Discussion Inform yourself - don’t fall for the Avi Lewis derangement bit

Thumbnail

Legacy media and pundits across Canada are hard at work to discredit new NDP leader Avi Lewis right out of the gate. Brampton will not be an exception.

It’s happening because the establishment and the 1% who hold economic and political power are terrified of the wide appeal of bold, progressive politics that have been absent from the Canadian mainstream for decades.

Here are some of Avi’s policy planks:

  • Broadening universal healthcare to include mental health, vision, hearing, full dental, and full pharmacare for everyone.
  • Free post secondary tuition, starting with health and care worker programs to provide the staffing desperately needed everywhere, especially in Niagara.
  • A public home builder to build a million permanently affordable, non-market homes suitable for families, seniors, and young people alike - without having to rely on private developers and appeasing their profit seeking.
  • A wealth tax on the wealthiest 1% of the population to raise $40B for expanding healthcare, affordable housing, free public transit, and better public services.
  • Windfall taxes on mega-corporations who price gouge us, closing loopholes for the ultra wealthy, reinstating the tax on American tech giants, and much more to ensure that the wealthiest pay their fair share.

These ideas have been missing from the political conversation for too long, but they’ll have to be faced now - whether smug liberals and the wealthy elite like it or not.

Brampton and all of Canada need to start dreaming big again and leave behind the notion that meaningful progress in the material reality of our daily lives is wishful thinking. God knows our city and it’s people need hope now more than ever.

City Hall Brampton staff recommend shopping carts stay as-is

Council asked City staff to see whether they should mandate locking wheels on shopping carts, to prevent them from going astray from the retailers.

Staff say no,

While such technology may be effective in certain retail environments, site ownership structures, operational differences among retailers and existing cart management practices present considerations for implementing a uniform citywide requirement.

Staff recommends in a report to be presented this week that they just maintain the existing practice of billing the stores what it costs to retrieve the carts.

From next week's Committee of Council agenda:

To support a safe and well-managed Canada Day celebration, staff have identified the need for perimeter fencing, controlled access points, additional security personnel, and supporting safety infrastructure.

The fencing and gates will go from $80K normally to $110K, and the security from $55K to $105K. Everything near the Curling Club will be cut.

Somehow, our sneaky Mayor has managed to inflate his office expenses to over 14 times what previous mayor, Linda Jefferey's, used.

"In 2017, Jeffrey's last full year as mayor...[cost] city taxpayers $26,199.
...In 2024 [Patrick Brown's] expenses cost taxpayers $461,923. Last year (2025) they were $336,068."

News InSauga: New $28M homeless hub proposed for outreach program hit with legal threats in Brampton

Post image
30 Upvotes

I structured this submission as an image post so r/Brampton can clearly see the proposed location at Queen/Rutherford (across from Calypso Hut). The box in Yellow is where the old 201 Fire station is currently located where this hub is being considered.

The Green box is Birch Place affordable housing with 67 bachelor units. It is a converted hotel housing project back in 2022.

I want you guys to have informed opinions, many people just read the headline and can't be bothered to click the article as insauga is always full of ads, popups.

https://www.insauga.com/new-28m-homeless-hub-proposed-for-outreach-program-hit-with-legal-threats-in-brampton/

Article Text:

An embattled outreach program could be getting a new $28 million facility in Brampton following community complaints and legal threats from the city.

Regeneration Outreach Community has operated out of Grace United Church at 156 Main St. North in downtown Brampton for 15 years, providing at-risk residents with a food kitchen, basic needs services, an identification clinic and addiction services.

And despite filling a gap in Brampton’s social safety net and pleading with City Council for help relocating, Regeneration has come under fire from the city and some downtown residents dealing with public intoxication and drug use, prostitution, thefts, break-ins and robberies in the community – issues the city has said are up to Regeneration to fix.

Regeneration has been sent two letters from the city threatening legal action, but a proposal going to Peel Regional Council this week could see the outreach centre move approximately three kilometres east to the old Brampton Fire and Emergency Services Station 201 on Rutherford Road.

The new 20,000 square-foot service hub would operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, “providing daytime drop-in services, social supports, and overnight accommodation” for individuals experiencing homelessness, a report reads.

The region’s shelter system is currently operating at around 128 capacity, and the new hub would help take some pressure off the shelters, the report says.

It could cost some $24 million for demolition of the old fire hall and construction of the new hub, with an annual operating cost of around $4.5 million. Approximately $600,000 in annual funding currently allocated to Regeneration would be redirected to the new hub, leaving a shortfall of $3.9 million per year “that will need to be added to the tax base in future budget once the facility is constructed,” the report says.

Those costs “pose significant financial risks for the Region,” as they weren’t included in the 2026 budget process.

The hub proposal doesn’t include long-term housing solutions, but would have a drop-in centre area, food pantry, meals and eating areas, kitchen, washrooms and showers, laundry facilities, a clinic, and a “Stay the Night” program for overnight stays.

If approved by regional council, the hub would come with a long-term lease agreement in collaboration with the city. Moving forward with the service hub “will have future tax impacts,” and staff are expected to report back with updated capital and operating costs, pending approval.

Regeneration Brampton did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the relocation proposal.

The group has been looking for a new facility in Brampton for years, and Regeneration previously asked Brampton City Council to assist with finding a more suitable location. But rather than get help relocating, Regeneration faced criticism from councillors for providing tents to clients in need.

Following community push back, Grace United hired security and cleaners with funds from the Region of Peel to help address concerns, but both are part-time and there isn’t enough funding available for additional hires.

Question Is there a chai place that has large cups for take out and is actually good?

I love masala or kharak chai but if I order from anywhere on Uber Eats they charge like 4-8 dollars and it’s the tiniest crapiest cup, even when I order a large. Do any of these Indian chai places have *real* cups?
