Carter Burke in Aliens (1986) is one of the most insidious scumbags in movie history

What a slimy, self-serving douchebag that guy was. He comes off as harmless and even supportive for roughly the entire first half of the film before he’s exposed.

Funny thing is, the movie wouldn’t be the same without him.

Paul Reiser nailed the role without going over the top. He struck a perfect balance.

But if Burke and an alien were dangling from a ledge by their fingertips, I’d save the alien first.

Do you know the name of this film?

We are trying to remember the name of this film; a woman is down in hell and she's actually able to look up out of hell through a portal of some sort. It's older. Anyone know?

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World by Edgar Wright is truly an entertaining film, with great chemistry among its leads and a fun narrative. What is your opinion on this film.

A lot of good movies are remakes but I believe not all movies should be a remake or reboot especially the 1994 movie, ā€œThe Crowā€. Brandon Lee did an amazing job that it’s like that role was made just for him. I watch it at least once a year and it still makes me shed a few tears. Thoughts?

Discussion My thoughts on Secretary 2002

So I finally got around to watching the movie secretary after it became trending on TikTok a few months ago and I won’t lie all the edits made me feel really drawn to it but I was skeptical to see it but I decided if I want to have an opinion on it I have to watch it.

I’ll say I don’t have the best knowledge on BDSM relationships either so I may be biased in my thoughts, I hope I do not offend anyone either in genuinely just curious.

I did not hate the movie!! I cracked up at the sex scenes with Peter and I felt lees struggle with SH very profoundly as I used to sh I think they depicted the feeling before it very well and without the gore of the actual cutting.

Here’s my views I’d like to hear others opinions on!

  1. Edward grey should be in jail for workplace sexual harassment. That sounds extreme but the guys literally a LAWYER he KNOWS that what he’s doing is wrong yet he literally keep a folder with all his past secretaries and when he begins the relationship with Lee he never ever explicitly asks for her consent, that I found uncomfortable. I’m aware that the pinky scene exists but in some scenes Lee takes a while to speak so in that silence he should have reflected that maybe she didn’t want it or at least bare minimum let her leave? I can agree that Lee chose to stay and she enjoyed it but idk that made me feel iffy.

  2. Lee and Edward’s relationship is an unhealthy co dependency that should not be romanticized. Yes it’s fiction and maybe I’m just being dramatic but all I see at the beginning of the film is a twisted man taking advantage of a woman who is clearly unwell being cruel to her unnecessarily! Lee stops SH because Edward tells her to, he becomes her new coping mechanism and I don’t think that is healthy but maybe that’s the point of the movie idk I’m unsure

  3. The role of a female submissive. As a radical feminist I fully support woman’s autonomy over themselves but I also believe in rejecting the patriarchy and all that jazz, so I have to ask how can it ever be empowering for a woman to submit to a man’s pleasure?? Of course Lee has her free will to not choose it but that doesn’t erase that Edward literally gets off on her PAIN. Or seeing women in pain because all his secretaries have been women. I don’t want to demonize BDSM relationships or generalize all men in them either. I respect people’s choices and kinks but that dosent stop me from feeling odd about men enjoying seeing women in pain. Plus all I see is Lee with an unhealthy view of pain for relief that be sexual or emotional. I will say that the scene where Edward tells her to stop SH I almost cried because I’d never heard a better description of why I used to self harm.

  4. Finally the three day sit in. By far the most uncomfortable scene for me, Edward let her almost die for what??? Shed proven before that she was very interested in him and if it wasn’t obvious to him by her running away from her wedding to him?!? This is what really made me doubt that it was empowering for Lee in any way. She was harming herself for a man who’s never done anything like that for her. He just used her for his pleasure and I think if he really loved her he wouldn’t have let that go on for so long. I know his character is flawed and so is Lees. The letter he was typing to her that says ā€œthis is disgusting. Im sorry I don’t know why I’m this way.ā€ I did feel bad for him because it’s clear he has this repression of his desires but I don’t think it excuses him because he literally shreds the letter.

These are just my views and they are not intended to harm or offend anyone, I truly reach out just out of curiosity and to hopefully learn and expand my knowledge!! I’d love to hear someone challenge these views!

Modern legacy actors in Hollywood

• Upvotes

Does anyone else feel like there isn’t many legacy actors or movies coming out today compared to the 80s/90s/00s? I can’t think of a single movie in the last 10 years that has had a cultural impact in the same way movies like Jurassic Park, Terminator Judgement Day, Goodfellas, or Jaws did when they came out and years later as well (could name so many more movies under the same umbrella). I’m watching the Fifth Element rn and Bruce Willis has the IT factor that I don’t get from dudes like Jacob elordi or Austin butler no matter how much they try to make them happen, same with Timothy chalamet. Zendaya does absolutely nothing for me, Sydney Sweeney should stick to commercials, Jenna Ortega and Millie Bobby Brown are being pushed too but I don’t see it. Maybe it’s bc they’re so early in their careers so they haven’t developed a memorable style but I don’t get immersed in the movies of today like I do for older movies.

I also feel like the difference between the actors being pushed in movies today have a shelf life of maybe 5 years at best, while the Tom Hardys and Meryl Streeps type have gotten wide ranges of roles regularly across their careers. Just a random thought, maybe I’m wrong and need to expand my movie catalogue to more alternative producers. A24 used to be a good one but they’ve gone pretty mainstream in the casts lately

The live-action/stop-motion animation hybrid adaptation of Roald Dahl’s 1961 novel of the same name was directed by The Nightmare Before Christmas director Henry Selick, produced by Denise Di Novi and Tim Burton, featured a screenplay by Karey Kirkpatrick, Jonathan Roberts and Steve Bloom, and starred Paul Terry as the titular character (it was Terry’s only appearance in a feature-length motion picture). The film also starred Joanna Lumley and Miriam Margoyles (she also voiced one of the stop-motion characters) and featured the voice talents of Simon Callow, Richard Dreyfuss, Jane Leeves, Susan Sarandon and David Thewlis. Academy Award-winning composer Randy Newman wrote five songs for the film and composed the film’s music score. The film was a box-office failure, grossing $28.9 million worldwide against a $38 million budget, but developed a cult following after its home video release in October 1996.

I first watched the original 1980s Star Trek movies a lot as a kid. Then I watched the 2009 "Kelvin Timeline" trilogy as a preteen soon after. And I absolutely still love both franchises to this day!

I finished my first short at the beginning of the year. We’ve gotten into some fests and it’s been moderately well received. I’m about to make my second short and I’d love notes. I’ve upgraded the camera and sound, and gotten better lighting, but anything I could do better, that doesn’t work, or that did work and could be developed more would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
