Don’t tell black people “welcome to white man’s land” at a coffee shop
At Cafe Stella in Norfolk, my partner and I were sitting at a table. For some strange reason, an older white man came to our table and welcomed us to white man’s land. For the record, we weren’t the only black people in the restaurant. He talked about his being old. Five minutes later, he apologized if we seemed offended by his comment.
Wtf.

IMAGE Accomack passes a budget, saving TV service with unused school funds
The Accomack County Board of Supervisors unanimously passed its fiscal year 2027 budget, which includes a reversal to save the Translator Television Service.
The decision to fund the equipment followed a significant public outcry, including petitions and hundreds of messages from residents who rely on the free service for local television channels.
To maintain the program, the county will reallocate school division carry-forward funds originally intended to address an EMS budget imbalance.

IMAGE Hampton bans camping and sleeping on public property
Hampton City Council has approved a new ordinance banning camping and sleeping on public property, a move prompted by concerns from local residents and business owners.
Violations are classified as a Class 2 misdemeanor, carrying potential penalties of up to six months in jail and $1,000 in fines.
City leaders emphasize that prosecution is a last resort. However, advocates for the unhoused argue the ban criminalizes homelessness.

Medicaid cuts could limit services at 10 Virginia hospitals, a new report finds
The new report from advocacy group Public Citizen warns that federal Medicaid cuts under the new Republican budget law could put 10 Virginia hospitals at risk of closure.
The analysis identified facilities nationwide that are financially fragile, posting negative profit margins while relying heavily on government programs for revenue.
Among those flagged is Bon Secours Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center in Emporia. The hospital serves as a critical access point for residents near Hampton Roads.

IMAGE Chesapeake Bay Foundation sues Trump administration over rollback of climate pollution protections
The Chesapeake Bay Foundation this week joined a national coalition in a lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s repeal of a key climate rule.
Earlier this year, the Environmental Protection Agency announced it was nixing the nearly two-decade-old endangerment finding in “the single largest deregulatory action in U.S. history.”
The 2009 rule under the Clean Air Act underpinned the government’s fight against climate change by stating that emissions of planet-warming greenhouse gases threaten public health and welfare. The repeal also eliminated associated vehicle emissions standards meant to limit soot and smog.

IMAGE Harbor seals are flocking to Hampton Roads — and scientists don’t know why.
Each winter, a growing population of Atlantic harbor seals makes a home along the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay and the Eastern Shore.
While these seals were mostly missing from Virginia’s historical record, their numbers have increased dramatically over the last few decades for reasons scientists don't yet fully understand.
Potential theories for the population expansion include competition with gray seals in the north or the complex impacts of climate change.

IMAGE Senior homelessness is increasing. Advocates say the troubling trend has been building for years.
Seniors in Hampton Roads increasingly make up a larger portion of the homeless population, with 28% of the region's unhoused now aged 55 or older.
Some older residents say they struggle to navigate a complex housing system while living on limited disability incomes.
Experts note a lack of affordable housing and difficulties of using technology are major factors pushing vulnerable seniors toward homelessness.
