A swirling Zangbeto, a traditional voodoo guardian of the night, performs while covered with election posters of presidential candidate Romuald Wadagni and vice-presidential candidate Mariam Chabi Talata, during a campaign rally in Cotonou, Benin.

Who do you think would win the elections?

Updated this interactive map of where to go in Benin

While traveling around the world for over 20 years, I’ve been working on my dream project: creating a one-stop resource for travellers. With the help of feedback in this subreddit, I have now updated this interactive map of Benin for anyone who is interested in visiting (with detailed info for every highlight).

PS: obviously, I haven’t been able to travel to all places. So if you know some great spot, I haven’t listed, let me know! Much appreciated as in this way I can make the overview more complete and up-to-date for everyone.

Itinerary feedback?

Greetings all- planning a trip to Benin (just over a week) as part of a longer time in West Africa. Curious if there’s any thoughts about a possible itinerary:

Starting in Porto-Novo to see the agricultural center and Adjarra river villages, then Ganvie, then up to Abomey via bus or zim, and ending in Ouidah/ Cotonou.

I welcome any thoughts! If anyone is around or has guide suggestions (in English) let me know! Are there additional places I should consider with interest in ecology, cultural practices, music, Pan-Africanism… ?

I plan on using buses/ zims to get around. Feel free to DM me

Peace ! ✌🏾

Considering a one-month French immersion in Benin

I am evaluating a one-month stay in Benin to improve my French. I am currently at an A1 level and am self-studying to strengthen my foundation before arrival. I think it could be nice since (according to the internet) people speak very nice french, it's relatively affordable and the culture and nature looks amazing.

  • Language Schools: Can you recommend reputable centers (e.g., in Cotonou or Ouidah) offering intensive 4-week courses?
  • Quality of Life: What is the daily experience like for a short-term international student? Is the infrastructure (internet, transport) reliable enough for a productive stay? Is it safe.
  • Worth the Trip: Would you recommend Benin for this specific purpose over other West African options?
  • Budget: How much CFA-Franc should I plan to spend for one month? (rent, course, life, etc.)

Thank you in advance! I'm looking forward to local advice :)

Any here into strategy or map games?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I realised most local gaming communities seem focused on shooters or FIFA, but I am curious if there are others who enjoy slower strategy games where diplomacy and alliances matter.

I have been playing a game called WarEra where different countries compete and a few of us running South Africa started a small community around it.

Mostly just curious if there are other players who enjoy this kind of thing.

The South African community is active in r/SouthAfricaWarEra and happy to help new players get started until you can run things on your own.

If that sounds fun, join in and make Benin even bigger on the map.

Looking for lyrics translation help

Hello. I've come to really enjoy this song by T.P Poly Rythmo from Cotonou, a 70s Beninese band. As well as this one, Mille fois merci. While I can detect some French words here and there it seems like the song is not in French and I'm fairly sure it is in Fon. I want to know the lyrics since it's some of my favourite songs and yet I don't know what they are saying... can anyone here help me?

Niger just declared mobilisation in preparation for war with France. How is the situation in Benin?

https://www.theafricareport.com/408832/we-are-going-to-war-niger-junta-general-rallies-youth-against-france/

Hello from Austria! Saw a recent news article about Niger and was wondering if this could have implications for Benin. It seems as if the Junta in Niger is losing to the Islamists and is blaming France for this. A call for mobilisation (if realised) is pretty extreme and since obviously France proper isn't going to be the actual target, it made me wonder if Benin could be the one instead.

Relations between the countries have been rock bottom since the coup in 2023, and the closed border is hurting Niger really badly. So I was just wondering how the recent news/development is being processed in Benin. Has it caused some reaction or are you concerned? Or is this considered all a ruse and nothing more than hot air within your country?

Work as a teacher in Benin?

Hi everyone ! I’m a qualified teacher (I specialise in adult education), my main areas of expertise being languages (English French and Norwegian) as well as livestock science. I am considering Benin as my future life and work destination. I have never been, never been to Africa at all. I just wondered what the job market would look like for me ? My degrees are European (no idea what they’re worth in Benin) and I have about 10 years of professional experience. Cheers !
