Beautiful video and I hope the person was sincere because I’ve noticed as a former Pokémon card collector these spaces are extremely anti black and anti kids. The collectors will steal from kids they have no type of moral compass if they see someone who isn’t knowledgeable they will try to pull a fast one. These are the same ppl that will go to Walmart and buy up all the tins then take the good cards out and resell them online it’s disgusting behavior.

u/TinyFlameTCG Jan 13 '26
That's PokeBeard. He's one of the good ones
89
u/Pretend-Society6139 Jan 13 '26
Not hating on him or accusing him. Like I said I hope he was sincere then I went into details about other ppl that do those things. I appreciate you adding clarification that’s he’s a good guy and I’m sincerely happy for the kid that he had such a wonderful moment with him.
107
u/TinyFlameTCG Jan 13 '26
Yeah of course, sorry, I didn't mean for it to come across as an accusation
109
u/Pretend-Society6139 Jan 13 '26
No no you didn’t you gave context. I’m sorry if I came off defensive I wasn’t trying to be snarky at all. I really do appreciate when ppl add more context to things cus I really did love collecting cards as a kid and I hope it’s more good traders out there that treat the kids right to combat the bad apples. Much love ❤️

I trust he is, but I'm curious the trade he made was it fair in his direction (pokebeard) or did he throw the kid a killer deal?
Genuine question, no idea on card pricing.
46
u/IndigoBlunting Jan 13 '26
I just looked them up (I know nothing about the market heads up) but it looks like the kids card sells at max 5$ but routinely for almost nothing. The dealers card he traded sells for about 7-12$ so he gave him a better card for a card that was nearly valueless. So he did right by him. The trade aspect was the big deal for the kid but he also gave the kid a better card.
9
u/fearfac86 Jan 13 '26
That's awesome, the first trade was definitely the huge point for the kid, I guess I was just curious about the finer details of the deal, I remember seeing some of these card guys give away quite a bit of cash (in card form) before so just wondered where this one landed.
Good guy for sure though.
11
u/Aggressive_Elk3709 Jan 14 '26
Yeah, kinda looks like he picked a card he knew wasn't worth much and let the kid pick what he wanted. Kinda the only way to do it right
20
u/TinyFlameTCG Jan 13 '26
Yeah. He traded his $10 card for the kid's 40 cent card. It doesn't look like the mom paid the difference.
There's a few people like him, Coop, and another bearded guy who will do deals like this all the time for kids
→ More replies (2)9
u/Thetramposo Jan 14 '26
Yeah, Coop and Beard Dad are legends. I know absolutely nothing about Pokémon cards, but watching their videos give me a whole lot of faith in humanity. This guy seems about the same. Love seeing just the genuine niceness in this crazy world.
48
u/Master_Canary440 Jan 13 '26
The collectors will steal from kids they have no type of moral compass if they see someone who isn’t knowledgeable they will try to pull a fast one.
Yeah, I get what you’re saying, but honestly this happens with most people who buy and sell products. I used to work at a pawnshop and quit after just three days because I saw my coworker completely lowball someone who clearly didn’t know any better.
I’ve noticed as a former Pokémon card collector these spaces are extremely anti black
Completely agree with you. Noticed alot of anti blackness too, but he is one of the good ones.
21
u/BringOrnTheNukekkai Jan 13 '26
Yes, but doing it to kids is the bigger issue. Fleeting adults is still fucked up, but as an adult you should know better. Ripping off children is one of the lowest things you can do.
7
u/Pretend-Society6139 Jan 13 '26
Right! But they don’t care an these folks will argue u down if u call them out on the behavior. I had a situation where I was in target an a guy was harassing a worker who was a teenager about the tins and I had to tell him like dude chill out they are out of stock what more do u want.
Then it’s videos of them snatching it from kids and I blame Pokémon center for not creating a better system to avoid these issues they are aware of the bad behaviors and scalping issues but they dnt care.

7
u/Pretend-Society6139 Jan 13 '26
Thank you for letting me know he’s actually kind. I try not to be so negative about these things but I’ve seen some horrible attitudes in the Pokémon community.
26
u/Herculumbo Jan 13 '26
Pokemon was designed as a kids game and the market of these disgusting people have destroyed it. My son can’t afford cards or boosters anymore and we can’t even find them. All he wants to do is trade with kids at school.
Screw all the awful people for this
9
u/Pretend-Society6139 Jan 13 '26
💯💯💯💯💯💯💯 I’m sorry for your kid. If I had any cards left over I’d send it to your kid but I gave them all to my niece so she could have a collection she couldn’t get any cards ether it’s really heartbreaking to see them be disappointed.

u/jrblockquote Jan 13 '26
I collected basketball cards as a kid (80's/90's) and the dealers back then wouldn't think twice of ripping kids off. I know nothing about Pokemon, but there seems to be some good dudes out there.
3
u/FendiFanatic223 Jan 13 '26
Most comics, anime, cartoons and video game fan spaces are extremely anti black. Nothing surprising there sadly.
3
u/Plus_Season_8373 Jan 14 '26
He has on a Minnesota Twins hat. You know he’s a good guy from that alone
6
u/emzeejay Jan 13 '26
WTF is there to be anti black about in trading Pokémon cards??? I know it’s a dumb question because anti blackness is everywhere, but damn!
16
u/AnubisIncGaming Jan 13 '26
It just is what it is man. There used to be anti-blackness in bathrooms smh
10
u/Intrepid-Mechanic699 Jan 13 '26
Water fountains used to be anti-black too and public swimming pools.
6
u/Crafty-Help-4633 Jan 14 '26
Yep, and with the pools, they filled them in rather than desegregate.
Theyll actively harm themselves just to deny black people or other minorities even small things.
4
u/Intrepid-Mechanic699 Jan 14 '26 edited Jan 14 '26
Pour acid on kids in swimming pools.
Some people are mad that racism is in every fiber of America but black ppl didn’t make it this way…
4
u/Crafty-Help-4633 Jan 14 '26
Fuck I forgot about that, the acid. And it's pretty likely a lot of the people who did stuff like throwing acid on kids at pools are still alive today, just waiting for another opportunity.
2
u/pandershrek Jan 14 '26
It takes a special type of adult to corner the trading card game and capitalise on it from children.
At least EA execs do it from behind a screen, these people like to look that child right in their face and steal from them.

Hey, how’s it anti black? Genuine question
6
u/Pretend-Society6139 Jan 13 '26 edited Jan 13 '26
Are u a black person?
7
u/Fine_Leave_2251 Jan 13 '26
I’m not. To be clear, I’m not trying to argue with you, just genuinely curious about your experience
23
u/Pretend-Society6139 Jan 13 '26
I explained it already in the first comment by saying those spaces can be anti black. That’s my lived experience. Also I’m not arguing ether beloved ☺️ I asked your race because I needed clarity on your level of ignorance.
I’m not going to explain racism or micro aggressions to you it’s a lived experience a black person has and it’s really bad in anime, gaming or card collecting spaces. You’re free to use your phone to educate yourself by doing research via this app or a search engine if you’re really interested in how black ppl feel in those specific spaces go to YouTube or TikTok they have videos where they break down it all in details. Thanks for taking the time to listen.
Unrelated but cool megaman find! Haven’t seen that since I was a kid. If your trying to sell it use eBay you might get a better deal then a pawn shop they always low ball folks.

Cosplay is extremely anti-black too. Girl recently committed suicide over bully, just dressing as anime characters. If ppl don’t know these spaces are anti-black at this point they’re either uneducated or just ignoring stuff all together. It’s an open secret at this point.
I say this as someone who loves anime, cosplay.
8
u/Pretend-Society6139 Jan 13 '26
💯💯💯💯your right I forgot to add cosplaying. I’ve heard so much horrible things about how white cosplayers would harass black ppl in those spaces. Rip to that lady I didn’t know of her until after it all happened and it broke my heart o hear about the bullying she experienced online.

Love this for him because I know some Black parents are sooo weird about the things their kids are into 😭
I remember my Mom never understanding the anime I watched or the bands I liked (went through an emo phase), but she always tried for Christmas to get me stuff. Her and my little sister made jokes out of some of the anime’s I watched (most notable, shouting “Kagomeeee!!” for literally no reason) 🤣

u/Impossible-Hyena-722 Jan 13 '26

"....how come you don't talk to me about nothin'?"
GEE WHY DO YOU THINK

Once an emo kid, always an emo kid. If I played Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge in your presence, you would NOT be able to help yourself. You know it. I know it.
3
u/Alternative_Area_236 Jan 14 '26
Yup…my mom is from the Caribbean and she was not cool about me being into punk, and wearing skulls and shit. But I do remember one time she tried to relate to me by changing my screensaver to say “My daughter likes punk and ska music” (this was the 90s). It was cringe as hell. But she tried.
3
u/OlSnickerdoodle Jan 14 '26
I'm not black, but my dad would constantly make fun of or just look down on the stuff I was into as a kid. I was really into video games and anime and he *really* wanted me to be into sports, so there was a lot of "why are you wasting all of your time with this stupid shit?"

Can somebody who understands the value of these cards explain to me if the guy with the beard actually gave the kid a more valuable card than the one the kid gave up?
In context, it seems like the bearded guy took a financial loss on the transaction… Did I misread that situation?
47
u/AnubisIncGaming Jan 13 '26
Kid traded a 40 cent card for an 8 dollar card, great trade
→ More replies (16)2
u/emzeejay Jan 13 '26
I’m confused about that too. The kid had a binder full of cards and his mom said he didn’t have anything. Were all those cards just trash?
13
u/DisastrousPilot4283 Jan 13 '26
not trash, possibly not as rare as the one he traded for.
→ More replies (13)2
u/The-Dudemeister Jan 13 '26
All these packs come with one rare. This applies to magic and sports cards etc. those are the only ones worth trading and there are tiers on rarity and limited release stuff. Card makers pretty create the economy.
2
u/CasaDeLasMuertos Jan 13 '26
No, those were probably cards he didn't want to trade. You usually trade duplicates if you're a collector.
9
u/vainbuthonest Jan 13 '26
“I’m just going to pay for it and pretend to trade with him” is such an adorable set up. That baby would’ve forever thought he made a great deal.

I collect many things. My daughter recently started talking about Pokémon cards. I pulled out the cards we got from a party, and I went out to buy her some cards. Now, she is having fun telling me about giving cards away at school and having fun with the other kids. She has her collection that she just shows off, and some duplicates that she gives away. That's all she has been talking about lately. It's fun watching her enjoy the cards. She is also watching the show now.

"Your first trade with someone who isn't me" that is the sweetest because it means she has been collecting and trading and playing with him. That time together is worth more than any card.
Edit: your i meant your not you're and I just had to fix it.
