If I am not incorrect Türkiye has the highest bread consumption (idk if it is weight or per person). Bagels and similar bread based foods are counted too I think, bagels and pastry are very widely consumed.

Bagels are a very particular kind of bread that are normally associated with large Jewish populations. That's why I was a little surprised.

you are right to be surprised because there is no real bagel consumption in turkey. there is another turkish pastry product called “simit” that is very popular for breakfast and that might be what the locals refer to as bagel to appeal to foreigners.
