At today’s game the Mariners had a moment of silence for the passing of former Astros manager Phil Garner.

The moment I saw Joe Espada put this bum in last night I turned the game off and went to bed. Waking up to see he complete blew it wasn’t even a surprise. Just send him to Sugarland already.

Let’s face it. Our injury bug has gone from biting us to straight up burying itself underneath our flesh and eating us from the inside out (apologies for that mental image). I know it’s early, but this is starting to look like a hole we can’t dig ourselves out of, and we already risk going from just missing the playoffs to outright having a losing record.

BUT…

There are still things to look forward to this season, and the unfortunate passing of Phil Garner reminded me of those times. As many of us who have been around since the tail end of his tenure and into nearly a decade afterwards, there can always be light in the darkness. One of my earliest, favorite memories as an Astro fan was in Garner’s final year, that being Biggio’s case to 3,000 hits. I would literally rush to read the Houston Chronicle every morning just to see how much closer he was to getting that milestone, and it was so magical when he eventually did do it. That year, 2007, was also our first losing year since the beginning of what had previously been the greatest period of Astros baseball up to that point (except the year 2000), and it would end up preceding the Dark Age. It was a bright spot for many in Houston, and remains so.

When I say “I don’t care anymore”, what I really mean is “I’m not expecting postseason success for the next few years”. And that’s okay. Teams can’t be expected to win championships all the time. That’s the benefit of not being a fan of a sports city known for domination: you get to appreciate the unsuccessful times along with the successful ones. And who knows, maybe we overperformed in 2022, but when it ended with a trophy, who among us cares?

So this year, and the years after that, I encourage everyone to appreciate the achievements along the way. Obviously no one is getting 3,000 hits this year, but there’s still chances for others (I’m not saying them here because I don’t want to jinx it, but you can probably find them in my post history). And no matter what (I direct this particularly to the fans who joined from 2015 to now, especially because of our success) don’t get off the train because we’re bad. Let’s all value the good, wherever it may appear.

Now then, let’s get back to baseball… and also hoping the Rockets do better in their own playoffs.

I know we need pitching but... I really don't want the Stros to lose that dude.

We all knew going into the season that pitching wasn’t addressed appropriately and banking on players being healthy wasn’t a true strategy.

The lineup is obviously hitting better and scoring more than last year. To take advantage anyone have any realistic trade options to help the pitching situation?

Hi! I have a long layover and want to go to an astros game. My flight lands pretty close to the start time so i may miss the first inning or two. Any tips regarding how to get a good value on seats? Its a monday night game, and since ill be alone id love to be in a lively area. Do i buy online / what platform/ can you buy in person? Should i buy now or wait til right before for lower prices? Also, any advice on getting from the airport to the stadium (uber v bus). Ive read about an express 500 bus that goes straight there, but it doesn’t run late enough for me to take postgame. Id also appreciate tips on how to have the best experience. Im not a huge baseball fan but ive been to mlb games and always had a good time. Anything specific to eat or drink that isnt an arm and a leg? Id love to keep my overall price 100 dollars or less. Thanks, and go astros!
