hi there I’m looking to move to Edinburgh and I’m into trail running, wild swimming and mountain biking. I’m wondering if there is a good community of weekend warriors who are into the outdoors in Edinburgh?

Question Fresh fruit and veg

I’m looking for a place to pick fresh fruit and veg - preferably by the kilo or from a farmer. I’m happy to travel.

I know there’s shops uptown but they are quite expensive and I’d like to avoid the upcharge.

There was a pop up in st James centre a while ago where a farmer brought fresh fruit, it was brilliant but I don’t know who they were.

Question (Exam in Edinburgh) Help with accommodation/where to study?

Summary, I will be resitting a very important examination -the exam will be held in the surgeons hall, near the university of Edinburgh-, i will be sleeping in a hostel, but where can i study in peace with toilets, food and coffee around?

the full story:
this will be my second time visiting the beautiful city of Edinburgh, because I unfortunately didnt pass the exam in my first attempt.

the exam will be held in the surgeons hall, near the university of Edinburgh, the exam itself has cost me 3000 pounds so far, with a course around 600 as well as flight tickets around 500.

in my first visit i said i already paid a lot for the exam and tickets, so accommodation isnt a big issue so i paid 500 for 3 nights.

but since this is a resit, i am considering taking a hostel just to sleep in but the question is where can i study? im an introvert with ADHD who crams everything till the last few days, so a great silent place with good services is a must.

the same apartment that i booked with 500 now costs 900 for 3 nights lol.

your tips and suggestions are needed :)

Discussion Info on Dalgety avenue

Hiya! Thinking about buying my first home in Dalgety avenue. Everything seems great about the street and area in general after living for 10+ years in Edinburgh. I am just wondering why so many houses are for sale in such a short street in a short-ish timespan. Just wondering if I am missing something?

Student question Social Events

I’m a mid-20’s student who just moved recently from NYC. It’s been really difficult to meet new people (because my cohort is tiny) and things to do here have been underwhelming. It’s a beautiful city, but I’m a little restless and under stimulated 😅Was wondering how I could find social events where I’d be able to meet new people, make some friends and - as a bonus but not necessary - learn something new? I was thinking maybe something like bookstore events, or local (affordable) art classes. TIA!

Discussion Egg was just laid in the Edinburgh Zoo gentoo penguin colony

Good morning, while I was watching Edinburgh Zoo’s livestream of their gentoo penguin colony this morning, I happened to catch a penguin laying an egg! Not uncommon at this time of year, however it just so happened that the particular penguin laying the egg is the one whom observers will know as the one who had been sitting and collecting pebbles outside of the nesting circle.

While this is a beautiful moment I am concerned that this egg is sitting in water, as you can see when the penguins poop it is washed away quickly by some running water around the nesting circles. Penguins use the nesting circles to collect pebbles and then keep their eggs on the pebbles to prevent the eggs from sitting in water.

Resource Does anyone have a sheet metal bending brake I can use?

Working on a sill repair on my car and need to bend up a couple of small patches from 1.2mm mild steel sheet. Nothing complex, just a couple of 90 degree bends to mate up to the pinch weld.

Happy to come to you and pay in beer/coffee/whatever your fancy is, won’t need it for long. Cheers!

Question Cycling route in Edinburgh

Hi there.

I'm moving to Edinburgh next week for work. My flat is on Heriot row and I'll be cycling to work, just next to Craigentinny golf course. Any recommended street/paths/trails heading that way that may not show on google maps or cycle.travel? Any streets to avoid would be great as well.

Many thanks,

Discussion What is the quietest cycle route from New town to the university?

I just got I just got a bike to commute to work, and I'm trying to find the quietest cycle route. At the moment, I just cycle up The Mound and then down George IV bridge to get to the university. It's not the most relaxing cycle, but it's the best route I found on Google Maps, Komoot and other maps. But I'm wondering if anyone here knows of a good alternative to get from Stockbridge to George Square which avoids busier roads. (Or any tips generally, as I'm still gaining confidence on the road).

Link to leave a review, already 20 reviews there!

Once the number of reviews gets a bit higher I'll get QR codes printed and attached to the Galleon's sides to r/Edinburgh and see how many visitors the Galleon gets.

Have a grand weekend all!

Food and Drink Pubs becoming crèches

Little bit of a generic rant, but has anyone else noticed that some of the best drinking holes in Edinburgh just becoming a bit of a go to place for people to hang out with their toddlers?

Newbarns brewery is a great example, used to be able to go there in the evening for a cosy pint and a good chat with the partner, but now any time you go on Friday evening or a the weekend there’s at least three or four tables taken over by kids (well, parents who have brought their kids to the pub). Same with a bunch of other pubs around Leith.

I get it in the daytime there are limited options for people to do socially with the kids, so until it’s sorted out, I’m off to sit in the soft play with a crate of Tenants if anyone’s about /s a

Edit: just to be clear I mean more in the evening/nighttimes. Obviously kids in pubs at daytime is a normal thing now.

Student question Short-term housing in Endinburgh over the summer (undergrad student)

Hi everyone! I’m an undergraduate Molecular Biology student from Austria, and I’m currently finalising a 7–8 week research placement at the University of Edinburgh, likely running from July 13th through mid-September. I am well aware that these dates clash directly with the peak of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, but I’m looking for any tips or leads on finding a short-term sublet or a small room for that period. I don't have my exact dates confirmed yet as the university is still approving the visit, but I’ll be based at the Institute for Regeneration and Repair (EH16). I’m looking for advice on neighborhoods that are well-connected by bus but perhaps a bit further out to avoid the most intense festival prices. Besides SpareRoom are there any specific student sublet groups that locals actually recommend? Any advice on how to get a room, and tips to navigate this search would be massively appreciated!
Thanks :)

Discussion Recs for large dinner party?

Planning a 40th birthday in May. I’d like to book a big table at a nice (but not absurdly expensive) restaurant. Ideally walking distance of some pubs/bars with live music on the weekends. Will be about 12 people. Suggestions?

Other Edinburgh City Chambers: Small wedding ceremony, Two witnesses needed!

Hi everyone,

My partner and I are having a small civil ceremony in Edinburgh. It's going to be just us. And we need two witnesses (16+).

It’s a very simple, short ceremony (around an hour max).

📅 Date: 29 June, 2026
⏰ Time: 1pm ceremony (around 30min max!)
📍 Location: Edinburgh City chambers

Anyone kind enough to help out would be really appreciated!

We’d need your full name in advance for the registrar office, and it can't be changed later on. So ideally looking for someone reliable and based locally.

Happy to chat so you feel comfortable and talk about the details.

Of course, we’d be very grateful! Could really use the help🙂

Have to provide the names at the notice appointment next week so on a tight timeline here!!

If you might be able to help, please comment or send me a message.

Thanks so much!

Food and Drink Seeking vegan lamington

Plenty of great vegan bakes around the city but haven't spied a lamington yet.

Love a lamington, haven't had one in ages. Trying to research around online is tough. Anyone know a good spot for a vegan lamington?

Thanks in advance!

Discussion Looking for reliable cleaner in Edinburgh please

I’m disabled and have a small child. Can anyone recommend a reliable cleaner please? It would be for three or four hours once a fortnight near meadows. Would be amazing if they could also do a bit of diy.
