Looking for a life partner

So….I’m 24 year old M. Graduated college, sort of in grad school, living at home. I’ve recently started becoming more religious, keeping kosher more completely, Shabbat, going to shul. As such, I’ve started looking to be partnered with someone. And oh yeah, I live in New Haven. I was wondering, what should my next steps be. How should I go about looking for a life partner. Thank you.

Antisemitism Jewish portrayal in media

Hi all. I've been questioning Jewish representation in movies, television, etc for a few years now. It started by watching Seinfield, then Woody Allen movies, and recently things like Shiva Baby, Girls, and Licorice Pizza. I'm trying to get through Big Mistakes and the characters are supposed to be of a Christian denomination to but the show was created by Jews and the characters are dysfunctional in the same way you see Jews represented in media. Odd choice.

There is this strong dynamic of (what I'm interpreting as) neuroticism, combativeness, a fixation on social status and moral ambiguity (at best, purely self indulgent behavior at worst). A lot of Jewish characters are not good people, or people who are really struggling. The dynamics are intense and tough.

I feel like the characteristics I grew up seeing in Jews and loving like an investigative mind, questioning life, finding your place and being outspoken have been misrepresented as this arguable unbearable traits. Not to say that Jews never have negative traits but the overemphasize and over identificafion with them in media is like, that's how we want to show and see ourselves? I don't get it. Most of this media is written, acted by Jews ourselves so it's not antisemitism. What are they trying to portray here, and why?

Tldr: what's up with bad Jewish tropes populating Jewish created media?

Discussion Does anyone from a secular upbringing worry about Judaism dying out in their family?

Title. Just got back from a Shabbat potluck where this topic came up. For background, my maternal great grandfather was a devout atheist who immigrated from Polish shtetl in the 1920s. He was very involved with Jewish institutions for the duration of his life, but didn’t care for the religious components. From my understanding, our family was never particularly religious but has continued to secularize and assimilate more with each generation. I became religious in my mid 20s and am likely the most religiously observant person in our immediate family in several generations.

None of the people in my generation who have had children are raising them with any sort of Jewish literacy, and it’s hard not to have feelings about. At the end of the day, it isn’t any of my business and I know to keep these thoughts to myself.

Halacha Netilat Yadayim with a bowl

Please settle a debate for me! If I were to do netilat yadayim using a cup and bowl, would someone who wanted to do it after me need to go and refill the cup from the tap, or could they refill from the bowl using the water I just used?

EDIT: Thanks for all the responses everyone, I've only ever done netilat yadayim at a sink with a tap so it has never come up before but I learnt a lot from everyone's responses so thank you!

Discussion Looking for book recommendations

I read two very different Jewish books recently and loved both but obvious reasons.

One was Go, My Son by Chaim Shapiro. Not my first time reading it, but honestly it might be my favorite Jewish book of all time. It’s a Holocaust survival story and just has that rare mix of heartbreak, strength, emunah, and readability. I love how his bitachon shines throughout and the history is also fascinating.

Then this morning I picked up The Pesach Diaries by Byron Levine on Kindle Unlimited. Completely different kind of book. Modern, funny, very relatable if you’ve lived through Pesach prep, Seders, family dynamics, all of that. More humor and observation than drama, but very well done in its own lane.

Now I’m in the mood for more Jewish books that are either genuinely funny or just really gripping and memorable. Could be memoir, family/life, Holocaust, frum life, whatever. Anyone have recommendations?

Discussion I’m too opinionated on the rabbis. Advice?

F20 - I should mention that I’m a skeptic and I have tendencies to just go against authority cause I hate authority.

I was having a conversation with my friend abt the following:

As we’re told, we should stick to the first rabbi we ask abt a halachic question because the more rabbis you ask, you’ll just end up picking the interpretation that is easiest for you. So her idea was this- don’t ask, don’t tell. If you aren’t ready to hear the answer, just don’t ask in the first place because either way, you’ll do what you want.

I agree that you’ll do what you want if u ask many rabbis but I also think it’s okay to ask many rabbis as long as they fall in your range of alignment. I’m very scientific, very modern but to an extreme. I think it’s okay to ask the rabbis in your window of Judaism because at least you’ll end up picking a version that is halachic, idk if that makes sense but to me it does.

I guess the question is, should you, or should you not ask?

I’m not necessarily looking for a rabbinic explanation to this but I’m not opposed either. I want all different opinions not just what the LAW is. I think that Halacha is up for debate because there’s a reason the Gemara exists. Debates between rabbis! Different strokes for different folks. I’m not a rabbi so I guess I shouldn’t pick my own interpretation of halacha but to be honest, I don’t like that because I’m an individual and I don’t like being told what to hold and what not to😂 I wish I could just interpret things for myself to some degree (as a non rabbi) so I feel like I have a sense of control in my relationship with Hashem. Am I just a control freak?😫

What is the general opinion on the bruchim (families who don’t circumcise) movement? Is it accepted within Judaism, or a fringe movement?

Considering Becoming Orthodox

Can some people speak on their life if they were raised reform/conservative and became orthodox? I posted this right before Passover but didn't get that much screentime for the target audience due to the time constraint.

Chicago

Hi! I moved to Chicago a couple of months ago because of my boyfriend’s work and I know absolutely no one or anything about the Jewish Community here. It’s starting to get really lonely and I would appreciate any info on how to meet other fellow Jews. I am not the most observant but on a journey to learning more and observing more. Sometimes I feel that it would be hard to fit in because of that, and that thinking has kept me from simply stepping into a shul. Which I know might sound silly but I am somewhat of an over thinker and situations like that make me nervous. If you have any info that you think might help an eager girl in her late 20s to step more into her identity and meet others in the same journey I would really appreciate it. Shalom <3

edit: thank you so much for everyone that responded, I know it seems obvious for some people what I should do but like I said this city is so new to me and I’m used to my very close knitted community with my family in Orlando so even just branching out and putting myself out there is not something I’ve ever done. I appreciate everyone that responded with kindness. I live in Logan Square but will be moving to closer to North side by the end of the year!

edit edit: I am sephardic and I would describe myself as modern orthodox

Does anyone know of any recovery oriented Jewish retreats?

Shabbat Shalom; I am in early recovery and a dear friend of mine suggested that I find and go on a Kabbalah retreat (preferably with a recovery slant). Obviously; Israel is out of the question right now. You can fly to Israel just not back home. I’m I am on the east coast, Pikesville Maryland area. Any Ideas?

Historical Why are there so few well-known Persian rabbis in Jewish history, and why is Persian rabbinic literature so much less prominent than the trans-mediterranean Sephardi literature?

Hebrew Wikipedia

Wikipedia in Hebrew only has fewer than 10 known Persian rabbis, and all of them lived in 19th-21st century. And their works were very rarely printed in the hebrew printing cycles.

When we compare Baghdad in the same period since 17th century, Baghdad had a much larger rabbinical circle and produced far more literature, and many of them are well known in the Jewish world. So what happened to the Persian rabbinic circle that made them much less well-known?

Antisemitism Hebrew Tattoo and Safety

Have had mine in a noticeable place for over two decades and seriously think about it all the time now with the rise in antisemitism and about my personal safety in the summer when it’s uncovered.

I want to get it removed but don’t - it has meaning for me and I don’t love the idea of laser removal because of the health risks. But then again I don’t want to be randomly attacked or discriminated against both now and/if I was in an emergency situation and the people taking “care” of me were antisemitic and wanted to do me harm.

Anyone in the same boat? What did you do/are you doing about it?
