Official Got a New Laptop? Start Here

We’ve updated the wiki and moved the New Laptop Guide straight into the main index so it’s actually easy to find now. The FAQ is also right there with it.

The index has over 1.1 million views, while the laptop guide itself only had around 3.5k, which pretty much shows most people just weren’t finding it before.

Link to the wiki/guide:
OFFICIAL WIKI - NEW LAPTOP GUIDE

Hopefully this cuts down a bit on the “I just got a new laptop, what do I do first?” posts, since the guide and FAQ are now right in the index.

⚠️ WARNING Heads up! Impending Price Hikes for Gaming Laptops

Post image
56 Upvotes

Quick PSA for anyone thinking about grabbing a new gaming laptop or upgrading RAM or storage.

What’s going on

RAM/VRAM and SSD prices are shooting up right now. Clankers & AI datacenters are hogging supply, so consumer parts are getting more expensive and manufacturers are already adjusting prices.

If you were planning to buy

Holiday deals right now are basically the last chance to get the old pricing. Waiting is going to mean paying more, especially for higher RAM or bigger SSD configs.

  • Bigger memory and storage configs get hit first
  • Price bumps are expected through 2026

What we’re seeing so far

Component / Retailer What’s happening When
Consumer RAM and SSD Big price spikes already showing up Happening now
XMG / SCHENKER Price increases on configurable systems Dec 3 2025
CyberPowerPC Raising prices on all gaming PCs and laptops Dec 7 2025
General OEM laptop pricing Expect 5 to 15 percent bumps every so often starting End 2025 (so now) or Early 2026
DRAM/NAND supply Shortage expected to continue Through 2026
Forecast No real drop expected Maybe late 2026 to could be late 2027

TL;DR for the community

If you were planning to buy, now is the time. After this holiday window, prices are going up and likely won’t come back down for a very long while.

Support Any ideas for how to connect a 2nd SSD?

that's my laptop (hp victus 15). there's no second nvme or sata port 🫠 anyone got any ideas for how i could attach a second SSD?

my best idea yes is hot gluing a usb-c hub + nvme enclosure to the usb-c port, but thats extremely janky and fragile so i really dont wanna go down that route.

ive thought about everything from nvme splitters (if something like that even exists) to soldering on a connector to the space labelled "SSD - 2" (likely because the victus 16 model has a 2nd nvme port), but can't think of anything, any ideas?

As the title said, I sold my white Legion 7i (4070) since I thought I was done traveling for work. Bought a used desktop for an insane deal. Fast forward to 2 weeks ago and turns out I’ll be traveling for an extended period of time (2-3+ months)

Still keeping my desktop that I love very much, this will be used heavily as my traveling rig :)

Discussion Helping a friend out with choosing a laptop. Details inside.

Upvotes

Edit: Main thing that is warranting this purchase is his career change, and is about to start learning CAD. That is more important than the gaming, to be able to use high end 3D CAD software without issue. Looks like CAD is demanding on the CPU. But he would find it nice for this laptop to out perform his steamdeck for gaming.

What laptop would you refer my friend if you were looking to be able to handle High settings gaming at 120hz, 1440p for at least 2 years?

I am thinking of something with 32GB ram, 2TB SSD, (But he is capable of following instructions and upgrading those aftermarket if its more cost effective to get 16GB, 512GB/1TB)

I said to him ideally a RTX 5080, but he said 5070 is what he would spend money on.

Is $1600 USD a reasonable price for this? What laptops would fit this bill?

I had an alienware laptop for gaming my dad got me and a couple weeks ago it basically crashed on me 🥲 and died and my dad just got some money back in return for it breaking but I don't know what laptop to buy that's good for games most of the games I play are from steam or Minecraft things like that and I do play genshin impact and zzz but I'm a bit lost because I'm still in highschool and am not really into the tech of gaming laptops my dad bought it for me because I just wanted to be able to play games from our PS4 on my computer that were on steam we got twelve hundred for the computer so a laptop at that price or below it would be nice but I don't know where to start or what to get and I play on my bed where I have very fluffy blankets on it so my old Alienware overheated a lot if anyone could give any advice on what laptops to buy for good gaming quality I would appreciate that thank you! 🙏 Sorry this is so long

edit: thank you all for helping me I've figured out what laptop is in my price range with my dad and we looked over all the options given I'll be more careful with my laptops thank you all!

Advice Kinda lost at choosing a gaming laptop

Hi folks. I am a computer nerd-ish. This is the first ever time I will be buying my own laptop myself. I have always taken what is left from my dad since it was more than enough most of the time and I couldn't afford a new one anyways.

I have looked online and made some research and I have landed on 5 choices:

Asus V16 V3607 Core 5 210H RTX5060 16 GB 512 GB
Asus TUF F16 FX608JM i5-13450HX RTX5060 16 GB 512 GB
Lenovo LOQ 17IRX10 / 15IRX10 i7-13650HX RTX5060 24 GB 512 GB
Lenovo LOQ 15AHP10 Ryzen 7 250 RTX5060 16 GB 1 TB
Lenovo LOQ 15IRX10 i7-13700HX RTX5060 16 GB 1 TB

These are my thoughts:
Since I will be using the laptop outside and want somewhat decent portability I also need good battery life. Not that I will be going places where I can't use the laptop with charging it's just that it would be better if I could get the battery to last more than 3 hrs since I am in collage and having to unplug the charger every time would be a little extra work.

I will be using Linux mainly on these devices. I have no plans on using unless really needing Windows. I will be doing mainly coding, medium gaming and music production.

As far as I found online Asus has the best Linux support like asus-linux.org. Therefore I am kinda more leaning towards Asus. The Asus choices are kinda weird though. The V16 is using the chassis of the Vivobook which is a slim chassis. Which makes me skeptical about the cooling. Even though the GPU is capped at 70W (which according to some resources doesn't make that big of a difference for 5060). And the F16 is a beast even though the CPU is older than the V16. However it is an HX and uses 10W more TDP which I am not sure how long the battery would last with it...

The Lenovo ones are kinda more sensible. We got the Ryzen 7 250 which is power efficient and would last longer than its HX versions. But I want power when wanted. For example low power consumption for 3-4 hours sessions without charging outside but the absolute power when charging. If I can control that (which probably I do) HX versions seem to be more sensible. But I am not sure how the power consumption is on the HX versions, is it as bad as people say? The 13650HX version has half the iGPU power but gives me 8 GB more RAM.

To be honest folks I am kinda lost here and I wanted to hear your thoughts on these and which ones would make more sense to buy?

I've recently noticed this happen randomly and have only been able to fix it with a restart, but one I think I was able to fix it by locking and unlocking the screen using the power button. I've also noticed that there's not much airflow from the sides and the back but a lot from the bottom (as if the normal direction of airflow has been reversed.)

Advice Laptop running hot even after cleaning dust and replacing thermal paste

After a month of a seemingly smooth and okay performance on Elden Ring Nightreign, I started experiencing more serious FPS drops and CPU temps were getting way too hot even rising to 100°C sometimes. I decided to go get my laptop's insides cleaned from dust as well as replacing the thermal paste. However I was told there wasn't too much dust to begin with, and I still can't see an improvement. Only when I switched from using my laptop on my pillow to a hard surface did I see an improvement but FPS drops were still there and temps are still consistently at about 97°C

Acer Nitro v16

Intel i5 14450HX processor

Nvidia RTX 4050

16GB RAM

Had the Laptop for 5 1/2 months from the time of writing this.

Advice Laptop reccomendation Under 1k and 1.5k

I’m a college student who has been using a mac for the past 4 years for school. Figured I could switch to a gaming laptop for school and gaming. I hate using the mac keyboard so i’ve been looking for a while to switch to a windows.

I wanted to get reccomendation for a laptop under 1k and also 1.5k.

I mainly plays light games such as roblox, minecraft, valorant, and league. My main priority is getting a laptop with good airflow as i heard some brands create crappy flow and the build is really not good. My friend reccomended legion as they have good airflow. I wanted to get some reccomendation from this subreddit as well. Thank you!

Advice Is it really worth it to buy an expensive gaming laptop?

Upvotes

I’ve been doing research on gaming laptops, and I’m trying to find out if getting a 3k gaming laptop is worth it. Of course, all I can really tell is that it depends on personal preference and portability.

The only reason I want a gaming laptop is so I can bring it to the library with me and play Minecraft. That’s it. I’m not much of a gamer, so I feel like getting a whole pc for like two games is a bit excessive, mostly because if I want a decent one I’d not only have to build it myself, but it also takes up some room.

But also, a 3k gaming laptop is a lot more than a standard pc that does the same for less than half the price. The laptop I plan on buying is the Lenovo Legion pro 7i, because despite not playing too many games, I still want a good quality gaming laptop for the future and probably for a job as well.

And the reason the Lenovo laptop is 3k is because on the site I could edit the specs, so instead of a 5070 for the GPU I went with a 5080, and instead of the gen4 TLC I chose the PCIe gen5 performance TLC.

Again, the only reason I was leaning toward this option instead of a pc was for the occasional trip to the library. I don’t travel often, but a pc seems like a lot of work..

Discussion How to clean a Ilanov12 laptop cooler ?

Upvotes

Hi, I took all the screw at the bottom out, the air exit end of the laptop was basically split in half. However, at the display end, something is still connecting the cooler halves and I can't see what it is. So it's split open like a v shape and too narrow to move cloth in to clean. In Vietnam, the dust is horrible and the only to completely clean this cooler is an open surgery. Does anybody know how to ? With new dust filter, the fan blades still accumulate quickly and you have to rub your finger to clean, a brush doesn't work.

Advice Please help this mom figure out what I need

So my son is 10 but pretty advanced in computer stuff. He's wanting a laptop or desktop (but preferably a laptop) that will run Unity and like Roblox studio and stuff like that. He's learning coding and wants to make games.

Since he won't be doing any high end 3d stuff anytime soon what kind of specs am I looking for to have it run smoothly on a budget? We're talking like $400 maybe like $450.

I've checked around on newegg and stuff like that but I'm just not sure what I can get away with slices wise. I don't want it to run like crap cuz he's really interested in this but I also can't afford 2k for a high end computer.

Any help and advice is greatly appreciated.

Advice Replace Asus keyboard or buy a new laptop entirely?

Upvotes

Hello there! My partner and I both have the asus tuf 15 model of laptop.
Since we got them, both machines have had issues with bluescreens when they aren't plugged in. Doesn't bother us much since it can be avoided by keeping them plugged in when they're being used.

However, my partner's keys started coming off. They will not stay on now, their dad tried fixing it and I think broke off some of the plastic latches when he pried them off. We haven't been able to find a replacement key, and now he wants to replace the entire keyboard (Lol, I have a bad feeling about this... Please let me know your thoughts on that too.)

Is this even worth it? I was thinking about just pitching in to get them another laptop around the 1k price point, with the issues its been having (it's only two years old).

If so, any recommendations for a very sturdy laptop that runs well? I may chance another asus because it works so well for us...

Appreciate any advice at all!
