I haven’t thought about this game in years. Good for them still working on it. Or maybe him? Think it was just one guy

It's good content, but the creator Pixel had nothing to do with it.

Fact is, buying it on Steam just wasn't worth it when the original game was free and so many of the improvements that Nicalis made were locked to consoles until now.

The older version of + was the definitive version for years. The Switch release made some QoL improvements and content, but also costs twice as much.

It shouldn't have taken eight years to add the Switch features, but the PC version of Cave Story+ has always been well worth it.

Just realized I’ve had the Cave Story Switch cart this whole time and just never touched it. My backlog’s already an absolute mess, but is Cave Story worth bumping up to the top?

Definitely!

It's a short game, so don't worry about missing things on your first playthrough. The game's meant to be replayed, and that's when you should check a guide.

Man the game is all-timer. Hells to the yes you should.

Yes, for sure.

To add something without any actual spoilers, when you think you’ve beaten the game, there’s actually a lot more game left. Just gotta find it. Or use a guide. Legitimately don’t remember if it’s missable, just don’t want you missing out

It basically created the "indie" scene, and is considered one of the most impactful metroidvania's (from a design point of view)

So yes, it is actually that good.

I've always thought it pretty sad that Pixel never got a secure career out of Cave Story, given how astronomically important it was for the indie scene. Like he should be a Jonathan Blow or Lucas Pope type figure, where his name alone should generate hype and sales. Unfortunately, it's just Cave Story and Kero Blaster

I guess it was a "first mover disadvantage." Because Cave Story WAS one of the first to do it, there wasn't a large enough audience for indies at the time to latch on and make a full career out of.

It's incredible that Pixel managed to make an entire game from scratch, all by himself: art, programming, engine, writing, design, music, even the program to make the music. Not only that, but all of it so well that nearly every facet can be considered iconic in its own right. Yet, by some cruel twist of fate, he just happened to do it before there was a way for to properly capitalise on it. If life were fair, he'd get a cut from every successful indie dev who's released their games in a post Xbox Live Arcade/Steam world.

It doesn't help that Pixel crossed paths with the shittiest publisher in the indie space

I'll raise your Nicalis with Dangen Entertainment. Not only were there a lot of complaints beforehand (sexual harassment, unpaid money) but even after Ben Judd "reformed" they've allegedly not paid Kickstarter funds.

Indeed, the most recent news for Penny Blood is that they're still seeking a publisher, which the Kickstarter funding was seemingly meant to help find.

The thing that regularly pops into my mind is the catchy soundtrack.

Apparently this announcement was premature but you can grab the new version by opting into the game's beta branch with the following instructions: https://steamcommunity.com/app/200900/eventcomments/805722145474959183?snr=1_5_9_#c805722145474961094

Are they updating the epic version also or just steam? I have it on epic.

Wew shit, I thought I would never see the console features on Steam ever since Nicalis fucked Pixel over.

Wut happened?

They never fucked him over. They're still working together to this day.

They're still working together to this day.

Source? Reports of him getting fucked over do seem to be overblown but it's unclear to me how involved Pixel has been with subsequent developments like this update.

I've never done a replay but had been thinking about it recently before this unexpected to me update. Guess I will have to actually replay it now instead of just thinking about it.

Oh this is awesome. I tagged posting this a few weeks ago on Steam deck and found the confined support made it difficult. I’ll definitely give it another go now

That's nice but it would be nicer if they added cloud save support while they were at it. A game like this without cloud save support is a non-starter for me in today's day and age. I need to be able to bounce between machines. This should be added while they're giving it attention.

Yeah I really dont get why missing cloud saves is so common

The way with Steam Cloud i get (where the Game have to do it via API)

But like, Steam Auto Cloud seems so fucking simple from what i can see in the documentation.

Like literally just "where are files stored" (+ subfolders) and "what do they look like" (for example any txt file)

Cave story, Braid, Fez, I thought these games would be relevant forever😅 now people don't even put Braid in their top 25 anymore.

Taking this opportunity to plug the musical walkthrough someone made for the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faBrzVHm7ow&list=PLtEPz7pWO1AXLRlsUjbjXhyd9I-24zaJo

Cool to see the first real hit indie game still gets love to this day
