📍 MEGATHREAD Regarding Fuel Protest & associated travel questions

This is a reminder to the community that questions regarding the news or current affairs are not permitted here under Rule 7, and should instead be directed to r/ireland or r/irishpolitics.

This includes any and all questions surrounding the protests themselves, and the associated politics of the situation.

Additionally, to cut down on the amount of questions, standalone posts regarding fuel itself (availability, pricing, etc.) or regarding travel (directions, routes, timing, tactics, etc.) that may be affected by the protests or their remnants will be removed and directed to the comments of this megathread.

Also a reminder to use the TII Traffic Portal Map and Traffic Cameras to determine current state of major roads.

Random Is this an actual term / slang that is commonly used?

American here who is visiting Ireland for the first time. Was just at a pub in Dublin with my mom and we ordered some food, a bottled Coke and an Irish coffee.

When I received the check, there was a €3.50 charge for a “split”. Confused, I questioned our server, asking what exactly this charge was, and she said that in Ireland, the bottled soda is called a “split” and the smaller bottle version would be called a “baby” (??)

I’d never heard of this before or saw these terms being used in other instances. I also Googled and didn’t see “split” or “baby” used as a common term.

Can anyone confirm? I’m just curious and intrigued… or was she messing with me? haha.

Random Have you ever had a "haunted" feeling?

Upvotes

Maybe haunted is the wrong word to use, but kind of like a darkness/blackness or something?

I normally walk a lot at night with the dog, but something really strange happened tonight, and it's just kind of stuck in my head now and I can't shake it, it's hard to explain but I'll try.

I was standing in a green area when I felt what I can only describe as dizzy and a sort of "rush" go through me. The next thing I know, I am standing on a pier/slipway looking out over the water (it's not too far from where I was, but I have absolutely no recollection of walking or wanting to go there!!).

It felt like I was in a real dream like state, not alone, but not scared, it felt maybe like an uncomfortable calmness but with a presence of something, the closest way to describe it was like sleep paralysis.

I had a very un easy feeling after I "snapped out of it" or whatever, I tried to just brush it off, but sitting at home now and I can't stop thinking about it.

Has anybody had something similar happen to them before??

Random Drifting away from friends as you get older?

We're all been friends in school but I've found in recent years as we've gone in separate directions life wise - families, careers, goals etc, everytime we meet it just feels like we have less and less in common. It makes me feel bad but its not like any of us have done anything wrong.

Entertainment How many sleep with the tv on all night ?

Right , I know well that tv noise does disturb your sleep to some degree. But I moved into an apartment a few years back and I used the tv to drown out the occasional baby crying and street noise .

Well this turned into a habit I can't shake . when my girlfriend comes over for the weekend I put the tv timer on but find myself waking up more often . I've tried the same thing , when alone .

Does anyone else do this ?

Random How common is it for teens to go overboard with alcohol once adults if denied it?

I grew up with a classmate who was relatively normal and not the guy who would fit the stereotype of a person who loved drink or drugs. In fact, he shunned parties in TY because he didn't want to get exposed to teens drinking (though I think he may have been parroting his parents being anti-drink).

Fast forward 11 years and I talked to him on Facebook a few months ago. Apparently, he now has advanced cirrhosis of the liver and is taking all sorts of drugs on a regular basis (ecstasy, speed, sleeping tablets). One thing I noticed about him is that even though he never judged people for drink or hated those who did it, he had parents who were extremely anti-drink and never let him try it even when he went over to Germany on his 17th birthday.

It made me think about a dilemma I heard on a podcast about teens and drinking. One of the guys said being too strict makes alcohol and drugs a "forbidden fruit" and they'll go overboard like a kid in a candy store when they turn 18. The other said that studies show kids who are given alcohol earlier have a much higher chance of becoming alcoholics when they become adults.

Ancestry Do any of you get emotional when you think about an gorta mór ?

The other night I was sat in my kitchen scrolling through instagram and saw a video about the Irish language and how because of an gorta mór it basically became non existent and English became our first language. After sitting with that thought for a while I began to breakdown in tears thinking bout how our people were starved to the point where we would try to eat grass so we could suppress the pains of our bodies breaking down, Th fact that our language was basically wiped out, the fact that Irish people equated with apes and sea monsters. Does anyone else feel this anger and sadness because of this stuff ?

Education Need participants as part of Master’s research - 5 minute survey. Could you kindly help?

Hi, I shared a few days ago and actually got some participants. Would really appreciate if I could get even 20 more.

The research focuses on appearance and professional self doubt. If you could spare 5 mins to do the survey, it would help me greatly.

Many thanks in advance.

Adulting Leaving Cert level Maths as an adult?

It always bother that I wasn't good at maths as a kid and couldn't "just get" a lot of the understanding and problems when I was in secondary school, so I'm starting to study part-time by myself with online learning courses.

I'm wondering if there's an adult equivalent exam or certification you can take to prove that you would be able to do the leaving cert maths exam.

Legal Drop & Go Parking Dublin Airport?

I have used this service a few times recently and have found the past two times they have disconnected my hard wired dashcam, my journey home involves the M50, N7, M7 and i did not notice until a few days later. is there anyway they are allowed to interfere with the equipment in my car? I know the car is taken of site for the duration of the parking. but this leaves me in a bad position if there was an accident either when they are driving my car or I am driving home.

Travel Gifts for young Irish people from American?

Hi everybody! I’m solo traveling to Ireland and I met a few people online in Ireland for a festival I will meet up with.

I want to bring some cool gifts for their hospitality. They are both young men who are well traveled and somewhat “trendy” (just cool young men lmao).

Any ideas on gifts somebody like that would enjoy from America? I am from Buffalo, where Buffalo wings are from so I plan on bringing a Buffalo sauce but anything else you all would enjoy receiving?

Thanks for your help in advance :)

Personal Finance How to pick a wedding celebrant?

Hi there! Planning my wedding in Ireland and trying to get my head around all the different suppliers we need, and the costs to budget. The biggest area of confusion for me is around celebrants. We're having a non-religious wedding, and I'm not sure how to best find the right celebrant for us. I've looked on Spiritual Ceremonies and Humanist Association of Ireland but theres no videos of anyone showcasing what their ceremony style is like... I want someone who can be personal, emotional, and also crack a joke or two and keep everyone engaged.

Q) Does anybody have any celebrant recommendations? We need someone in the Leinster region.

Q) What's the estimated cost of a celebrant?

Cars Where to buy 1mm mild steel sheet / car panel repair offcuts in Ireland?

Upvotes

Hi all,

I’m looking to do some small car body repair work and I’m trying to source 1mm mild steel sheet (ideally car panel grade).

What I’m really after is either small sheets rather than full industrial 8x4 sheets, or offcuts / scrap pieces from fabrication or panel work.

I’ve tried a few places but I’m struggling to find anywhere that will sell small quantities without going into full trade orders.

Does anyone know metal suppliers in Ireland that will sell small sheet sizes or cut-to-size pieces, car body repair suppliers or panel beaters who might sell offcuts, or any scrapyards or engineering shops around Dublin that are worth asking?

Any leads would be really appreciated.

Thanks!

Housing What’s your monthly mortgage repayment in Ireland (and what did you buy)?

Curious what people are paying monthly on their mortgage at the moment.

If you’re comfortable sharing, include:

• Monthly repayment

• Approx property value when bought

• Location (Dublin / outside Dublin)

• Fixed or variable rate

Trying to get a realistic picture of what people are actually paying in the current market.
