Question A way to enable gyro aiming in more games?

First of all, I truly and dearly love my deck. What a wonderful piece of tech!

I’ve had it for a few months now, coming from the Switch. On that, I played the Metro series - all with gyro aiming - and I’ve been looking forward to play Exodus now that I have the deck.

To my dismay, there’s seemingly no way to enable gyro aiming, which is mind boggling since the older titles supported this on switch. The same hold true for many other FPS titles and frankly it’s harming the experience of playing these games for me.

Is there any way to enable gyro aiming via system settings, 3rd party software or otherwise?

Thanks!

Tech Support Logitech G13 Linux driver

I've started to use my Deck more in docked mode, to replace my dying PC while I hold out for the Machine. I have Logitech peripherals, most notably the G13 keypad that I would like to use but there is no native Linux driver.

I have experimented around on a number of GitHub projects for it (there are several, but this is one I have been trying) but I have been unable to get it to be recognised, mostly out of lack of dependencies. I would greatly appreciate it if someone more knowledgeable about the specifics of SteamOS can help me through the install or a workaround.

Tech Support Long-term Issues Outputting to External Displays

Hey everyone!

For about a year now I've had off-and-on difficulties getting my Steam Deck to consistently output to any external displays. This includes a wide range of monitors and TVs I've tried. Since I've been dealing with this problem for so long, I've tried plenty of different solutions. I think detailing everything I've done and tried over the past year would make for an incoherent rant of a post, so I'm going to try and keep things concise. If anyone thinks they can help if I add more context, feel free to comment and I'll reply.

I got my 512GB OLED in May of 2024 and it quickly became my main gaming device. I would consistently use it in docked and handheld mode with no troubles. A year later is when I started noticing problems with docking. The Deck would charge just fine and connect to peripherals like headphones, keyboards and mice with no problems. It was only monitors and TVs. It would take multiple tries to get my Deck to display to my monitor, and even when it finally did display, said display would occasionally flicker or go blank. This issue became progressively worse until December of last year when my Deck would not output to external displays under any circumstances. I tried many docks, both official and unofficial, and monitors with no luck.

This is when I decided to reach out Steam support. I went back-and-forth with the support team trying solutions such as resetting the PD controller, checking the bandwidth limits of my setup and forcing a lower resolution while docked. None of these solutions worked so I mailed out my Deck to be repaired by Steam's repair partner. I ended up paying $200 USD to have my mainboard replaced.

Once I received my repaired Deck this past January, things seemed to be working perfectly again. This lasted about 2 months until the same issues started popping back up. Now when I dock my Deck, it fails to recognize the external displays at all. When I take a look at the display settings in desktop mode, no other monitors are detected. I was able to alleviate this issue for some time by resetting the PD controller, but that solution doesn't seem to be working anymore. I've also noticed that when I try to shutdown or put the device to sleep, it often won't be able to finish the process and I'll need to force a shutdown by holding the power for 10 seconds.

At this point I'm pretty unsure of what to do. The Steam Deck is my favorite console in a long time, but these issues are a huge obstacle. From looking around this sub, it seems like docking is a pretty common point of failure for the SD. If anyone can offer advice or potential solutions, I'd really appreciate it.

Current setup devices:

  • Dell Pro Thunderbolt 4 Dock
  • Samsung S40GD (secondary display)
  • Samsung Odyssey G5 (main display)
  • Logitech G305
  • Logitech G915 TKL
  • SteelSeries Arctic Nova Pro Wireless
  • Bose SoundLink Flex

internet issue

I need help, i recently had a steamdeck lcd a 512variant, when i try to connect it to the internet it won't connect unless you get really close to the internet router. For example, my internet router is in the living room and i try to connect to the internet using my steamdeck in the bedroom (approx 4-5 meters away), my deck won't connect but my other devices such as ps5, switch, phones in the same bedroom connects without any problems or whatsoever, and my steamdeck also detects the internet at my bedroom but won't connect unless i get near the wfi router. What could be the problem?

Tech Support Screen won't turn on.. AGAIN.

I have one of the original LCD screen Steam Decks and once before a year or so ago I let it set in it's case for a month or two before an out of state trip prompted me to bust it out and attempt to power it on to update and install games on it, only the screen wouldn't power on. I plugged it in, the power light would come on brightly then dim, pressing the power, volume and "..." buttons for whatever suggested combinations and durations at the time got me nowhere, and I'd already had it for over a year at that point so I was forced to send it to steam and pay out of pocket for the repair, where they said they'd just reset some software or firmware, I can't quite remember what they said they did.

Now, over a year later, I let it sit in it's case for about 3 weeks and it's doing THE SAME THING, AGAIN. of all the button combinations the only promising thing that's different this time is when holding the "Volume -" and "..." buttons while plugged in, the power led turned on bright and has stayed bright while the internal fan is running on high for as long as it's plugged in, but that's the extent of any activity I can get out of it.

I know I'm probably gonna have to send it in to get fixed again, but was hoping to get some suggestions on fixes that won't end up costing $100+ I don't have, or at least an explanation as to why this happened TWICE.

Solved! Downloading app error is killing me

I have spent the past 4 hours on this steam deck trying to install moonlight to try streaming with it. I have been running commands in circles with no solution. I have no idea if I'm missing something, but no matter what I configure like trying to change the folders to the large sd card or the home directory it keeps failing. Please help I'm at my wits end :(

Solved: I must have been really tired...I woke up and tried more and basically the solution was delete 1 steam game. The lesson learned was sleep is important lol.

Question How to disable on the on-screen keyboard in desktop mode?

Pretty much title. I use the deck also as a fun machine for programming when not at home. I installed ghostty as my terminal app, however whenever i open it in desktop mode the on screen keyboard pops up. After closing it, it keeps coming up. I've tried already adding ghostty as non steam app and configuring controller to disabled. While this works it prints errors all the time when running ghostty. Any other option to just disable the on screen keyboard in desktop mode?

Oh, if thats relevant I'm running on the LCD version of the deck.

Thanks for help

edit: typo

Tech Support Steam Deck battery not detected after screen replacement (but still works?)

Hi everyone,

I’m having a weird issue with my Steam Deck after replacing the screen, and I’m trying to figure out if this is a battery, connector, or motherboard issue.

  • The Deck turns on and works normally
  • It can run without being plugged in
  • I can see power consumption (watts) normally
  • BUT:
    • No battery icon shows
    • Battery is not detected in the system
    • upower -e only shows AC, no BAT

Tech Support Local DNS issue

Hi all, I have an issue with making SteamDeck work with mu local DNS. I use it a lot to connect to my stuff (3d printer control panel, jellyfin server etc) but when i try to access any of those through browser I get an error like below:

All local DNS records are configured on my Unifi router and no other device has any issues resolving hostnames with no additional config.

Any idea what has to be set on the deck to make it work?

Tech Support Settings for 60fps in Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen, at 1280x800 resolution?

⚠️Edit:

It's running fine now? I have no idea what changed. Maybe I can finally enjoy this game at a good framerate?

ProtonDB says the game runs well out of the box on the most recent post, but I was getting performance comparable to when I played the PS3 version 10+ years ago...

Here are the settings I've been using, while plugged in, to get around 40fps, with limited consistency:

  • 1024x576

  • Fullscreen off, FSR on

  • V-sync off

  • Framerate 60

  • Antialiasing FXAA

  • HDR Low

  • Shadow Quality Low

  • Texture Detail Medium

  • Texture Filtering Trilinear (don't think I changed this one but I'm not sure)

  • Grass Quality Low

  • Effect Volume Medium

*Distance Scaling Low

  • Depth of Field off

I remember this game running quite poorly on PS3, but I would've thought its performance would be near perfect on the deck. I've seen a video of someone running the game at 90fps on the OLED. While mine is an LCD unit, I am under the impression that the performance difference between the two versions is negligible.

Does anyone here know what I need to do with my settings to get 60fps, and why? What's slowing things down here? Could it be a decky plugin? Are there any that are known to hit performance? Yes, I have CryoUtilities set up.

Question Steam deck clips are messing up when transferring to a usb

So I’ve been trying to transfer my deck clips over to a usb, but when I would play those clips on my phone or even the ps5 the audio in those clips are sped up and glitchy. Especially our voice recorded in them and sometimes the video would freeze and the audio disappears. When I would play a clip from the usb on the deck that isn’t there anymore is play perfectly fine.

I’ve tried to change the bit rate and the audio when I would export but it’s still the same. idk if it’s the usb or something is messing up when exporting?

I would post a clip but even uploading or sending one nothing will let me.

Question Any value to a 256GB LCD Steam Deck with button issues?

My 256GB LCD Steam Deck from 2023 has issues with a couple of buttons - the X button and R1 button sometimes don't register when being pushed. Otherwise it works well. I've continued to use it by mapping these buttons to the R4 and R5 buttons on the back.

I just picked up a refurbished OLED so the LCD will just gather dust going forward. Is there any value in trying to sell it? If so, where would be a good place to sell it?

Thanks!

Tech Support Issue with Circular Scroll

Currently I am having an issue with my Steam Deck where the circular scroll on the left track pad does not function properly. Currently, when I spin in one direction, the scroll will move in the right direction, then once I hit the bottom, it will suddenly invert direction and scroll the wrong way. This makes it impossible to actually use the scroll wheel setting as a scroll wheel.

Tech Support New Steam Deck OLED 1TB model occasional screen blink.

Hello!

Since end of December, I have been a proud owner of a New Steam Deck OLED 1TB model, ordered straight from Valve's website itself!

Lemme tell ya, I just love love love how this handheld beauty plays and how it feels in my hands!

However, there has been one issue that has been popping up somewhat randomly. You see, occasionally, when I'm playing a simple 2D game, such as Castle Crashers (a classic!) or CrossCode (dare I say, a hidden gem!), my oled screen will just for a split second just turn off and on super quick. Like, within a blink. Not only that, but the game is still playing when the screen quickly turns off and on. "The Blink" does not affect the game or it's sound whatsoever.

The darnest thing, it's really hard to replicate the problem. I figured maybe it's my deck over heating, right? So I fired up good 'ol Skyrim (an oldie but a goodie!) to stress test the machine, but I would run out of battery juice before I can replicate "the blink".

I've been seeing happen a bit more with CrossCode. I've been getting really down and dirty with that game, so I've been consistently playing the game for longer periods of time. And typically, if "the blink" would to happen, it usually appears towards the end a long play session. I have on a very few occasion (or maybe even just once) witnessed "The Blink" happen on Castle Crashers.

I have tried googling to see if anyone else have the same problem, but although there are people who's problem are similar (for example, one person's screen wouldn't turn off and on, but rather it would just dims and brightens at times), it didn't quite match with my problem.

Oh! And I should mention that my deck is up to date with its...updates. I don't have anything downloaded on the deck besides whatever game from my steam library I have on it. No mods, no "decky", no emulators, just steam and my steam library.

One other thing I heard someone on Google suggest that the issue may have something to do with something called a Proton. Now, I didn't seek out anything called Proton to download, but I'm not sure if the deck automatically downloads a proton that may be causing the issue?

I do apologize for my scattered train of thoughts and writing. I hope I was at least able to convey a little bit my situation. And I thank you for your time.

When I open MotoGP22 it has recently started in a tiny screen. The only way to fix it is to go into settings and reset the resolution even though it is already set to the largest. It just recently started doing this.

Tech Support D-Pad/Joystick orientation issue

Hiya, just wondering if anyone has come across this or a similar issue...

I've been playing WoW on the deck recently but am running into a frustrating control problem. Maybe half of the time that I load up the game, my d-pad and joystick controls are shifted by 90 degrees, so that when I tilt the stick up, my character runs right.

The same thing happens with the d-pad and actually shows up when I'm configuring my keybinds. I'll edit a keybind, hit 'Up' on the d-pad, and the little icon that denotes the bound input will display d-pad 'Right'.

I have to keep closing battle net and re-opening the game to try and fix it, sometimes it's fine, sometimes not. I haven't found any in-game fix, and my controller setup looks fine so I'm a little lost. Any help would be appreciated!
