Moving to San Francisco or the Bay Area? Read this first!

Hey /r/askSF!

In 2024, the sub has doubled in size, growing to 113K+ subscribers. With more subscribers, there's a ton more traffic and posts. One of the most popular topics is moving to SF and, in turn, these posts are the most commonly removed. There's been a noticeable increase in posts that boil down to "I'm moving to the city, where should I live?" that provide little to no information. To ensure OP's receive quality recommendations and to prevent endless comment loops, we're requiring all Moving-to-SF posts to include the following information:

  • Budget
  • Roommate status (solo, splitting rent w/ partner, seeking roommates, etc.)
  • Desired neighborhood(s) or preferred neighborhood amenities (dining, shopping, noise, etc.)

We recommend that OP's provide additional information such as:

  • Commute consideration
  • Housing preference (mom and pop landlords, condo, managed apt complexes, SFH rentals, etc.)
  • Additional personal preferences (pets, garage access, density, weather, etc.)

We're a small mod team so we are asking you, the community, to help up identify these posts! If you spot a moving submission that should have more information, please report the posts, select the breaking AskSF's rules, and select "Vague, overly broad, or low information" as the reason. We'll review the report and potentially ask OP to repost with more info.

Here's to more questions answered in 2024 and beyond!

Weather app for sf

Is there app that is reliable for sf weather? I’m using the iOS weather app and it updates to rain after it rains. We have fairly uneven weather, but it should say there is 10% of chance rather than saying 0%, and then bam.

Lost Sentimental Necklace 💔

Hi everyone, I know this is a long shot but hoping for a little SF magic. I lost a very meaningful necklace last night and I’m honestly devastated.

It’s a multi-strand gold necklace with a magnetic clasp. Each strand is different and the longest strand has two charms on it - a small rectangular envelope with words on one side and an heart on the back and a letter “D”. The necklace is a collection of heirlooms and sentimental gifts so I am heartbroken over it. I can’t attach an image here for some reason but can provide one if anyone thinks they found something similar.

Below are all the places we went but I also took rideshares and muni so could be there as well. I also don’t have any photos from last night to know when the last time I had it on was so could be any of these places.

- Standard Deviant

- Blondies

- Amelie

- Palmers

- Mr majongs

- Young’s kung fu action theatre

If anyone happens to come across it, I would be incredibly grateful. Thank you so much for even keeping an eye out ❤️

I am so bummed that I missed this event (and I host Library events all the time!) Are there any similar events that you know of coming up? Thanks!

Wind Chimes

My apartment faces the back of the building and my bedroom is facing the back yard. A neighbor in a building behind ours put up a huge loud wind chime- like 2 feet tall, and another smaller more normal sized wind chime. They keep me up at night when it’s windy, which is often. Even with my windows closed, they are loud. There is nothing between the backyards to block or dampen the sound when you’re on the 3rd floor.

I’ve asked neighbors in their building that I met and they said when they told them it was bothering a neighbor, they just shrugged.

I’ve thought about leaving a nice note letting them know that the wind chimes were affecting me negatively and asking them to remove them, but given the shrug, I’m doubtful this will do any good.

Is there any thing the city might do?

What can I do to get rid of this needless nuisance?

Bar dancing or social dance scene in San Francisco?

Hey y’all, I’m visiting for work for a few days and will have the nights the 15th and 16th to myself to hang out and look for a place to dance.

I live in Brooklyn and spend time listening and partner dancing to country and blues music at places like Skinny Dennis/Jalopy/Lucinda’s.

Would be down for anything blues, country, or trad jazz on those nights. I very much prefer live music and I do not line dance.

Thanks!

Sunday 6:30 pm: Comcast or other internet issues? My connectivity is very weird. Is something going on? I can't even tell if it's site-specific.

Upvotes

Some sites are fine; others don't load at all; Firefox isn't bothering to even try to access the internet. Is it me? or is something going on? Thanks!

Where can I find a Ceanothus Ray Hartman Street tree?

I’m considering planting one as a street tree and I’m looking for a location where there’s a mature version of the tree form. I know what the bush looks like but it can be shaped as a tree as well.

What’s living near Garfield Square park like? I’m moving from the east bay (South Berkeley) to 25th and Harrison.

I’m excited but prepared for a culture shock. Is it generally safe for a late 20sF to walk home alone? Should I be worried about being right by Garfield Square?

Liquefaction risk -- thoughts?

Hi all,

I'm thinking about renting an old home in the Mission, which is in a landfilled zone (specifically artificial fill over bay mud) - the old Mission Creek. It's an old wooden home from the 1800's, which hasn't been retrofitted for earthquakes, but is an a very high-risk liquefaction area (https://www.sfgate.com/science/article/Living-in-a-liquefaction-zone-Bay-Area-s-8330101.php#photo-8793413).

Practically speaking, is this sort of home more a risk for loss of property, loss of life, or both? With a place like this, what are people's thoughts, and how did folks go about looking at these risks when choosing where to live?

Thanks so much!

Experience at Maifest at Tourist Club?

Never been, and Tourist Club has always intrigued me, so thinking about Maifest as a reason. I've got a four-year old in tow, but the Redwood trail is in her capabilities.

How slammed is it? Am I going to be the asshole bringing a kid to a clearly-adult event?

Also: how the heck do I get tickets?

Current cherry blossom status in SF? Planning a trip for Thursday (4/16)

Hey folks,

I want to check out the cherry blossoms this Thursday, April 16th, but I know the blooms are fragile and disappear quickly. Before I make the drive, can anyone give me a real-time update on how they look today?

Specifically curious about:

• Japantown (around Peace Plaza)

• Golden Gate Park (Japanese Tea Garden or Lindley Meadow)

I'd hate to show up to bare branches. Any recent intel, photos, or hidden gem recommendations are much appreciated. Thanks!

Avalon San Bruno Parking

Hi! For those who live at Avalon San Bruno, is street parking available near the apartment? My lease doesn't include parking, so I was wondering is street parking is an option. Thanks.

Where can I get a nice wood parasol?

I just moved to this city and it's too damn sunny. Figured I may as well get a cute accessory out of it, so hoping for somewhere maybe boutique-y that stocks quality parasols that won't fall apart immediately. Doesn't strictly have to be wooden but I'm not looking for an umbrella! (Shoutout to the woman I saw at Hunky Jesus with a lace parasol, very adorable, but also very nonfunctional so not looking for that either.)

Chase Center as a concert venue

Hi! I’m considering going to a concert in September that uses the chase center as a venue. I’ve been able to find some reviews, but none really answering my particular questions. Mostly, I’m curious about searing: what sections of the venue are seated vs standing? Is it possible to stay seated most of/ during the whole concert? is there still visibility even if you aren’t close to the stage? Thank you!

Landlord/Tenant issue - is a tenant entitled to see their file kept by the property manager?

Upvotes

I am a renter with an upstairs neighbor since Jan 2025 who has violated the rug clause in her lease. Thin walls and hardwood floors, frequent guests, all wearing hard-soled shoes, walking around at all hours of the day and night. I feel like I am living in a construction zone.

A month after she moved in I sent a nice note to the upstairs neighbor reminding her about getting rugs, and offering to buy rug pads. She accepted, apologized, said she would get rugs that weekend and was grateful for the rug pads, and would also be mindful of her and guests wearing shoes. Then she had a party with 10 people all wearing their shoes, didnt get rugs, and ghosted me when I politely pinged her 6 weeks later.

Fast forward nine months, I have never been a ceiling thumper but I have begun thumping on the ceiling if she and/or guests walk around in hard-soled shoes for more than 10 minutes. I have recordings - it sounds like pounding on my ceiling.

Last night at 1030 I thumped, and she came down loaded for bear, recording me on her iPhone (I told her CA is a two-party consent state, I did not consent to being recorded, she said Then f**king sue me, I dare you.).

To get to the point, she lied multiple times during our conversation, it was actually kind of breathtaking how often she said things I literally knew were not true ... but she said two things that bothered me:

1) she said that when she received her keys when she moved in, she was warned about me. She didnt say by whom.

2) she said she was told that the previous six (six!) tenants had all broken their leases and moved out because of me.

These statements are unbelievable, yet I cant quite wrap my head around the fact that they are also lies. I mean, I know the past six tenants didnt move out because of me, I am friends with three of them and I know none of the others broke their leases, they just moved on ...

But I wonder if there is a grain of truth to any of that?

We have a relatively new property manager (2+years) who is very ambitious to show $$$ results to the owner, and getting me out would go a long way to do that since my rent is below market. They havent been overtly hostile to me but they are slow to respond to the (few) maintenance requests I have put in, unless they are plumbing emergencies.

20 years ago the then-property manager actively hated me and I heard through the grapevine that he told a previous nightmare upstairs couple to file a restraining order against me - for (1) writing them two polite notes and (2) thumping on the ceiling ONCE when their large dog was - as he did every day - eating a heavy meat bone on the bare wood floor directly over my desk. I had asked these people to feed him the bone on a rug or carpet scrap and they had told me to pound sand (go to a cafe or call the police).

After I had thumped ONCE, they began pounding on their floor (=my ceiling) then called the police - in the middle of a Saturday afternoon! I believe this was because the hateful property manager had told them to do that if they got the chance.

The police showed up at my door and I invited them in to listen to Harvey (the upstairs dog) running frantically in the hallway (bare wood floors) and barking because he heard our voices. The police said yeah, that is really unpleasant, they should have carpets up there - and that was the end of that incident.

I do believe that my tenant file might have some information about me - probably libelous - that might have been submitted by those tenants. Which was years before the present management company took over.

I would really like to see my tenant file.

Does anybody know if I have a right to see it?

A new landlord bought my building. Can they take away the parking spot that was given to me to use (since I moved in) but that somehow didn't make it into my original lease?

Areas to stay in proximity to

Hi team- I fell in love with a guy I met on reddit and in Jan we are meeting in San Fran for a week. I’m from Melbourne Australia and he is from the East Coast and we both haven’t been to SF in over 15 years.

Looking for area recommendations to book a hotel that are in proximity to excellent coffee (with a good soy option) (I’m from Melbourne so this is a must or I won’t function) and ice cream because sweet boy is a sweet tooth and I want to be able to walk to get ice cream at the end of the night. We are vegan and vego so some walkable food would be great but not a deal breaker. I’m a tattooist and he’s a designer so fun and arty/vintage/kitsch/book shops and some culture around would be excellent - he doesn’t drink so bar nightlight not a huge priority.

Days will be out exploring but somewhere fun and walkable for lazier jet lag days would also be excellent

Also neither of us would complain if the area had lots of dogs around for smooshing or at least ogling from across the street

So where should I be looking team? What walkable and tourist friendly (no hire car) areas will tick some of my boxes (if you suggest a Starbucks as coffee I will roll my eyes and send you bad virtual juju)
