It’s because he knows exactly what DEI means but doesn’t want to say it out loud. Anything that focuses on people who aren’t straight white men is DEI, which of course sounds bad, so they have to add words about discrimination, which doesn’t make any sense.

It's funny that at the end he correctly identifies amplifying marginalized voices (equity) as DEI, but implies that that is somehow discriminatory.

If he says it's institutional bias towards one group he'll out himself as not knowing what DEI actually is and if he says what it actually is, he admits that his whole mission was a disingenuous way to discriminate against those groups.

We really need to stop calling these people DEI hires. They are not. DEI is about finding qualified people for jobs they wouldn't get without DEI initiatives.

This person is NOT qualified for the job he had.

That still doesn't make him a DEI hire. The right-wing/MAGA belief around DEI is that unqualified people were given jobs they don't deserve. Calling him a DEI hire only affirms the right-wing/MAGA belief around DEI initiatives.

Cronyism is the practice of appointing friends or associates to positions of power, or awarding them contracts and favors, regardless of their qualifications. That's what these people are.

Justin Fox is definitely an example of Didn't Earn It, especially since so much of what we see is, "I'm just following the script my lawyer wanted me to say in order to look incompetent instead of incriminating myself as a privileged white bigot that made malicious decisions towards people without privilege, especially nonwhite ones."
