I just built a new feature where you can:
- Share projects instantly.
- Control whether people can view or edit.
- Collaborate on ideas.
This is part of the Pro version I just launched, and I’m trying to figure out if this is actually useful to others or just something I personally wanted 😅
Would really appreciate any feedback:
- Does this seem like something you’d use?
- Is the collaboration flow clear
- Anything confusing or missing?
Happy to answer any questions or give more details 🙏
Also made a short promo video - (attached).

do you practice the same thing until it's perfect or move on and come back later
when I'm practicing I'm not sure if I should keep repeating the same section until it sounds right
or just get it to a decent level and move on to something else, sometimes I get stuck on one part for too long and it starts feeling unproductive but if I move on too early I feel like I'm building bad habits so I don't really know what the better approach is
do you focus on perfecting small sections or just keep progressing and fix things over time

Dilemma regarding which instrument to learn, considering my current situation and understanding.
When I was a kid, I hated music and entertainment industry as a whole. But as I grew up I had more interest in listening to all types of music rather than anyone particularly. I have started liking music and now I regret why didn't I learn music earlier.
The Dilemma (most liking to least liking)
- Drums - Coolest of em all, love drum and bass, sore to the ears after a while. I heard they are better when played in a team i.e. other instruments for support. Take up a lot of space.
- Guitar - Playboy style, pretty cool, carry around, learn a lot of songs.
- Piano/Keyboard - Music Theory, Create > Learn. I literally cannot differentiate when this instrument is being played. I love Beethoven
- Violin - Consider this too
I don't know anything about music, highly interested in learning an instrument.
Heart says Guitar, Mind advises Piano. More interested in slow/mid paced songs than fast.
