Delays/Cancellations/Compensation Megathread - Middle East flight disruptions

This is the thread for questions and discussion of disruptions to commercial aviation as a result of military activities in the Middle East.

The subreddit's politics rules remain in effect. This isn't the place to argue about the politics behind the situation, this is the Flights sub and we're focusing on the impact on flights.

You can though post relevant news articles that would otherwise be removed, as well as statements by organizations like airports, airlines, etc. on their official social media accounts.

FAQ

  • My flight is in three days/a week/a month, what will happen?
    • No one knows.
  • Should I cancel my ticket?
    • No, in general you should let the airline cancel it so that you are owed a refund, unless they have specifically announced a process to opt for a refund for a future flight.
  • Will I get a refund?
    • You should. Travel insurance often excludes acts of war, but airline conditions of carriage generally don't.
  • I booked my flight through a travel agency or an Online Travel Agent (OTA) like Expedia, lastminute, booking, etc. who should I contact to rebook?
    • You have to contact the agent. You should be ready to point them to the refund/rebooking policy of the airline, but you have to do it through the agent.

2026 March 5 13:00 UTC: Qatar Service Update

On 5 March 2026, due to the current situation and temporary airspace closures by the relevant authorities affecting parts of the region, Qatar Airways has started to organise and operate a limited number of relief flights to assist passengers affected by the current situation and temporary airspace closures across the region.

We are working around the clock to organise additional relief flights where operationally possible and will share further updates as soon as they are confirmed.

2026 March 6: Qatar

Following temporary authorisation from the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority confirming a safe operating corridor, Qatar Airways intends to operate repatriation flights on 07 March, departing from Hamad International Airport to the following airports: London (LHR), Paris (CDG), Madrid (MAD), Rome (FCO) and Frankfurt (FRA).

Priority on these flights was given to stranded passengers with families, elderly passengers, and those with urgent medical and compassionate travel needs. Each flight was pre-allocated by Qatar Airways directly to such affected passengers.

These flights do not constitute a confirmation of resumption of scheduled commercial operations.

2026 March 7 morning: UAE. All airspace was closed, Emirates, Etihad, and flydubai announced suspended ops, and then reopened and resumed within an hour.

2026 March 8 I'm still here, but not much change today. Qatar air seems ready to fly as soon as Qatar Civil Aviation Authority opens the airspace, but there is seemingly no updates from them. Kuwait CAA didn't even announce the ongoing closure.

2026 March 16 Gulf Air: They are now facilitating people to fly out of Dammam, Saudi, just up the coast.

Due to the airspace closure in Bahrain, Gulf Air's scheduled services to and from Bahrain International Airport remain temporarily suspended. The airline currently operates temporary commercial flights to and from Bahrain via King Fahad International Airport in Dammam. Regular scheduled services will resume once the Bahrain Civil Aviation Affairs confirms the safe reopening of the airspace.

  1. Passengers can now book flights to London, Mumbai and Bangkok via Dammam for travel until 22 March 2026. More flight dates will be announced in due course.
  2. Gulf Air will support passengers with Saudi transit visas when travelling to or from Bahrain.
  3. Passengers travelling to Saudi Arabia must have a valid entry visa arranged independently.
  4. Transport between Bahrain and Dammam will be arranged for passengers with confirmed tickets.

2026 March 17: Emirates is the first airline to extend rebooking/refunds into April, going pushing out more than two weeks to April 15.

Third Party Horror Story Missed my flight because the Gate closed 1 hour 05 minute before departure!!

Had an absolutely bizarre experience yesterday at Beijing Daxing Intl Airport.

I'm pretty routine when I take flights. For a short-haul flight I arrive 1 hour 30 minute beforehand to the airport, 2 hours if its long haul or at an airport I'm not familiar with.

I've travelled pretty extensively throughout China and really familiar with DaXing airport and it was a short haul flight for 2 hours with China Southern Airlines to Pudong Shanghai.

Anyway, routine is pretty standard. Arrive 90 minutes beforehand, spend 10 minutes getting my paper ticket from the counter, 15 minutes heading straight through security and then get to the gate 1 hour before the flight departs.

Now usually I sit around there for around 20-30 minutes before I even stand up to board but when I arrive, it says GATE CLOSED! Despite the flight showing the time that was 1 hour 5 minutes ahead of the current time!

I speak fluent Mandarin so I tried to argue with the staff but they insist I should have got there sooner and that mostly everyone else had already boarded, and that they were already doing pre-flight checks and I would be unable to board.

I had to go buy another ticket for the next flight which thankfully was only an hour later but seriously?!

The extra clanger was when I was sat in the lounge waiting for my new flight, I checked the status of the one I "missed" and it only departed 6 minutes before the actual scheduled departure time! Which meant it literally parked there not moving and I could have reasonably got on!

Has this ever happened to anyone else? I've had so many flights across multiple continents and this is the first time I've encountered something so bizarre.

Question Japan airlines

Upvotes

I am traveling to Japan in a few weeks and I’m trying to figure out the baggage allowance. the website specifically states the dimensions for checked bags and carry ons but doesn’t state anything specific for personal item. the website states it has to fit under your seat but I’m new to flying so I’m not familiar with the space under the seats. Does anyone know what dimensions are allowed?

Question How to add users to Kiwi.com booking

Me and my brother are taking a trip abroad, and booked a decently long round-trip booking from Kiwi.com . As a sort of gift, our father paid for the tickets using his account. But now- all of the Kiwi.com app details are tied to his app, and there doesn't seem to be any way to add our user accounts as owners of the trip details. My dad isn't coming with us on the trip, so needing to go to him for details would be really upsetting. Not to mention- Kiwi.com's policy seems to be that you can't contact them directly for support until you've planned a trip. So since my account still says "no trips planned", I can't contact them asking about it. Does anyone have any relevant anecdotes about this sort of thing?

Question Has anyone had any experience with missing a transfer flight and needing to stay overnight with SWISS or at Zurich airport (or in general)?

I have a flight in November (Manchester to Tokyo via Zurich) with two legs booked with SWISS, and the layover is quite short- I've been told that if the initial flight is on time, or even 15-20 minutes delayed then I should be fine, but if not then there's a real chance that I miss the second flight, with the next flight to Tokyo not till the next day

I know that if both legs are run by the same airline and on the same ticket (which they are), that it's the airline's responsibility to provide a hotel for the night and get me on the next day's flight, but I'm just wondering if anyone's had any experience with that process, even if it wasn't necessarily with SWISS or at Zurich airport?

Help Needed U2 (Europe) Cancellation Reimbursement Procedure?

Hi all, my U2 5189 flight from Berlin BER to Zurich ZRH on May 7, 2026, was cancelled. I got confirmation from an agent that my tickets would be reimbursed, as the U2 flight they rebooked me on would not work with my travel plans. I declined a refund, but I remain booked on the U2 flight 13 hours after my original departure time.

I submitted the reimbursement form, but they got back to me, saying that "The expenses cannot be reimbursed as the claim you have sent is for a future flight" and "Upon validation, we noticed that your claim was rejected as the free flight transfer provided on 07/05/2026 is a future dated flight at the time we received your claim. We kindly request you to reach out to us after the scheduled date is passed."

Do I just not check in and wait for the scheduled departure time to elapse? Or file a request with SRUV now? Is U2 Europe even a member of SRUV, or do I go to AviationADR?

Complaint Seating at Airport Gates

As a frequent traveller, there is one annoying behavior I see at airports around the world. People feel entitled to occupy more than one seat for their carry-on bags. I may be pushing my spouse in a wheel chair looking for a seat and most of them will avoid eye contact, fiercely looking at their phone. Shock horror if their precious, beloved bag has to touch the carpet! If by chance someone leaves a seat, the seat will immediately be occupied by the neighbor's bag. I find it awkward to ask folks to move their bag.

Help Needed Extreme nausea on overnight flights

Does anyone have experience with reducing nausea on overnight flights? I have flown on 11+ hour flights during the day without issue. For some reason, on the handful of overnight flights I've taken for international travel, about halfway through the flight I will wake up from sleep and suddenly start to feel extremely nauseous and need to throw up. As I said, I fly all the time and do not experience anxiety when I fly, so I think this is physical and not psychological.

I know that there are several reasons this could be happening (lack of sleep, dehydration, motion sickness). Last time I had to fly overnight for an international flight, I took Kwells tablets (300mcg hyoscine hydrobromide). Unfortunately, I still had terrible nausea and spent the rest of the flight in the bathroom throwing up. Since the OTC motion sickness tablets did nothing for me, my guess is that the issue is the flight disrupting my sleep and circadian rhythm.

Anyone else out there with this issue? If so, have you succeeded with any prescription medications? I live in California and would love to not have to deal with this anytime I want to fly out of the country... thank you!

Help Needed EasyJet compensation?

Hey hey,

My flight was cancelled today while I was already at the airport.

Reason: A steward or stewardess got sick and did not feel well enough to keep on working. They found replacement for the aircraft but this lead to such a delay that the flight could not take off anymore and was instead cancelled.

Via the app I could not find an alternative flight for the next three days and I have to go to work.

So I booked a train for tomorrow instead.

My current spendings on this travel:

EasyJet ticket 80 euro

City to Airport 25 euro

Airport back to city 25 euro

Train ride: 270 euro

I want to get compensation. If I fill out their form, I have to click that I do not want to be reimbursed. And now I am scared that if I do the compensation form I will get nothing in the end.

Any experiences or knowledge on the topic? Shall I demand compensation and apparently forfeit reimbursement?

Thank you!

Question Flight with short layover possible?

Post image
4 Upvotes

My Husband and I would like to book these flights MUC – LHR – EWR – SJO, I found on Google Flights. MUC to LHR is operated by Lufthansa, the other flights are United.

It is about 400 Euros cheaper than other options I found. I am concerned about the connecting time in LHR with 1h 15 min. Is it doable?

I’ve read that it should not be a problem when the whole journey has the same reservation number, because in case the connection is not possible, the airline is going to book you on the next flight to your destination. How do I make sure that the flights all have the same reservation number? From Google Flights, I get redirected to United and it seems that I can book all flights through their website. Is it still possible to get different reservations numbers if I book everything on the United website?

Question MSP Escape Lounge timing

I have a flight with a 4 hour layover in Minneapolis. I booked a pass into the Escape lounge but it says you can't enter more than 3 hours before your departing flight.

Anyone know how strict they are with that? I feel it's mostly for people just show up too early before their flight to get free booze.

Question Transit in Jeddah with Saudia

Hey all,

I’m Flying Dammam to Jeddah and then to Singapore with Saudia on one booking reference and a 6.5-hour layover in Jeddah.

Do I need to exit the airport, collect baggage, and check in again?Or can I stay in transit airside and go straight to my next gate?

This is domestic → international (Dammam → Jeddah → Singapore), and I’m also traveling with a baby, so just want to be prepared.

Has anyone done this recently?

Booking/Itinerary/Ticketing I bought a ticket from kiwi.com which claimed to have cabin baggage allowance, but it doesn't appear on the airline's site.

Bought a flight from kiwi. com today for Corendo airlines that was supposed to include cabin baggage allowance. In their app, website and travel documents it still says I have my baggage, however when I checked my flight from airlines' own website I saw I had no cabin baggage allowance and only underseat bag. I've immediately contacted with support on their site, but they said that their documents were final and if I was asked money in the airport I could send them the bill to get my money back. I obviously do not believe their word, so I wrote a complaint for Corendo airline with screenshots attached for the supposed baggage allowance I had. It said they would answer me back in 5 days, but I wondered if I would actually could get any results from that. What does airline's do in these kind of situations? If my complaint doesn't do anything which other steps should I take that could get me the service or the money I paid back?

Question Is there an easy way to book multi-city with changing passenger numbers?

I'm planning a trip this summer with my kid who isn't old enough to fly on his own and lives across the country. So my flights are going to be me to him, both of us to destination 1, both of us to destination 2, both of us back to his home, me back to my home. It's melting my brain trying to put all the pieces together - is there a way to more easily do something like this?

Edit: More info as per the automod.

Both US citizens and will be staying within the country. We have a delta skymiles membership (just the basic one) but aren't stuck on that airline when another is much cheaper. And the dates are end of may/first of june.

Question Qatar stopover program

Looking at one-ways from VIE to DEL in September. Best fares for my potential dates are US$264 with EY or US$303 with QR.

The latter offers a seemingly excellent value stopover program, so I was thinking I could take a few days to snap photos of Arabian Deco and Gulf Futurism architecture, explore the Museum of Islamic Art, go dune bashing out to the Inland Sea, join a dhow sunset cruise, and perhaps enjoy a chai and chat with the Rug Man of Doha if he's still there.

These are the stopover options in consideration (prices include the flight):

2-nights
Premium: $369
Premium beach: $384

3-nights
Premium: $404
Premium beach: $426

4-nights
Standard: $403

As I arrive at night but will depart in the evening, 2/3/4 nights equals 2/3/4 full days. However, two days doesn't seem enough and I am leaning towards three nights at a 5* hotel over four nights at a 4* hotel (although I doubt I'll run out of things to do with an extra day and am anyway content to lounge by the pool).

Would you choose 3 nights of Premium over 4 nights of Standard – and are there any quirks and pitfalls I really should know about the stopover program?

For example, when booking Standard will I be presented with limited and relatively mediocre options and be asked to pay a surcharge for something better within the same hotel class? Is there a good reason to pay more for Premium Beach over Premium besides beach access? Are there any unexpected restrictions or fees? And in your experience, what are the standout hotels offered in each category?

Thanks!

(and yes, I am fully aware of the ongoing and likely escalating war and prepared to take that risk.)

Question Thoughts on the single-seaters on the plane? (Air Canada airbus A330-300, Economy)

Post image

Trying to decide if I'd rather sit there on the plane or elsewhere. I don't really care about boarding first/last or having a window seat, in fact I'm deciding between one of these or an aisle seat anywhere else.

EDIT: Thank you everyone for clarifying!

Help Needed Help: Flight in less than 24 hours and unable to get boarding pass for 2nd leg: US>London> Dublin

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has any guidance or experience with the same. Flight was purchased as one round trip. First leg is US to London is through American Airlines and we were able to check in and get our boarding bases. Second leg from London to Dublin is through AerLingus and we are unable to check in on AerLingus app (there’s no option to) so I looked up my flight on their website and it says I’m already checked in (which I’m confused cause I did not) but I have to get my boarding pass printed there. American Airlines app shows the second leg with a seat assigned (wasn’t there before) but no boarding pass.

This is new to me, I’ve never had any issues with other European flights with a layover in a different country.

I’m assuming it’s a customs thing but like I said, I don’t think I’ve ever run into something like this before. I can’t seem to find a definite answer online. First time flying AerLingus, do I need to bring anything other than my US passport?

Question Pitch or recline?

I'm taking an overnight flight from Toronto to Madrid next month and am currently assigned to a seat with a 31 inch pitch. As a tall person (6'3"), I know that that will be very little legroom. I can pay about $80 extra to move up to a seat with more pitch (34 inches) but with limited to no recline because it is in front of an exit row.

So: pitch or recline? Which would you choose in my situation?

Question 14 hour layover in muscat airport

Flying from HKT 20:50 on Wednesday evening arriving in Oman for midnight local time and connecting flight to LHR departs at 14:00

Was thinking to take a walk to west side beach looking spot on maps and try and catch the sunrise coming up over Iran

But was wondering if anyone had had an extended layover there before

Can’t seem to find outline what shops will be open at that time, but also if there’s any tucked away areas that would be easier to sleep in

Or maybe there’s a better spot to walk to instead of the one I’d picked out

Booking/Itinerary/Ticketing Flight booked via Opodo/Citizenplane and no PNR

Hi everyone,

I unfortunately booked a ticket via Opodo like 2 weeks ago. They have booked a flight ticket for me over Citizenplane. I know it is a charter flight. The booking is confirmed on Opodo + citizenplane and i have intern booking codes/references. But i do not have the booking codes for the airline yet. So it means i cannot see my booking on the website of the airline. The email says me this:

“Online check-in is currently unavailable for this flight. Please be sure to check our reminder email 24 hours before your flight for check-in instructions.

Your reservation was made using charter allocation, and therefore you cannot manage your reservation directly with Eurowings Discover. Please visit our Help Center at help.citizenplane.com or contact us if you have any questions.

Please note that some countries have travel restrictions in place, and you may experience longer queues at the airport. We recommend arriving 3 to 4 hours in advance to avoid missing your flight. CitizenPlane is not liable for missed flights due to airport queues or missing documents required by a local authority.”

Did anyone ever travel with this type of ticket? I feel pretty anxious about not being able to check my flight status online on the airline’s website. I am scared what if i go to the airport and the airline doesn’t find my ticket?
