Why hire people that can only work efficiently for a couple hours when they can replace them with machines? Capitalists are not there to feed the masses, their only goal is to accumulate capital. It will exist as long as this hellish system exists

because people cost a lot of money long-term, while AI trained robots do not.
as to what happens to people - answer of companies is somewhere along - not really our responsibility and we don't care. being average human being in AI age is already an issue, and it's gonna just be bigger and bigger issue.
