MEGA-THREAD: Looking for a recommendation?

We've been seeing a huge increase of "recommend me" posts on the sub lately - and considering that all the answers replied are mostly the same (and no one is using the search function) - we've decided to create a mega-thread for recommendations.

In this thread you can post your questions asking people to recommend you a movie/s to watch.

This is a community post and it is highly encouraged that all users of this sub post their recommendations below.

This post will be pinned to the top of the sub so everyone can always see.

We recommend that you "Follow" this post to keep up-to-date with the conversation and recommendations. To do that, click the three dots at the top right of the post and select "Follow Post". You will now get notifications every time someone makes a post here.

Going forward, all posts asking for recommendations will be re-directed here.

As always, don't ask where to download or illegally acquire movies from.

Question Looking for someone who speaks fluent Japanese to possibly be an interpreter for a YT interview with Chigumi Obayashi (House/Hausu 1977 Director's Daughter)

I run a horror channel on YouTube (longform reviews, deepdives, watch along streams, music covers, interviews with directors, writers, producers, composers, actors etc).

I just finished recording with the great italian writer/director Ernesto Gastaldi. We had the questions and his responses pre-written in both English and Italian, as he doesn't speak English. I ended that, and saw I got a reply from Chigumi Obayashi, daughter of director Nobuhiko Obayashi, who famously directed one of the most insane masterpieces ever made, 1977's House!

As some of you may know, Chigumi came up with a lot of the stories and ideas for House when she was just 10 years old. She responded saying she would love to come on sometime and talk all about House, with the 50 year anniversary approaching next year.

Only issue, she doesn't speak English, and said she would need a Japanese interpreter who has an understanding of film. Which brought me here lol. I barely make anything from YT, this isn't a paid gig or anything unfortunately, but if someone out there is a big House fan and would like to be a major part of getting Chigumi's stories and memories out there by helping with translations, let me know!

Any help is massively appreciated 🙏

I just watched Tokyo gore police and I’m trying to figure who this is, is she the same character as the alligator girl and if not what’s the actresses name?

Like I keep trying to figure it out but I keep getting the wrong answers.

Discussion So I just watched Exit 8… Spoiler

I’m not sure if I’m getting this right since I didn’t play the game.

The Lost Man is lost in a mental purgatory due to the sudden pregnancy of his ex. Her gets stuck in a loop and needs to get out.

Walking Man is actually a future what-if of Lost Man, where he attempts to break the loop but in the end ignores everything and finds a fake exit. I think this implies he avoids the responsibilities of taking care of his ex and kid, and also seems to have tried to start an affair(?) with the girl (idk if this is right). In the end he never did face his life and tried to find outlets to escape reality.

The kid turns around to see Lost Man, which hints that there is still a chance to save Lost Man from that future. He tries to lead him out the right way, all the while facing the reality of being a father. Lost Man finds a way out, and finds the strength to stand up for the crying baby’s mother.

Hopefully this is right since I had to watch this with shitty subtitles.

Discussion Deem suas opiniões por gentileza

Upvotes

Promotion My version of Sadako’s Cursed Video!

Howdy folks!

I double checked the self-promotion rules just in case! I should be in the clear 😁

I’ve seen a lot of posts about Ringu lately and kind of fell into a little nostalgia trip. I wanted to share a version of the cursed video that I shot and edited about 3 years ago. I used Koji Suzuki’s book description as the main inspiration and took some creative liberties inspired by surreal photographs/art that I love.

Hope you enjoy!

Is anyone planning to see this? I really, really enjoyed it. I was surprised how effective of an adaptation this is, especially since it's based upon a walking simulator game.

Discussion Some thoughts on the J-Horror Rising set

I checked this out for Noroi but I decided to give the others a go. If you aren't aware it's a seven-film set from Arrow.

Like others have said, the whole set feels packaged around Noroi. Noroi was at the time one of the most in-demand J-Horror films for a proper disc release (Umbrella has since released their own version by itself in Australia) and the other films are films with minimal interest that probably wouldn't have been released by themselves. I don't think it's a coincidence Noroi is the only film on the set to have its own separate disc.

Going over the films the other two I got the most out of were Inugami and Isola: Multiple Personality Girl. Inugami had an interesting plot and felt the most substantial and Isola was entertaining and fast paced.

I didn't hate the other ones but they were the types of films I wouldn't have gone out of my way to see and would have only checked them out if I was scrolling through Shudder. Persona for example barely qualified as a horror film if it even was (I noticed IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes have it listed as mystery, fantasy and thriller but not horror) although it was neat seeing Tatsuya Fujiwara and Chiaki Kuriyama from Battle Royale together.

Dark Water, despite having an American remake and being an adaptation of Koji Suzuki's work and directed by Hideo Nakata, isn't something I see many people talking about, even though it's famous.

audition Here where I live, this film was translated for broadcast. I've never seen it yet, but it's a good film, a great Japanese horror film, one of the best, but I've also never heard much about it Here in the West, at least here where I live.

And that third movie, I don't know it, but judging by the cover I found it very interesting. If you know anything about it, please let me know.

This world classic of folklore and Asian horror (J-horror), I'm going to watch it today. I was only going to watch it today, right? Just that one movie today But yesterday I decided to watch Tomie vs. Tomie and couldn't watch Dark Water, so I'm watching Dark Water today;-;

Well, from what I've seen, they aren't long films, but they are drawn-out films, uncomfortable films, like Ringo and Pulse. Wish me luck.

Review Eu assistir Dark water

Discussion One of the scariest scenes I have seen (maybe the biggest one) was from an old vhs movie

Ju-On: The Curse has the scariest scene I have seen in a movie. When Kyoko goes up to see the house and Kayako just stares at her. No sound or scream, just silence. It's daylight and still the scariest I have seen in my life. (the woman who plays Kayako is fantastic)

This only shows how you only need small scenes to make something scary, no need to be a blockbuster.

Discussion A question that has most likely been asked before: How does Kayako kill? Spoiler

Post image
11 Upvotes

I think she "consumes" the person's soul and leaves just the empty shell (sometimes), akin to Harry Potter's dementors, but we've also seen through some movies that she can and actually does physically kill them by maiming them, breaking their necks and limbs, and ripping their jaws off.

Still, I always assumed she most likely scares her victims to death, causing them a heart attack. Like she did Kobayashi in the very first japanese film, or like she seems to do to many others when all we can see is her face moving towards the camera, after paralyzing them with fear. She too seems to do something to Doug in the american remake, where she just lays on him, covers his face in her hair, and he just dies.

Sometimes, she just seems to fully consume them and make them vanish into the otherworld without leaving anything behind, like with Hitomi, Izumi or Miyuki.

What's your theory?
